Españolas ganan torneo en dobles

El equipo formado por Virginia Ruano Pascual y Conchita Martínez ganó el prestigioso torneo de dobles 'Family Circle Cup' en Charleston, Carolina del Sur.

Las españolas, las segundas favoritas del torneo, derrotaron en la final al equipo formado por Iveta Benesova y Kveta Peschke de la República Checa en dos sets, 6-1 6-4.

Ruano Pascual, siete veces campeona de Grand Slam en dobles, es considerada una de las mejores jugadoras de dobles del mundo, alcanzando gran parte de su fama jugando al lado de la argentina Paola Suarez. Ruano Pascual es actualmente la número uno del mundo en dobles y ha ganado cuatro torneos de dobles este año, tres con Suarez y el más reciente en Charleston con Martínez.

Martínez, quien llegó a la final individual el año pasado en este torneo, es mejor conocida por su juego en individuales, logrando el título de Wimbledon en 1994. Martínez, quien celebró su cumpleaños número 33 durante el torneo, ha ganado 12 torneos de dobles y 33 en individuales durante sus 17 años de carrera profesional.

El torneo, en el cual participan las mejores jugadoras del mundo, se juega en cancha de arcilla y ayuda a las jugadoras a prepararse para la temporada sobre esta superficie, con el Abierto francés o Roland Garros en París (uno de los cuatro torneos de Grand Slam) en mayo como el trofeo más codiciado.

En la rama de individuales, el torneo fue testigo de una de los retornos a las canchas más esperados del año, el de la belga Justin Henin-Hardene quien se convirtió en sólo la segunda jugadora no sembrada en llegar a la final en 32 años de historia del torneo. Charleston fue solamente el segundo torneo en el que participa la belga durante este año, después de estar apartada de las canchas casi todo el año pasado por culpa de una lesión. La belga reapareció en el circuito profesional hace unas semanas en el torneo de Indian Wells en Miami, Florida donde llegó a los cuartos de final. Henin-Hardene derrotó a la rusa Elena Dementieva por 7-5 6-4 en la final de Charleston.

Con 8.175 espectadores en la cancha Central presenciando la final de individuales el domingo, el torneo alcanzó un nuevo record de asistencia con 92.350. El buen clima reinante durante la semana y el impresionante regreso de Henin-Hardene ayudaron a batir el record establecido el año anterior.

El torneo repartió 1,3 millones de dólares y con su victoria, Henin-Hardene se embolsó 189.000 dólares.

Spaniards Win Doubles Title

The team of Virginia Ruano Pascual and Conchita Martínez won the doubles title at the prestigious Family Circle Cup tennis tournament in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Spaniards, seeded number two in the tournament, beat in the final the duo of Iveta Benesova and Kveta Peschke of the Czech Republic in two straight sets, 6-1 6-4.

Ruano Pascual, seven times Grand Slam doubles champion, is considered one of the best doubles players in the world, having accomplished most of her fame teaming up with Argentinean Paola Suarez. Ruano Pascual is currently ranked number one in the world in doubles and has won four doubles tournaments this year, three with Suarez and the latest one at Charleston with Martínez.

Martínez, who reached the final in singles last year at the same venue, is better known for her singles game, having won Wimbledon in 1994. Martínez, who celebrated her 33 birthday during the tournament, has won 12 doubles titles and an impressive 33 singles titles in her 17 years career.

The tournament, which is attended by the best players in the world, is played on clay and helps players prepare for the clay court season ahead and the French Open or Roland Garros in Paris (one of the four Grand Slam) as the ultimate goal in May.

In the singles draw, the tournament was witness to one of the most anticipated come backs of the year, as Belgian Justin Henin-Hardene became only the second unseeded champion in the tournaments' 32 years history. Charleston was just Henin-Hardene's second tournament this year, after dealing with an injury most of last year. She reappeared on the circuit a few weeks earlier at Indian Wells in Miami, Florida where she reached the quarterfinals. Henin-Hardene beat Russian Elena Dementieva 7-5 6-4 in the final in Charleston.

With a crowd of 8,175 at the Stadium court to watch the singles final on Sunday, the tournament reached a new attendance record of 92,350. Good weather and Henin-Hardenne's impressive run helped break the record set the previous year.

The tournament purse was $1.3 million and with her victory, Henin-Hardene earned $189,000.
