Carta del editor por Enrique Carrión Las manifestaciones en Francia y los inmigrantes del mundo Las recientes manifestaciones e incidentes en París y otras ciudades de Francia han puesto, una vez más, el tema de la inmigración en las portadas de los periódicos a nivel internacional. Francia, y Europa en general, tienen un problema de inmigración muy parecido al de Estados Unidos, es decir, miles y miles de inmigrantes llegan a Europa cada año de forma ilegal procedentes de países en vías de desarrollo de Africa del Norte, Nigeria, Turquía, India, Europa del Este y también de Latinoamérica buscando trabajo. Estos inmigrantes corren el peligro de morir en el intento pero deciden mudarse a países desarrollados donde la sociedad ha alcanzado un nivel alto en su calidad de vida y la mano de obra de sus propios ciudadanos escasea. Una vez más, una situación muy parecida a la que vive la sociedad de Estados Unidos donde miles de inmigrantes, la mayoría de ellos ilegalmente en el país, realizan trabajos de construcción, agricultura, jardinería, hostelería, etc., y con unos salarios bajos que, honestamente, no podrían ser pagados si un ciudadano estadounidense decidiese hacerlo. Estoy de acuerdo que existe un problema de inmigración en Estados Unidos y Europa, pero es un problema de oferta y demanda. Los políticos y la sociedad de países desarrollados deben admitir y entender que esos inmigrantes son necesarios para el porvenir de la economía. Mientras sigan existiendo trabajos de mano de obra, los cuales no pueden ser totalmente realizados sólo contando con trabajadores nativos, entonces se seguirá dependiendo de estos inmigrantes. Ese es el problema en Estados Unidos y Europa, han crecido y se han desarrollado tanto en las últimas décadas que la clase baja ha pasado a ser clase media y ya no quedan suficientes trabajadores de mano de obra para seguir construyendo y apoyando el sistema de crecimiento. Hay que empezar entendiendo que los inmigrantes son necesarios. Ahora bien, ¿cuál es el número mágico de trabajadores inmigrantes necesarios? ¿Cuántos se necesitan para sostener la economía y seguir creciendo? Si supiéramos ese número, los gobiernos tendrían la excusa de cerrar la frontera cuando se haya alcanzado ese número y volverla a abrir cuando se necesitan más. Pero al igual que es imposible deshacerse de todos los inmigrantes ilegales (es humana y económicamente imposible), también es imposible decidir cada día cuántos se necesitan. Pero existe una verdad absoluta, si todos, absolutamente todos los inmigrantes ilegalmente en Estados Unidos y Europa fueran deportados, entonces las economías sufrirían una quiebra en cuestión de días. Los inmigrantes ilegales son, ahora mismo y a pesar de que ya están en el país ilegalmente, muy importantes a la economía y son quienes cargan a sus espaldas al país con sus trabajos de mano de obra. Por otra parte, la diferencia entre el problema de inmigración entre Estados Unidos y Europa, es uno de religión, un tema por sí muy delicado. La mayoría de inmigrantes que llegan a Europa son musulmanes, una religión bastante más estricta que la cristiana. Los musulmanes traen su religión, costumbres y creencias a los países donde se mudan. Esto ha ocasionado un choque de culturas y religiones en Europa. Por el contrario, los inmigrantes latinoamericanos que llegan a Estados Unidos no intentan imponer su religión y costumbres. Es mucho más fácil para ellos adaptarse a esta nueva forma de vida, una razón de esto es que Estados Unidos ya es por sí un país con muchas religiones y culturas conviviendo desde hace muchos años bajo el mismo techo. No existe una solución sencilla al problema de la inmigración, pero es necesario entender que los inmigrantes ilegales no se mudan a Estados Unidos o Europa para ocasionar problemas o para tomar control del país, ellos van a trabajar y deben ser respetados por la gran contribución que hacen a las economías de los países donde viven. Editor's Letter by Enrique Carrión Demonstrations in France and the World's Immigrants Recent demonstrations in France and incidents in Paris an other French cities have placed, once again, the theme of immigration on the cover of newspapers at the international level. France, as well as most of Europe, deals with an issue of immigration that is very similar to that of the United States. Each year, thousands of immigrants enter Europe illegally from Northern Africa, Nigeria, Turkey, India, Eastern Europe and Latin America. These immigrants run the risk of death, but they decide to move to a developed country where society has reached a high level of quality of life and manual labor among their own citizens. Once again, a situation very much like the one that the United Sates faces where thousands of immigrants, the majority of them illegal, find jobs in construction, agriculture, landscape, hotel management, etc., and with a low salary, that honestly, would not be paid to an American citizen if he or she decided to do that same job. I agree that there is a problem with immigration in the United States and Europe, but it is a problem of supply and demand. The politicians and society of the developed countries should admit and understand that those immigrants are necessary for the economy. While there continue to be manual labor jobs, which cannot be filled solely by native workers, the country will continue to depend on immigrant workers. This is the problem in the United States and Europe, they have grown and developed so much in the last few decades that the low class has become middle class and there are not enough manual labor workers to continue building and supporting the system of growth. One must understand that immigrants are necessary. What is the magic number of immigrant workers needed? How many are needed to sustain the economy and so that is can continue growing? If we knew that number, the government would have the excuse to close the border when there were enough immigrants and open it when more were needed. But it is impossible (humanly and economically) to get rid of all the illegal immigrants (and to decide how many are needed daily). However, there is one absolute truth: if everyone, absolutely all the illegal immigrants in the United States and Europe, were deported, then the economy would drop in a matter of days. The illegal immigrants are currently very important to the economy and they are those who carry on their backs with their manual labor skills. On the other hand, the difference between the issue of immigration in the United States and Europe is one of religion, a very delicate subject. The majority of immigrants that arrive in Europe are Muslim, a religion much more strict than Christianity. Muslims bring their religion, customs and beliefs to the countries they settle in. This has caused a culture shock in Europe. However, Latin American immigrants do not try to impose their culture and religion on the United States. It is a lot easier for them to adapt to a new way of life, one reason is because the United States is already a country of many religions and cultures that has coexisted under the same roof for many years. There is not a simple solution to the issue of immigration, but it is necessary to understand that the illegal immigrants do not move to the United States or Europe to cause problems or to take control of the country, they come to work and they should be respected for the great economic contribution that they make to the country in which they live.
