Feria Latina de la Salud

El sábado, 15 de octubre se celebró la Feria Latina de la Salud en la Iglesia Católica Saint Joseph en Athens. Cientos de personas asistieron al evento donde tuvieron la oportunidad de recibir exámenes médicos gratis como presión sanguínea, colesterol, altura, peso, grasa, mamografía y vista, además de salud de los pies y la piel.

El evento de este año se llevó a cabo como resultado del éxito del Día de la Mujer Latina del año pasado. En esta ocasión, los Servicios Sociales Católicos de Athens y el American Cancer Society patrocinaron y organizaron el evento. Según datos ofrecidos por representantes de la American Cancer Society, "se superó el número de visitantes del año anterior".

Además de los servicios médicos ofrecidos ese día, los visitantes también pudieron obtener información de las muchas organizaciones, públicas y privadas, que ofrecen servicios a la comunidad hispana en Athens y el noreste de Georgia, al igual que música en vivo y comida. Grupos musicales como Grogus, Incatepec y el UGA Latino and Jazz Band amenizaron a los visitantes durante las seis horas que duró el evento.

Según información suministrada por las enfermeras del Hospital Athens Regional que ofrecieron exámenes de sangre, se agotaron las 250 unidades que trajeron al evento para realizar los exámenes.

Entre las organizaciones participantes estaban el Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos y del Caribe y la Asociación de Estudiantes Hispanos de la Universidad de Georgia, LifeLink de Georgia, People of Hope, el Departamento de Transporte Público y el Distrito Escolar del Condado de Athens-Clarke, varias clínicas y centro de salud como el Athens Neighborhood Center y organizaciones de educación e información sobre el SIDA y otras enfermedades, entre otras organizaciones.

Los más pequeños tuvieron la oportunidad de divertirse jugando y realizando actividades infantiles como pintarse las caras, lo cual muchos de ellos utilizaron para mostrar los colores de las banderas de sus países de origen.

Cabe resaltar la gran labor que realizaron los voluntarios, muchos de ellos estudiantes hispanos de escuelas secundarias locales, quienes ayudaron a traducir y guiar a los visitantes.

Latino Heath Fair

The Latin Health Fair took place at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church on Saturday, October 15th. Hundreds of people attended the event in which they had the opportunity to receive free medical exams, mammograms for women and a visit the podiatrist and dermatologist.

This year's event came about from the success of last year's Latin Woman Day. This time, Catholic Social Services of Athens and the American Cancer Society not only sponsored, but also organized the event. According to the American Cancer Society, "the number of visitors this year surpassed last year's number."

In addition to free medical exams, visitors also had the opportunity to obtain information from the many organizations, public and private, that offer services to the Hispanic community of Athens and northeastern Georgia, while enjoying live Latin music and refreshments. Musical groups such as Grogus, Incatepec and the UGA Latin and Jazz band entertained visitors during the six hour long event.

According to Athens Regional Hospital nurses who conducted blood tests, all 250 units brought to conduct the tests where utilized.

Among the organizations that participated in the event were the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, the Hispanic Student Association of the University of Georgia, Georgia LifeLink, People of Hope, the Department of Public Transportation, the Athens Clarke County School District, and various clinics such as Athens Neighborhood Center to name a few. In addition AIDS organizations were present to educate and inform people about this and other illnesses.

Children had the opportunity to enjoy playing and taking part in activities such as face painting, which many used to show the colors of their native flags.

It is important to stress the hard work of the volunteers, most of which are local Hispanic high school students, who assisted the visitors by guiding them through the fair and acting as translators.
