Estados Unidos del futuro

Las demostraciones masivas de apoyo a las demandas de los inmigrantes indocumentados han mostrado características novedosas que han sido destacadas en diversos análisis, como por ejemplo el rol jugado por conductores de programas radiales o pequeñas asociaciones de inmigrantes en la promoción de los eventos. Hay otras circunstancias poderosas que merecen ser destacadas y que tienen que ver con el inmenso optimismo que la gente ha venido manifestando. La alegría de todos los que participaron en las marchas del 10 de abril era contagiosa. No había diferencias de edad ni sexo ni condición social. Se sentía un regocijo que se reflejaba en las consignas que se coreaban, en los carteles que se portaban, y hasta en detalles muy significativos como el de la gente que andaba cargando bolsas de basura de plástico en sus bolsillos y que fueron usadas para no dejar nada de basura por los lugares recorridos.

El contraste entre el mensaje de los inmigrantes y el de los anti-inmigrantes no puede ser más marcado. Las propuestas y actitudes de los inmigrantes son positivas: "ĮQueremos trabajar! ĮQueremos ser aceptados por la comunidad! ĮQueremos respeto a nuestra dignidad! ĮQueremos mantener nuestras familias unidas! ĮQueremos educación para nuestros hijos!" No han habido agresiones verbales o físicas contra los anti-inmigrantes; no ha habido ningún tipo de violencia, a diferencia de lo, por ejemplo, ocurrido recientemente en varias ciudades de Francia. No se ha recurrido a insultos o comentarios degradantes de nadie.

Frente a esto, los planteamientos y acciones de los anti-inmigrantes han sido totalmente negativos, comenzando por las palabras utilizadas. Se refieren a los inmigrantes indocumentados como "ilegales", cuando, como señaló correctamente el Premio Nobel de la Paz y sobreviviente del holocausto Elie Wiesel, nadie es ilegal. Puede ser ilegal un documento, pero no una persona. Las consignas de los anti-inmigrantes enfatizan la negación, el desprecio y actitudes francamente racistas.

Frente a la proclamación de la vida por parte de los inmigrantes, se da la exaltación de la muerte por parte de los anti-inmigrantes. Debemos esforzarnos al máximo para que la lucha de los inmigrantes no pierda estas cualidades tan positivas. Esto va a ser un desafío, seguramente, por las represalias y contraataques que debemos esperar de los anti-inmigrantes.

Pero debemos pensar en el futuro. Muchos en las manifestaciones coreaban: "ĮUSA, USA!", y creo que el "USA" a la que se referían no era tanto el actual, sino el del futuro. No olvidemos que las tendencias actuales en crecimiento demográfico indican que en el 2010 la población latina puede llegar a 56 millones, y que en el 2050 el 30 por ciento de la población de Estados Unidos será latina. Si los latinos logramos mantener nuestra actitud optimista, solidaria y esperanzadora frente a la vida, podremos influir y quizá hacer más humana lo que el Papa Juan Pablo II calificó como una cultura de la muerte.

The USA of the future

The massive rallies in support of the demands of the undocumented immigrants have shown novel characteristics that have been highlighted in several analyses, such as the role that disk jockeys or small immigrant associations played in the promotion of the events. There are other powerful circumstances that deserve to be drawn attention to, and that are related to the great optimism demonstrated by the people. The joy in all who joined in the April 10 demonstrations was contagious. There were no differences of age, sex, or social status. The elation that was felt was reflected in the slogans that were shouted, in the banners that were carried, and even in small details like the people who were carrying plastic garbage bags in their pockets, and that were used to make sure that all the garbage was picked up.

The contrast between the messages and attitudes from immigrants and those from anti-immigrants could not be starker. The immigrants' proposals are positive: "We want to work! We want to be accepted by the community! Respect our dignity! We want to keep our families united! We want education for our children!" There have not been verbal or physical aggressions against the anti-immigrants; there has not been any kind of violence, unlike to what, as an example, happened recently in several places in France. There have not been insults or derogatory comments aimed at anybody.

On the opposite side, the statements and attitudes from the anti-immigrants have been negative, which can be seen even in the words they use. They allude to the undocumented immigrants as "illegals", when, as pointed out correctly by the Nobel Peace Prize winner and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, nobody is illegal. A document can be illegal, but not a person. The anti-immigrants' slogans and actions emphasize negativity, disdain, and attitudes that are outright racist.

The proclamation of life by the immigrants confronts the exaltation of death by the anti-immigrants. We should try very hard to maintain such positive attitudes in the immigrant quest. This will certainly be a challenge because we should expect retaliations and counterattacks from the anti-immigrants.

However, we must think in the future. Many people in the rallies sang: "USA, USA!" and I think that the "USA" to which they were referring to was no the current one, but that of the future. Let us not forget that the current demographic trends show that in the year 2010 the Latino population might reach 56 million, and that in the year 2050 30 percent of the US population will be Latino. If we, Latinos, manage to maintain our attitude towards life based on optimism, solidarity, and hope, we might be able to inspire and possibly make more human what Pope John Paul II called the culture of death.
