Restaurante chino Peking, una tradición en Athens

Cualquier negocio que lleve 25 años sirviendo a la comunidad donde se encuentra merece un reconocimiento. Este es el caso del Restaurante Chino Peking en Barnett Shoals en Athens.

Cuando el área de Barnett Shoals era todavía un bosque con muy pocos negocios y casas en sus alrededores, Steve Chang y su familia decidieron arriesgarse y abrir un restaurante. Veinticinco años después, Peking se ha convertido en una tradición y lugar favorito para degustar comida china y, además, fue votado como mejor restaurante chino de Athens por los lectores del Athens Banner-Herald en el 2003.

Los padres de Steve Chang, quienes vinieron de Beijing, abrieron el restaurante cuando Steve tenía seis años. Al llegar a Estados Unidos, la familia Chang decidió establecerse en Atlanta porque era, según explica Steve, una ciudad grande y con muchas oportunidades. "Atlanta tiene una comunidad china bien organizada y hasta varios medios de comunicación, entre ellos un periódico", dice Steve.

El Restaurante Peking ofrece dos menús, uno especializado en comida auténtica china y otro más tradicional, y por esta razón Peking atrae tanto a clientes chinos como estadounidenses, pero según Steve, a los hispanos también les gusta mucho la comida china. "Muchos de nuestros clientes son hispanos", asegura Steve. "La comida china y Corona van de la mano". Uno de los platos favoritos entre los hispanos es el Jumpo, el cual es una sopa picante de fideos con pescado.

Peking es un restaurante con mucho espacio, tiene entre 25 y 30 mesas, pero también un salón para fiestas, reuniones de trabajo, cumpleaños, bodas y otros eventos con muchos invitados. El restaurante está abierto los siete días de la semana y ofrece bufé durante el almuerzo todos los días. El ambiente es muy agradable y las decoraciones tradicionales chinas ayudan a transportar al visitante en un viaje en el tiempo hacia China.

Peking ofrece entrega de comida a domicilio cuando se ordene un mínimo de $13.

Peking Chinese Restaurant, an Athens tradition

Any business that spends 25 years serving the community deserves to be recognized. This is the case with the Peking Chinese Restaurant on Barnett Shoals in Athens. Barnett Shoals was still undeveloped with few businesses and houses around when Steve Chang and his family decided to risk opening a restaurant. Twenty five years later, Peking has become a tradition and a favorite place for delicious Chinese food. In addition, Peking was voted the best Chinese Restaurant of Athens by the readers of the Athens Banner Herald in 2003.

Steve Chang's parents, who came from Beijing, opened the restaurant when Steve was six years old. Upon arriving in the United States, Chang's family decided to establish in Atlanta because it was, according to Steve, a large city with many opportunities. "Atlanta has a well organized Chinese community and an organized means of communication, including a newspaper," said Steve.

The Peking Restaurant offers two menus, one specializing in authentic Chinese and the other with other more traditional food. For this reason Peaking attracts as many Chinese patrons and Americans but, according to Steve, the Hispanic population has shown an increased liking to Chinese food. "Many of our clients are Hispanic," Steve commented. "The Chinese food and Coronas are popular." One of the most popular dishes among the Hispanics is the Jumpo, a spicy fish soup with noodles.

Peking is a spacious restaurant with 25 or 30 tables. In addition it has a larger room for parties, work functions, birthdays, weddings, and other larger social events. The restaurant is open seven days a week and offers a buffet style lunch everyday. The surroundings are very pleasant with traditional Chinese decorations that help create a realistic trip into China.
