Jugadoras hispanas participan en torneo profesional de tenis en Charleston por Patricia Zurita El torneo de tenis Family Circle Cup en Charleston, Carolina del Sur es una de las paradas favoritas de muchas jugadoras hispanohablantes en el circuito profesional de la WTA (Women Tennis Association). Virginia Ruano Pascual Este año, 12 jugadoras hispanas se dieron cita en la ciudad costera para medir sus habilidades tenísticas con las mejores jugadoras del mundo como la belga Justin Henin- Hardenne, ganadora de cuatro Grand Slams, o Nadia Petrova, joven estrella rusa y número cinco del mundo. El torneo se llevó acabo del 10 al 16 de abril y de las 12 jugadoras hispanas participando en sencillos y dobles, seis eran españolas, dos argentinas, dos venezolanas, una colombiana y una puertorriqueña. La especialista en dobles, la española Virginia Ruano Pascual, llegó a la final de dobles haciendo pareja con la joven estadounidense, Meghann Shaughnessy, pero sucumbieron en tres sets, 3-6 6-1 6-1, ante la mayor experiencia de la pareja Lisa Raymond, estadounidense, y Samantha Stosur de Australia, cabezas de serie número uno del torneo. Ruano Pascual es una de las jugadoras de dobles más galardonas del circuito donde ha logrado 44 títulos, incluyendo ocho Grand Slams y ganancias por $4,5 millones desde que se unió al circuito profesional en enero de 1992. Virginia Ruano Pascual Por su parte, en el cuadro de sencillos, la ex número uno del mundo y favorita para adjudicarse el torneo, Henin Hardenne, cayó sorpresivamente en semifinales ante la suiza y ocho del mundo, Patty Schnyder, en tres sets, 2-6 6-3 6-2. Antes de este partido, Henin- Hardenne tenía un récord de 15 partidos ganados y ninguno perdido en el Family Circle Cup, donde alzó la copa de ganadora en las ediciones del 2003 y 2005. En la final, Schnyder se midió a la rusa Petrova, quien venía de eliminar a la alemana y 14 del mundo, Anna-Lena Groenefeld. Petrova, basándose en su juego fuerte y consistente desde el fondo de la cancha tomó el primer set por 6-3. En el segundo, Schnyder decidió cambiar de táctica y mover más a Petrova consiguiendo así ganar por un ajustado 6-4. En el tercer y definitivo set, Petrova, a pesar de sufrir unas molestias en una pierna, regresó a su juego duro para someter a Schyner por un contundente 6-1 y alzarse así con el trofeo que la proclama como campeona del Family Circle Cup 2006. Durante la misma semana del torneo en Charleston y al otro lado del Océano Atlántico, una de las mejoras jugadoras españolas de todos los tiempos, Conchita Martínez, anunciaba su retirada del circuito profesional. Martínez pasó 18 temporadas compitiendo en la WTA y ganó un total de 36 torneos en sencillos y 15 en dobles, acumuló ganancias por total de 11,5 millones de dólares con un récord en sencillos de 739 partidos ganados por 297 perdidos. Su punto culminante es su larga trayectoria deportiva fue cuando logró alzarse con el trofeo de ganadora del prestigioso torneo de Wimbledon en 1994 tras derrotar a la mítica Martina Navratilova. Hispanic Players Hit Charleston for Professional Tennis Tournament by Patricia Zurita The Family Circle Cup is one of the favorite stops of many Spanish-speaking players of the Women Tennis Association (WTA). The tournament took place in Charleston, South Carolina on April 10-16. This year, twelve Hispanic players got together in the coastal city to compete against the best players in the world like Belgium's 4-time Grand Slam Champion Justine Henin-Hardenne and Nadia Petrova, a young Russian and number 5 in the world. Out of the 12 Hispanic players competing in the singles and doubles draw there were six Spaniards, two Argentineans, two Venezuelans, one Colombian and one Puerto Rican. Family Circle Cup Stadium Doubles specialist, Spanish player Virginia Ruano Pascual, reached the doubles final alongside American Meghan Shaughnessy, but fell in three sets 3-6, 6-1 and 6-1 to the experienced team of American Lisa Raymond and Australian Samantha Stosur. Ruano Pascual is one the most accomplished doubles player in the women's tennis circuit. She has 44 titles under her belt of which eight of them are Grand Slam titles. Since 1992, year in which she joined the tour, Ruano Pascual has earned approximately $4.5 million. In singles action, the number one seed and favorite to win the tournament, Henin-Hardenne, was surprised in the semi finals by the Swiss Patty Schnyder. The number eight in the world, Schnyder, took advantage of the crowd's support to beat Henin-Hardenne in three sets 2-6, 6-3 and 6-2. Before this match, Henin-Hardenne had a perfect 15-0 record at the Family Circle Cup, where she was a champion on 2003 and 2005. Virginia Ruano Pascual y Meghan Shaughnessy In the final, Schnyder faced the Russian Petrova, who had surpassed in her semi final the German and number 14 in the world Anna-Lena Groenefeld. Petrova relied on her strong baseline game to down Schnyder in three sets 6-3, 4-6 and 6-1 to claim the 2006 Family Circle Cup singles title. During the same week of the tournament in Charleston, but on the other side of the Atlantic, women's tennis was making headlines as well. Conchita Martinez, one of the best tennis players Spain has seen, announced her official retirement from the game she loves. Martinez spent 18 years on the WTA tour winning a total of 36 singles titles and 15 doubles titles. She had an astonishing 739-297 singles record and accrued $11.5 million in her career. The milestone of Conchita's career came in 1994 when she beat the legendary Martina Navratilova in the singles finals of Wimbledon.
