El número de residentes hispanos sigue creciendo en Athens y alrededores y esto quedó demostrado durante la Feria Latina de la Salud que se llevó a cabo en octubre en Athens. Tuve la oportunidad de asistir al evento y ver, desde diferentes ángulos, las personas que asistieron al mismo. Fui al evento como representante de Eco Latino y para encargarme de la mesa con información y cosas gratis que ofrecíamos, también fui como reportero para cubrir el evento, como encargado de ceremonias y ayudar con el micrófono y, finalmente, como visitante para aprovechar los exámenes médicos gratis que ahí se ofrecían. Al final de un día lleno de actividades, me di cuenta, una vez más, que la comunidad hispana local tiene muchas cosas buenas que ofrecer y que cuando nos lo proponemos y trabajamos en conjunto con otras organizaciones podemos realizar grandes y beneficiosos eventos como éste, los cuales son tan necesarios para muchos hispanos. La salud, educación e inmigración representan los temas más importantes dentro de cualquier familia hispana de primera y segunda generación y eventos como la Feria Latina de la Salud ayudan a informar y educar, de una manera fácil y cómoda, a muchas personas.

Llevo siete años estudiando, trabajando y viviendo en Athens y de vez en cuando descubro que hay alguien más u otra organización interesada en ayudar y prestar servicios a los hispanos. Durante la Feria Latina de la Salud pude ver cómo personas de diferentes países, colores de piel, acentos y clases sociales se unieron por una causa común: ayudar a aquellos que lo necesitan.

El evento llevó muchos meses de preparación y planificación. Los Servicios Sociales Católicos y el American Cancer Society patrocinaron y organizaron la feria de este año. El evento fue un éxito en todos los aspectos. Asistieron más personas que el año pasado y más organizaciones aprovecharon para dar a conocer e informar sobre sus servicios, lo cual debería ya ser suficiente motivo para celebrar pero algo que me llamó la atención fueron las personas que ayudaron durante el evento, no sólo los muchos voluntarios, pero también las personas que representaban a las organizaciones ahí presentes.

Muchos estudiantes hispanos de escuelas locales donaron su tiempo y conocimientos del inglés y español para traducir entre los visitantes y las personas que ofrecían los exámenes médicos y que no hablaban español. Estos voluntarios, los cuales eran fáciles de encontrar porque llevaban camisas amarillas muy llamativas, estaban por todos lados en la feria ayudando y traduciendo. Me llenó de alegría y orgullo ver a tantos jóvenes hispanos involucrados en un evento donde se ayudaba a otros hispanos. Estos jóvenes, algunos a punto de graduarse de la escuela secundaria y otros estudiando en la universidad, serán, dentro de pocos años, los líderes de la comunidad hispana, no sólo a nivel local pero también nacional.

La comunidad hispana respondió, una vez más, a un evento diseñado para nosotros y de esta manera ayudamos a que otras organizaciones e individuos quieran crear eventos pensando en las necesidades de los hispanos en el área de Athens y alrededores.

The number of Hispanic residents continues to grow in Athens and its surrounding areas and this fact was evident at the Latin Health Fair that took place in Athens this October. I had the opportunity to attend this event and interact with the visitors on many levels. I attended as an Eco Latino representative and monitored the information table by offering freebies. I also attended as a reporter in order to cover the event and to act as a master of ceremonies, making announcements and helping with the microphone. Finally, I attended as a visitor to take advantage of the free medical exams that were being offered. At the end of a busy day, I realized, once again, that the local Hispanic community has many good things to offer and when we work together with other organizations we can accomplish great and beneficial events like this, which for many Hispanics are absolutely necessary. Health, education and immigration are the major themes among any first or second generation Hispanic families and events like the Latin Health Fair help to inform and educate many people in an easy and convenient way.

I have studied, lived and worked in Athens for seven years and once in a while I discover that there is someone else or another organization interested in helping and offering services to Hispanics. During the Latin Health Fair I was able to see how people from different countries, with different skin colors, different accents and of different social classes united for a common cause- to help those in need.

The event took many weeks of planning and preparation. Catholic Social Services and the American Cancer Society sponsored and organized the fair this year. The event was a success in all aspects. More people attended this year than last year and more organizations took the opportunity to inform others about the services that they provide. Something that caught my attention was the people that helped during the event, not only the many volunteers, but also those that represented the organizations.

Many local Hispanic students donated their time and knowledge of English and Spanish to translate between visitors and the people that offered the medical exams who didn't speak Spanish. These volunteers, easily identified by their bright yellow shirts, were everywhere throughout the fair helping and translating. I was filled with happiness and pride upon seeing so many young Hispanics involved in an event that reached out other Hispanics. These youth, some at the point of graduating from high school and others studying at the university, will be, within a few years, the leaders of the Hispanic community, not only at the local level but also at national level.

The Hispanic community responded, once again, to an event planned with us in mind and by doing so we are helping other organizations and individuals to want to create more events designed for the needs of Hispanics in the Athens areas and surroundings.
