Vecindario de viviendas de bajo costo

En la actualidad, un millón de residentes de Georgia viven en casas móviles y uno de cada ocho residentes es expulsado de sus hogares. People of Hope, Inc., una organización sin fines lucrativos, está dispuesta a ayudar a cambiar estas estadísticas. La organización, creada por familias multiculturales y de bajos ingresos quienes se han enfrentado al miedo de perder sus casas, ha decidido tomar acción en contra de esta injusticia. Recaudando fondos, esta organización aspira a crear una comunidad de casas móviles diseñadas con el propósito de crear la oportunidad de vivienda a bajo costo y tomará la responsabilidad de ser propietarios de dicha comunidad. Durante "Una noche de esperanza" patrocinada por la Iglesia Presbiteriana Covenant, el jueves 18 de agosto, los pastores Mark Harper y Ken Meeks presentaron a Rick Ufford-Chase y People of Hope, Inc. Rick Ufford-Chase es moderador de la Iglesia Presbiteriana Estados Unidos y uno de los fundadores del programa "Borderlinks" que ha estado trabajando con asuntos fronterizos de Estados Unidos y México hace ya más de 15 años. Durante el programa, los presentes, en su mayoría hispanos, contaron las historias de su vida. Acto seguido, la congregación presentó una donación muy generosa a "People of Hope, Inc.". También recibieron donaciones de Unified Government of Athens Clarke County, Iglesia Presbiteriana de Estados Unidos, la Iglesia Metodista, Servicios Sociales Católicos y Georgia Community Loan Fund, la cual ayudó con la compra de los 17,2 acres que se usarán para albergar lotes de 40 casas móviles y facilidades para reuniones comunitarias, recreación y áreas verdes. Sin embargo, todaví朦 se necesitan donaciones para las construcciones de calles, aceras, el diseño de las áreas verdes y otras facilidades. Pero como dijo Moisés González, miembro de People of Hope, Inc., "como una comunidad, nunca nos retiramos de este proyecto". People of Hope, Inc. tiene fe que se alcanzará la meta establecida. La organización y sus miembros tienen esperanza de copiar el proyecto de 60 viviendas móviles ya construidas en New Hampshire y Vermont. Es evidente que la organización está muy agradecida con todos los residentes de Athens por las donaciones tan generosas que han ofrecido y que permitirá que se realice su sueño.

El terreno de dicha comunidad está bajo el cuidado de Athens Land Trust Inc. para asegurar el precio ya definido. Según Porter, encargada de la fundación de préstamos para la comunidad de Georgia, "estamos cambiando la forma en que Estados Unidos ve las casas prefabricadas. La comunidad, compuesta de casas sencillas y dobles, será propiedad exclusiva y administrada por People of Hope, Inc. Ellos se han propuesto construir un lugar seguro y administrado por ellos mismos para evitar el constante miedo de evicción y la posibilidad de que, sin aviso, les suban el alquiler de sus viviendas. Porter también dijo, "la casa de uno es su reino. No hay nada más precioso que tener seguridad en su reino".

Neighborhood with Affordable Housing

One million Georgians live in mobile homes and one out of eight face eviction. People of Hope, Inc, a non profit organization, plans to change this statistic. The organization, founded by low-income multicultural families who have faced the fear of losing their homes, has decided to take action against what they call an injustice. Through fund-raising, the organization aspires to create a permanently affordable, resident designed and resident controlled mobile home community in Clarke County.

During an evening of hope held by Covenant Presbyterian Church on Thursday, August 18, Pastors Mark Harper and Ken Meeks presented Rick Ufford-Chase and the People of Hope, Inc. Ufford-Chase has worked on the U.S./Mexico border for 15 years and is co-founder and co-director of Borderlinks, a program that deals with issues of trade, globalization and concerns of migrants. Currently, he is a moderator of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A.

During the program, the guests were able to relate their stories to the congregation and afterwards, People of Hope, Inc. was presented with a generous offering from the church community. Additional financial support from Unified Government of Athens Clarke County, the Presbyterian Church U.S.A., the Methodist Church, Catholic Social Services and Georgia Community Loan fund aided in the purchase of the 17.2 acre property equipped for 40 mobile home pads, community center building, playground and picnic area. However, further funding is needed for roads, sidewalks, landscaping and other facilities. But as People of Hope, Inc. member, Moises Gonzales, stated, "As a community, we will never give up."

The People of Hope have faith that they will reach their goal and are inspired by the 60 self owned mobile communities in New Hampshire and Vermont who have been successful in their mission. It was quite evident that the organization was deeply grateful to the residents of Athens for all their donations.

The land for the mobile home park has been placed in trust with the Athens Land Trust, Inc. to insure it stays affordable. According to Ms. Porter of the Georgia Community Loan Fund, Inc., "We are changing the way the U.S. looks at manufactured housing." The community, with a mixture of single wide and double wide mobile homes, will be owned and managed by the People of Hope, Inc. They resolve to pull together and build a safe mobile home park that they can control without living in constant fear of being evicted or having the rent raised too high. Porter put it best by stating, "Your home is your kingdom. There is nothing more precious than having security in your kingdom."
