Nueva biblioteca y centro educativo de Pinewoods

El vecindario de casas móviles de Pinewoods Estates en Athens se ha convertido en referencia obligada de la comunidad hispana de Athens. Con la mayoría de sus residentes de origen hispano y por ser la sede del centro de servicios sociales Oasis Católico Santa Rafaela, este vecindario ubicado en el Este de la ciudad no ha pasado desapercibido por el resto de la comunidad.

En marzo del 2005, la Biblioteca y Centro Educativo de la Comunidad de Pinewoods abrió sus puertas oficialmente para el deleite de todos los residentes hispanos y aquellos interesados en saber más sobre las culturas hispanas, el idioma español, la música y el arte que los países hispanohablantes tienen que ofrecer. La biblioteca fue fruto del convenio y trabajo entre el Sistema de Bibliotecas Públicas de Athens y el Centro de Arte Lyndon House, y el apoyo de varias personas y organizaciones como la Hermana Margarita del Oasis Santa Rafaela y el Consulado de México en Atlanta. La biblioteca se construyó con dinero proveniente de una donación del Instituto Federal para Museos y Servicios Bibliotecarios.

Miguel Vicente es el coordinador de la nueva biblioteca. Según Vicente, la biblioteca ayudará a que todas las personas de Athens sepan más sobre los hispanos y viceversa. "Es una manera de integrar a la comunidad para que todos nos conozcamos mejor. Podemos aprender y disfrutar de nuestros idiomas y culturas", dice Vicente. La biblioteca no sólo ofrece la oportunidad de leer libros en español e inglés pero también ofrece clases de inglés y español, clases de arte, música y computación, acceso a Internet y preparación para adultos para tomar el examen GED o equivalente a graduarse de la escuela secundaria, entre otros.

Vicente es asistido por María Duarte, quien recientemente se graduó con honores de la Escuela Secundaria Clarke Central en Athens y asistirá a la Universidad de Georgia a partir de agosto. Entre sus responsabilidades, María se asegura que todos los jóvenes que quieran jugar video juegos en las computadoras de la biblioteca se acostumbren al hábito de la lectura antes. "Si los niños y niñas quieren jugar en la computadora durante media hora, entonces deben leer un libro durante media hora también", explica María, quien obtuvo una beca para estudiar en UGA gracias a sus buenas notas.

La biblioteca también servirá como centro para exhibiciones de arte de artistas hispanos y también se planea trabajar e intercambiar actividades con un museo en México.

Según la alcaldesa de Athens, Heidi Davison, quien asistió a la inauguración, la biblioteca refleja la importancia que está tomando el español en Athens. "Empleados del condado como conductores de autobús y oficiales de policía están tomando clases de español para servir mejor a los residentes hispanos y muchos otros departamentos públicos están imprimiendo información en español", dijo Davison. Existen otras iniciativas en Athens para intentar ofrecer un mejor servicio a los residentes hispanohablantes al mismo tiempo que intentar atraer a más de ellos a utilizar esos servicios. El Departamento de Servicios de Ocio del Condado Clarke ofrece ligas hispanas de baloncesto y fútbol, al igual que visitas en español al zoológico de Athens.

Otro programa que el condado tiene planeado es reunir a familias hispanas con familias estadounidenses para promover el intercambio cultural.

Con la frase, "Educación, la llave para una vida mejor", la biblioteca y su personal invitan a toda la comunidad a utilizar y aprovechar todos los servicios que esta presta.

New Library and Educational Center in Pinewoods

The mobile homes neighborhood, Pinewoods Estates, has become an obligate reference site for the Hispanic community in Athens. Being the majority of its residents from Hispanic origin as well as being the headquarters for social services provider Oasis Catolico Santa Rafaela, this neighborhood located on the East side has not been unnoticed by the rest of the community.

In March 2005, Pinewoods Library and Education Center opened its doors officially and to the delight of the Hispanic residents and the others interested in knowing more about Hispanic cultures, the Spanish Language, music and art of Spanish-speaking countries. The library was the result of the agreement and work between several organizations such as Athens Public Library System and Lyndon House Art Center, and the support of other people and organizations such as Sister Margarita from Oasis Catolico Santa Rafaela and the Mexican Consulate in Atlanta. The Library was built with money from a donation given by the Federal Institute for Museums and Library Services.

Miguel Vicente is the coordinator of the new Library. According to Vicente, the library will help people from Athens learn more about Hispanics and vice versa. "It is a way to integrate the community in order to know each other better. We can learn and enjoy from our languages and cultures," says Vicente. The library not only offers the opportunity to read books in Spanish and English but also offers English and Spanish classes, art classes, music and computers, access to the Internet and a preparation courses for adults to take the GED, among others.

Vicente is helped by Maria Duarte, who recently graduated with Honors from Clarke Central High School in Athens and will also attend UGA starting in August. Among her responsibilities, she makes sure the teenagers and kids that want to play video games in the library computers get used to the habit of reading before." If children want to play in the computer for half an a hour, then they should read a book for half an hour too," explains Maria who obtained a scholarship to study in UGA because of her good grades.

The library will also serve as center for art exhibitions from Hispanic Artists and it is also planned to work and exchange activities with a museum in Mexico.

According to the Athens Mayor, Heidi Davison, who attended the inauguration, the library reflects the importance that Spanish is taking in Athens. "County employees such as bus drivers and police officers are taking Spanish classes to serve better Hispanic residents and many other public departments are printing information in Spanish", said Davison. There are other initiatives in Athens to offer a better service for the Spanish-Speaking residents and at the same time attract them to use the services more. Athens Clarke County Leisure Services Department offers Hispanic Leagues of basketball and soccer, as well as visits in Spanish to the Athens Zoo.

Another program that the county has planned is to unite Hispanic and American families to promote cultural exchange.

With the phrase, "Education, is the key for a better life," the library and its staff invite the community to use and take advantage of all the services it offers.
