Festival de Cine Latinoamericano

El Museo de Arte de Georgia en Athens, en cooperación con el Departamento de Lenguas Romances de la Universidad de Georgia, presenta Festival Anual de Cine Latinoamericano.

Este año, el festival tiene al cine cubano como tema principal, específicamente los cambios socio-políticos ocurridos en la isla caribeña debido a la revolución de 1959. Además de ofrecer un recorrido histórico, las películas también ofrecen una mirada a la cultura cubana desde un punto de vista muy poco visto en Estados Unidos, con temas que oscilan entre una crítica burguesa post-revolucionaria del "agujero negro" intelectual a la feminidad cubana de 1979 a la historia de dos músicos contemporáneos y su lucha para reconciliar la fama y fortuna mundial con la familia e historia de su hogar. La idea de salir de la isla está presente en estas películas y se investigan ideas de la familia, el exilio, la separación, el pertenecer, la esperanza y la autonomía.

El Doctor José B. Alvarez, profesor asociado de español de UGA, organiza el festival para coincidir con su clase SPAN 4082: Cine Cubano. La clase verá 17 películas cubanas producidas entre 1956 y 2005 y que abarcan varias décadas de la historia cubana. Cinco de la 17 se verán en el Festival de Cine y la comunidad latina de Athens está invitada a asistir. "Lo que es realmente interesante sobre estas películas es que son muy difíciles de encontrar aquí en los Estados Unidos", dice Lori Oxford, profesora asistente en el Departamento de Español de UGA y también profesora de la clase de cine cubano. "De hecho, tuvimos que arreglar el horario el martes antes de la primera proyección porque algunas películas no estaban disponibles". Se anima a miembros de la audiencia a llegar temprano y salir tarde debido a que los asientos se llenan rápidamente y una discusión corta entre estudiantes y miembros de la facultad normalmente se realiza después de las proyecciones.

Latin American Film Festival

The Georgia Museum of Art in Athens, in cooperation with the Department of Romance Languages at the University of Georgia, is hosting its annual Latin American Film Festival. This year's fest focuses on Cuban cinema, specifically the changing social and political atmospheres brought on by the world-famous 1959 Revolution. In addition to being award-winning works of cinematic art, the films presented offer a slice of Cuban culture that most Americans do not normally have access to, with themes ranging from bourgeoisie criticism of the post-revolutionary intellectual black hole to the nature of 1979 Cuban womanhood to the tale of two modern musicians and their struggles to reconcile fame and fortune abroad with family and history at home. The theme of leaving is definitely treated in several of the films, with notions of exile, family, separation, belonging, hope, and autonomy artfully explored.

Doctor José B. Alvarez, associate professor of Spanish at UGA, is organizing the festival in order to coincide with his class, SPAN 4082: Cine Cubano. The class will view a total of 17 Cuban Films made between 1956 and 2005 and spanning several decades of Cuban history. Five of the 17 will be shown as the Film Festival and the Athens community is encouraged to attend, Latino or otherwise. "What's really interesting about these films is the fact that they're really hard to acquire here in the United States," states Lori Oxford, graduate teaching assistant in the UGA Spanish department as well as the other professor of the Cine Cubano class. "In fact, we had to rearrange the lineup the Tuesday before the first screening because of the unavailability of some titles." Audience members are encouraged to come early and stay late, as seats fill quickly and a short discussion by students and faculty members usually follows screenings.
