Décimo aniversario de la banda ecléctica Grogus

Agosto es el décimo aniversario desde la creación del grupo de música Grogus. Durante estos diez años, el grupo de Athens, Georgia ha obtenido un número importante de aficionados. Los seguidores de Grogus describen su música de muchas maneras: jazz, salsa, afro-caribeña, reggae, merengue y hip-hop, entre otros. La música de la banda, aunque integrada por diferentes instrumentos, tiene en las secciones de percusión y trompetas dos de las más importantes.

Grogus consiste de cinco a 18 integrantes, dependiendo de la noche (generalmente hay entre seis y diez músicos por concierto). Los miembros de la agrupación son versátiles y la mayoría pueden tocar más de un instrumento y casi todos son vocalistas. Algunos integrantes de Grogus son Tino Garrido, Kevin Hyde, Carl Lindberg, Marlon Patton, Camilo Ochoa, David Nelson, Natalie Dickerson, Ryan Wendell y Aramis Ferrer.

De igual manera, algunos de los integrantes también son parte de otro grupo de música: Squat. Grogus se creó cuando Squat no estuvo disponible para tocar. Aunque Grogus no existía en ese momento, Lindberg le aseguró al dueño del local que "si te gusta Santana, entonces te gustará Grogus", y es así como el dueño del local reservó a Grogus y nació una nueva banda de jazz latino. Luego, Garrido trajo los elementos de salsa y el sonido de la banda continuó desarrollándose hasta llegar al complejo, pero agradable, grupo de ritmos y sonidos que tocan en la actualidad.

Grogus es una banda de Athens pero varios de sus miembros vienen de diferentes países del mundo. Lindberg y Wendell (también conocido como "Manito") fueron compañeros de cuarto en la Universidad de Georgia. Garrido (venezolano), Hyde, Dickerson y Nelson también asistieron a UGA. Ferrer es de Cuba y vino a Grogus gracias a sus conexiones con Garrido. Ochoa, colombiano, estaba estudiando música en la Universidad Truett-McConnell cerca de Athens cuando fue presentado a la banda por parte de Hyde.

A través de los años, ha habido diferentes movimientos en el grupo y sus integrantes. Nelson y su nueva esposa se mudan a Nueva York para estudiar y por eso, desafortunadamente, él no va a poder continuar tocando con la banda. Por otro lado, Garrido (quien recientemente regresó de Venezuela) y Ochoa (quien también toca con la banda de salsa Tamboricua) han regresado a tocar con Grogus. Garrido está ocupado construyendo una página Web para Grogus (la cual debe estar disponible a finales de augusto).

En la actualidad, Grogus está trabajando en su EP (Extended Play), el cual debe estar finalizado este otoño. También, Grogus está entusiasmado con su nuevo álbum, el cual grabarán en el estudio de música 'Tree Sound' en Atlanta donde ya han grabado otros grupos famosos como Outkast (hip-hop).

Grogus se va a presentar en el "Sunflower Music Festival" en los Jardines Botánicos de Athens en Milledge Avenue el martes, 9 de agosto a las 7 p.m. Tanto Grogus como Squat tocan los martes por la noche en el nuevo restaurante Farm 255 en Athens.

Tenth anniversary of the eclectic band Grogus

This August is the tenth anniversary of the band Grogus, and in these ten years a large group of fans has developed. Grogus' fans describe their music in many ways: jazz, salsa, afro-caribbean, reggae, meringue, hip-hop, and the list goes on. The band's music, although composed of many different instruments, has strong percussion and horn sections.

Grogus consists of five to 18 members, depending on the night. (Usual six to ten musicians play at an event.) Each member of the group is very versatile. Most are multi-instrumentalists and almost all are vocalists. Some of the members of Grogus are Tino Garrido, Kevin Hyde, Carl Lindberg, Marlon Patton, Camilo Ochoa, David Nelson, Natalie Dickerson, Ryan Wendell, and Aramis Ferrer.

Some of the members of Grogus are also a part of the band Squat. Grogus actually began when Squat was unavailable for an event. Even though Grogus did not exist at the time, Lindberg assured the client that "if they liked Santana, they would like Grogus," so the client booked Grogus, and a new Latin jazz band was born. Later, Garrido would bring the influence of salsa to the group, and their sound continued to develop into what it is today.

Grogus is a local Athens band, but some of the members come from various countries of the world. Lindberg and Wendell (a.k.a. "Manito") were roommates at the University of Georgia. Garrido (from Venezuela), Hyde, Dickerson, and Nelson also attended UGA. Ferrer is from Cuba and came to Grogus through connections with Garrido. Ochoa, from Colombia, was studying music at Truett-McConnell College when he was introduced to the band by Hyde.

There are many new developments with the band and its members. Nelson and his new wife will be moving to New York City to study, and unfortunately he will not be playing with Grogus for the time being. On the other hand, Garrido (who recently returned from Venezuela) and Ochoa (who also plays with the salsa band Tamboricua) have returned to play with Grogus. Garrido is busy working on a website for the band, which should be available by the end of August.

Grogus is working on their EP (Extended Play) for its release this fall. Also, they are very excited about recording a live album at the Tree Sound Studios in Atlanta (where various established groups, such as Outkast, have recorded).

Grogus will be performing at the Sunflower Music Series at the Botanical Gardens in Athens on August ninth at seven o'clock. Also, look for the members of Grogus and Squat to appear for Tuesday Night Jazz at Farm 255 in downtown Athens.
