Cómo redecorar su casa para el verano

Con el verano aquí, el redecorar la casa está en la lista de cosas que hacer de muchos residentes en el noreste de Georgia. ¿Cómo pueden llevar a cabo una pequeña transformación de la casa para reflejar el sentir del verano? Thea Elleberg, una diseñadora de interiores en Athens y quien ha trabajado en Italia y Nueva York es en la actualidad profesora de diseño interior en la Universidad de Georgia. También es dueña de su propia empresa, Design Inspirations. La diseñadora de interiores compartió algunos consejos sobre cómo mejorar un hogar sin gastar mucho dinero.

Para empezar, ¡inspírese! La tarea sería arreglar la cocina, el baño, el cuarto o la sala de estar, empiece con una actitud positiva. Echele un vistazo a las cosas que no puede cambiar en cualquier habitación y tómelas como un punto de partida para crear nuevas ideas que quisiera intentar. No tenga miedo de estos desafíos y utilícelos sólo como punto de partida.

Después de haber decidido un plan de trabajo, Ellenberg aconseja ir poco a poco. Una buena manera a empezar a trabajar en su hogar es reduciendo el desorden. Para esto, se recomienda añadir flores a una habitación para hacerla aparecer más viva. Las flores artificiales cuando están hechas con elegancia son tan bonitas las flores naturales y las plantas pequeñas también tendrán un efecto similar.

Para aquellas personas que deseen ir aun más lejos, Ellenberg recomienda agregar "vida" a sus alrededores. La diseñadora le gusta la idea de tener un pez en cualquier sala para hacerla más viva. Todo lo que se necesita es un jarrón (ella sugiere ir al Hobby Lobby o Wal-Mart), un pez, unas piedras decorativas para poner en el fondo del jarrón, y una Azucena de Paz para flotar sobre el agua. "Es una manera genial de tener un ser vivo en su hogar y de la misma manera tener un bello accesorio para decorar", explica Ellenberg.

Por su parte, los principiantes pueden agregar colores más vivos a la casa pintando las paredes. Karla Hernandez, estudiante de UGA, está decorando su cuarto actualmente y se le ocurrió la idea de pintar las paredes con colores claros. "Para las paredes, estoy pensando en pintar con una esponja y utilizar colores de verano como amarillo, verde y azul claro sobre una pared blanca, de esta forma parecerá como si hubieran nubes de colores".

Buscar accesorios nuevos para cada cuarto es otra manera de añadir color a un hogar y crear temas atractivos en cada habitación. Cojines coloridos con diseños florales, pantallas para las lámparas y cuadros son maneras fáciles de cambiar la apariencia de un cuarto. Estos consejos son conocidos por Natalia Suarez, también estudiante de UGA. Ella se inspiró en su familia para crear una nueva moda para el verano, "Me he fijado que mi madre y mi abuela suelen usar colchas que tiene diseños veraniegos y también abren las ventanas más a menudo".

Para la cocina, invierta en paños nuevos y salvamanteles para atraer el verano. Poner tarros de vidrio llenos de conchas o collares azules en el baño creará una atmósfera oceánica. En la sala de estar, adórnela inspirándose en el arte de Feng Shui, el cual busca equilibrio y armonía, y cambie de lugar los muebles para hacer que la sala parezca más abierta y espaciosa. Después, deshágase de la leña y las cenizas en la chimenea y reemplácelas con flores y velas aromáticas grandes. Para terminar, convierta la recámara en un escape tropical cubriendo la cama con un tapiz muy fino.

Y para esos rincones oscuros que son expuestos a poca o nada luz en absoluto, Ellenberg recomienda una solución sencilla, "Cuelgue espejos para reflejar bonitas imágenes, paisajes y luz a los rincones del recibidor o corte un espejo para encajarlo en un marco viejo de una ventana y póngalo en un cuarto con pocas o ninguna ventana".

La diseñadora también subrayó una regla muy importante para decorar su hogar para cualquier estación del año, ¡no hay reglas! "Lo más importante es recordar que es usted el que vive en su hogar y debe estar lleno de las cosas que a usted le gustan. Es mejor tener pocas cosas que le gusten que tener muchas cosas por las cuales siente indiferencia".

How to Redecorate for the Summer on a Budget

With summertime here, redecorating a living space may be on the seasonal to-do list for some Northeast Georgia residents. How can they give their homes a mini makeover to reflect a new summer mood? Athens-based interior designer Thea Ellenberg worked in Italy and New York before settling down in Athens to teach at the University of Georgia. Now she owns her own business, Design Inspirations. The interior designer gave a few tips on how to brighten a home without blowing through a budget.

To begin, get inspired! Whether the task is tidying up a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or common area, start with a positive attitude. Look at the things that cannot change about the room as a starting point for new ideas you would like to try. Don't be afraid of the challenges that each area in your home may present, but rather use these elements as a springboard.

After preparing for the task, Ellenberg advised taking small steps. A good way to start with what is already at home is to reduce clutter. Then, she recommended adding flowers to a room to make it seem brighter. Artificial arrangements done tastefully will look as gorgeous as real flowers, and small houseplants will have a similar effect.

For those who want to go a step further, Ellenberg suggested adding life to their surroundings - quite literally. The designer loves the idea of adding a fish to brighten up any room. All it takes is a vase (she suggests going to Hobby Lobby or Wal-Mart), the fish, decorative stones to place at the bottom of the vase, and a Peace Lily to float on top of the water. Ellenberg described, "It's a wonderful way to have a living creature in your home as well as a beautiful accessory."

Next, beginner decorators can bring brighter colors into the home by painting the walls. UGA student Karla Hernandez, who is currently redecorating her bedroom, also had the inspiration to paint her bedroom walls with light colors. She shared, "For the walls, I'm thinking about sponging summer colors, like yellows, greens, and light blues, onto a white wall. It'll look like colored clouds inverted from what I see outside."

Finding new accessories for each room is another way to add color to a home and create attractive themes in each room. Colorful throw pillows with floral patterns, lamp shades and paintings are easy ways to change the look of a room. These decorating tips are familiar to Natalia Suarez, another UGA student. She recalled her family's favorite ways to create a new look for summer, "I have noticed that my mom and grandmother tend to use bed covers that have summery prints, and they also open the windows more."

For the kitchen, invest in some new kitchen towels and place mats to bring summertime inside. Placing clear jars filled with shells or blue glass beads in the bathroom will create an ocean atmosphere. In the living room, take a Feng Shui approach and rearrange your furniture to make the area seem more open. Then, do away with that old firewood in the fireplace, sweep away the ashes, and replace them with flowers and big candles. Finally, turn the bedroom into a tropical getaway by draping a sheer canopy over the bed.

What about those dark areas of the home that are exposed to little or no light at all? Ellenberg offered a simple solution: "Hang mirrors to reflect nice views and light into dark corners of hallways, or have a mirror cut to fit an old window frame and place it in a room with few or no windows."

The designer also emphasized one important rule when redecorating your home for any season or occasion: there are no rules! Ellenberg then explained, "Ultimately, you are the one who will live in your home, and it should be filled with the things you love. It is better to have a few items you really like than a bunch of things you feel lukewarm about."
