Carta al editor La ciudad y comunidad en la cual CertainTeed ha operado durante 30 años merece una explicación sobre a las emisiones de aire tóxico con altos índices de químicos dañinos a las cuales son expuestos. CertainTeed ha contaminado su comunidad, robado su aire y dado enfermedades a sus familias con sólo un apretón de manos y una palmadita en la espalda de parte del gobierno local y estatal. Envenenando a gente con la excusa de progreso y economía no es correcto. ¿Dónde están sus representantes políticos para defender sus derechos? Así como otras ciudades que están creciendo y progresando están adoptando leyes y principios ambientales como una forma de prevenir daños a sus ciudadanos y protegiendo el bienestar general, el Condado Clarke también debería considerarlo. Más de 800 ciudadanos han pedido que CertainTeed y políticos tomen cartas en el asunto. Que vergüenza para la democracia que nos hayan dicho que la importancia que le damos al aire limpio y a los niños son segundos en la lista de CertainTeed, la cual es responsable por arrojar partículas cancerígenas al aire. Si CertainTeed recibe el visto bueno, pronto tendremos que respirar aún más particulas contaminantes. Pero los oficiales del gobierno local y estatal nos dicen que deberíamos tener más fibra y ser más sanos. Bueno, nos ayudaría deshacernos de las toxinas en el aire. Y no preste atención a los ejecutivos franceses de CertainTeed. Nosotros les damos nuestro aire, nuestros hijos y nuestra salud y a cambio ellos nos dan trabajos y prosperidad económica. Mientras caminamos por nuestra ciudad y vamos tosiendo, podemos decir con orgullo, "No hay ningún otro lugar como Athens". Larga vida al montón de humo en Athena Drive. Pero tal vez, CertainTeed podría colorear las partículas contaminantes de rojo y negro (los colores de la Universidad de Georgia) y así sería más bonito. Llame a su gobierno local y estatal y dígales a sus representantes que las dos chimeneas de CertainTeed parecen dos cigarros botando humo. CertainTeed has polluted their community, stolen their air and given their family diseases with a handshake and pat on the back from local and state government. Slowly poisoning people in the name of economics is not politically correct. Where are their elected representatives to defend their rights? As other progressive cities around the nation are adopting the Precautionary Principle as a way of preventing harm to their citizens and protecting the common good, Athens Clarke County should consider it. Over 800 citizens have demanded that CertainTeed and elected and regulatory officials address the dangerous air toxic emissions increase an expansion will put into local air. What an embarrassment to democracy that we have been told our values for safe air and healthy children come second to CertainTeed's irresponsible disposal of their atmospheric carcinogenic combustion pollutants. If CertainTeed is permitted, we will soon have to breathe fiberglass particulates in greater amounts. But local and state government officials tell us that we should get more fiber. It helps get the toxins out. And pay no attention to the French executives behind the curtain. We give them our air, our children and our health, and they give us jobs and economic prosperity. We'll be coughing all the way to the bank saying, "There's no place like Athens." Long live the smoke stacks on Athena Drive. But maybe they can color the pollutants UGA red and black as they enter into our atmosphere as opposed to the current putrid, dull gray people notice traveling the bypass. It's such an eyesore. Isn't there some aesthetic ordinance against that? Call local government. Tell them it looks like two gigantic cigarettes smoking up the place. Jill McElheney Micah's Mission
