Latinos y el desarrollo socieconómico del sureste

La Universidad de Georgia organiza la conferencia, "Encontrando soluciones: los latinos y el desarrollo socioeconómico del sureste", en el Georgia Center for Continuing Education en el campus de la universidad el lunes, 6 y martes, 7 de junio. Se necesita inscribirse para asistir a la conferencia.

Esta es la tercera conferencia que UGA organiza, la cual se concentra en temas relaciones con los latinos viviendo y trabajando en el sureste. Este año, el evento cuenta con la participación de Maria Hinojosa, presentadora del programa de radio "Latino USA" en la cadena Nacional Public Radio; Elias Lopez, economista de la Universidad de California-Davis; Sam Zamarrita, senador estatal de Georgia quien forma parte de los comités del senado para desarrollo económico, seguro y empleo, y transporte.

Este año, la conferencia se concentra en: 1) Temas relacionados a la fuerza laboral latina incluyendo educación y habilidades de crecimiento; empleo, inmigración legal y temas financieros, y desarrollo de líderes; 2) analizar el papel de la fuerza laboral latina en el futuro socioeconómico del sureste y, en particular, desarrollo económico y comunitario del sureste; y 3) posibles soluciones a barreras para el desarrollo socioeconómico y los problemas que enfrenta la fuerza laboral latina, incluyendo medidas legislativas, creación de leyes y acuerdos multilaterales.

"Esta conferencia se realiza en un momento adecuado", dijo Art Dunning, vicepresidente de la oficina de servicio y asistencia pública de UGA. "Nueve de los diez condados con más rápido crecimiento latino están ubicados en el sureste. En Georgia, la población latina ha crecido en un 300 por ciento entre 1990 y el 2000. Estamos satisfechos que la Universidad de Georgia organiza esta conferencia para tratar muchos de los temas que enfrentan los latinos viviendo, trabajando y contribuyendo al desarrollo comunitario y económico del sureste".

Latinos and the Socioeconomic Development of the Southeast

The University of Georgia will host the conference, "Finding Solutions: Latinos and the Socioeconomic Development of the Southeast," at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education on June 6 and 7. Registration is required to attend the conference.

This will be the third conference hosted by UGA that focuses on issues related to Latinos living and working in the Southeast. This year's featured speakers include Maria Hinojosa, the host of NPR's "Latino USA"; Elias Lopez, an economist at the University of California-Davis; and Sam Zamarripa, a Georgia state senator who serves on the senate economic development, insurance and labor, and transportation committees.

This year's Latino conference will focus on: 1) Latino workforce issues including education and skill development; labor and employment issues; legal immigration and financial issues; and leadership development; 2) analyzing the role of the Latino workforce in the socioeconomic future of the Southeast, and in particular, the Southeast's economic and community development; and 3) encouraging discussion of potential solutions to barriers to socioeconomic development and to the problems facing the Latino workforce, including legislative measures, policy development and multilateral agreements.

"This conference is extremely timely," said Art Dunning, UGA vice president for public service and outreach. "Nine of the ten fastest growing Latino counties in the United States are located in the Southeast. In Georgia alone, the Latino population increased by 300 percent between 1990 and 2000. We are pleased that the University of Georgia is hosting this conference that will address the many issues that Latinos face living, working and contributing to community and economic development in the Southeast."
