Consejería en salud mental y rehabilitación

A medida que llegan más hispanos a Athens y condados del noreste de Georgia, crece el número de personas dispuestas a ayudar al resto de la comunidad a través de servicios sociales y otros medios. Cada día, doctores, maestros, abogados, ingenieros, obreros y otras personas deciden hacer de Athens su nuevo hogar. Un ejemplo de estos individuos que se mudan a esta área del noreste de Georgia es María Granda.

María llegó a Athens, acompañada de su hija Nora, hace poco menos de dos años y desde el principio sintió la necesidad de ayudar a otros hispanos. María nació en Cuba pero lleva 31 años viviendo en Estados Unidos. María tiene una Maestría en Revitalización y Salud Mental de la Universidad de Miami en Florida y también está certificada por la Universidad de Minnesota para enseñar en español. "Existe una gran necesidad en la comunidad", admite María, quien también ha vivido en España y Puerto Rico. "Me gusta ayudar y mejorar la vida de otros".

María ofrece clases de inglés gratis todos los lunes y miércoles de 7:30 a 9 de la noche en las instalaciones de la Iglesia Presbiteriana en el centro de Athens, pero también ofrece su vasto conocimiento en salud mental a aquellas personas que necesitan consejería profesional. "Nora, tres voluntarios y yo enseñamos inglés básico e intermedio", explica María. "Trabajo y colaboro con la Iglesia Presbiteriana como contratista independiente. La iglesia promociona mis servicios entre sus fieles y aquellos que lo necesiten". Alrededor de unos 15 estudiantes asisten a las clases, lo cual, según explica María, ayuda a que exista una mejor y más personalizada relación entre los maestros y los estudiantes. Además, María ofrece sus servicios de consejería los lunes y miércoles de 1 a 6 de la tarde en una oficina ubicada en Casa de Amistad en Commerce Road. "Cuando llegué a Athens me comuniqué con Terry Salguero quien está muy involucrada con la comunidad hispana y desde entonces trabajamos juntas", explica María. "Si un paciente no tiene fondos para pagar una visita, los envío a Terry y ella los provee con alternativas para poder pagar". Las sesiones se ofrecen en una oficina ubicada en Casa de Amistad y cuestan $20 por visita. "Casa de Amistad, junto a Terry Salguero y su equipo están realizando un gran trabajo ayudando a la comunidad hispana", admite María. "Ofrecen muchos servicios y ayuda. Tienen ropa gratis y clases de computación, entre otras muchas cosas".

María ofrece servicios de psicología en estrés, ansiedad, pánico, depresión, problemas de adaptación cultural, adicción al alcohol y las drogas, crisis familiar, entre otros. María también provee información a sus clientes sobre otras agencias en Athens y alrededores que prestan ayuda a la comunidad, en caso que ella no pueda ayudarlos con un problema específico.

María cuenta con la ayuda de su hija Nora y tres voluntarios para dar clases de inglés. "Supe sobre las clases de inglés a través de una de mis pacientes", explica Joel Groft, quiropráctico y quien aprendió español mientras vivía y trabajaba en California. "Trabajé en una clínica en California donde iban muchos agricultores hispanos y eso me ayudó a aprender y practicar español".

Por su parte, Jennifer Steiner es profesora y estudiante de español de la Universidad de Georgia. "Me gusta mucho enseñar y además, estas clases me dan la oportunidad de ver el proceso de aprendizaje de los estudiantes bilingües", dice Jennifer, quien está certificada para enseñar inglés como segundo idioma. El equipo de voluntarios también incluye a Kassie Hodges. Todos dedican su tiempo y conocimiento totalmente gratis.

Counseling in mental health and rehabilitation

As more Hispanics come to Athens and northeast counties in Georgia, the number of people open to help the rest of the community through social services and others. Everyday, doctors, teachers, lawyers, engineers, laborer and other people decide to make Athens their new home. An example of these individuals that move to this area of the northeast of Georgia is Maria Granda.

Maria came to Athens, accompanied by her daughter Nora, a little less than two years ago and since the beginning felt the necessity to help other Hispanics. Maria was born in Cuba but has lived in the U.S. for 31 years. Maria has a Masters degree in Revitalization and Mental Health from the University of Miami in Florida and was also certified by the University of Minnesota to teach Spanish. "There is a big necessity in the community, Maria admits, who as also lived in Spain and Puerto Rico. "I like to help and improve the lives of others."

Maria offers free English classes every Monday and Wednesday from 7:30 to 9:00 at night in the Presbyterian Church installations in Downtown Athens, but also offers her vast knowledge in mental Health to those people that need professional advice. "Nora, three volunteers and I teach basic and intermediate English," explains Maria. "I work and collaborate with the Presbyterian Church as an independent contractor. The church promotes my services among its faithful followers and to the ones that need them." About 15 students attend the class, which, Maria Explains, helps a better and more personalized relation with teachers and students. In addition, Maria offers her counsel services on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 6 in the afternoon in an office located in the Friendship House on Commerce Road. "When I came to Athens I talked to Terry Salguero who is very involved with the Hispanic community and we work together since then," explains Maria. "If a patient has no money to pay a visit, I send him to Terry and she provides alternatives in order to pay." The sessions are offered in an office located in Friendship House and cost $20 per visit. "Friendship House together with Terry Salguero and her team are doing a great job helping the Hispanic community", Maria admits.

Maria counts with help from her daughter Nora and 3 volunteers to give English classes. "I knew about the English classes through one of my patients," explains Joel Groft, chiropractor who learnt Spanish while living and working in California. "I worked in a Clinic in California where many Hispanic farmers went and that helped me learn and practice Spanish."

Jennifer Steiner is a teacher and Spanish student in the University of Georgia. "I like to teach and also, in these classes they give me the opportunity to see the learning process of bilingual students", Jennifer says, who is certified to teach English as a second language. The volunteer team also includes Kassie Hodges. Everybody dedicate their time and knowledge entirely free.
