Estudiantes se gradúan del programa Even Start por Enrique Carrión Debido a diferentes razones, algunas personas no pueden terminar la escuela secundaria, obtener un diploma universitario o aprender a hablar inglés antes de mudarse a los Estados Unidos. Pero en mayo del 2005, varios residentes de Athens lograron su meta de toda la vida y se graduaron de la escuela secundaria, consiguieron convertirse en profesionales y pasaron un curso de inglés conocido como ESOL o inglés para estudiantes de otros idiomas. Con una ceremonia celebrada en la Iglesia Bautista Hill Chapel en Hancock Avenue en Athens, alrededor de 40 estudiantes recibieron sus diplomas por haber completado el GED (Diploma de Educación General, un equivalente de la escuela secundaria), el curso de ESOL (inglés como segundo idioma) y el curso de CNA (certificado de asistente en enfermería). Además del personal y maestros del Even Start, al evento también asistieron, voluntarios que participan en el programa, personal de la Universidad de Georgia, Athens Tech, el superintendente del Distrito Escolar del Condado Clarke Lewis Holloway, la representante estatal Jane Kidd y el senador estatal Brian Kemp, entre otros. Estos cursos son parte del programa Even Start. Even Start ofrece varias clases, cursos y programas para niños y adultos de pocos recursos en la comunidad. Even Start trabaja en conjunto con otros grupos e instituciones como UGA y Athens Tech para ofrecer educación gratuita para adultos quienes de otra forma no podrían terminar la escuela secundaria, asistir a la universidad o aprender inglés. El Pastor Jones de la Iglesia Bautista Hill Chapel, dio la bienvenida a los graduados y a los presentes diciendo, "Es mejor encender una vela que maldecir a la oscuridad". Jorge Avila, quien se graduó en los cursos GED y CNA el mes pasado, ha estado involucrado en el programa durante seis años. "Ya he hablado y recibido una oferta de trabajo del Hospital St. Mary's", dijo Avila, quien vino de México hace 14 años. "St. Mary's necesita personal bilingüe y me ofrecieron trabajar con ellos". Avila comenzó a estudiar inglés en Even Start hace seis años y desde entonces ha completado varios cursos. "Cuando vine de México, realicé varios trabajos, pero decidí comenzar a estudiar hace seis años influenciado por mi familia", dijo Avila. "Siempre me apoyaron". El programa Even Start corre el peligro de desaparecer debido a los recortes de presupuesto del gobierno. Even Start en Athens recibe $650.000 cada año del dinero federal que el gobierno estatal gestiona para llevar a cabo sus programas, clases y cursos, y también recibe gran ayuda de otras organizaciones como UGA, Athens Tech, el Distrito Escolar del Condado Clarke y voluntarios de la comunidad. But on May, 2005 several Athens residents achieved their life-long goal of graduating from high school, becoming career professionals, and passing the English proficiency class known as ESOL (English for Students of other Languages). At a ceremony at Hill Chapel Baptist Church on Hancock Avenue in Athens, some 40 students received their diplomas for completing the GED (General Education Diploma, a high school equivalent), ESL course (English as a Second Language), and CNA course (Certified Nursing Assistant). The event was also attended by course teachers, volunteers, staff from University of Georgia, Athens Tech, and Even Start Program, Clarke County School District Superintendent Lewis Holloway, Georgia State Representative Jane Kidd, and Georgia State Senator Brian Kemp, among others. The courses are part of Even Start program. Even Start offers several classes, courses, and programs for children and adults underserved in the community. Even Start works in conjunction with other groups and institutions such as UGA and Athens Tech to offer affordable education to adults who otherwise wouldn't able to finish high school, attend college or learn English. Pastor Jones, Hill Chapel Baptist Church, welcomed the graduates and people present by saying, "It's better to light a candle that to curse darkness." Jorge Avila, who graduated in both GED and CNA courses last month, has been involved in the program for six years. "I have already talked to and got a job offer from St. Mary's Hospital," said Avila who came from Mexico 14 years ago. "St. Mary's needs bilingual personnel and they offered me to work with them." Avila began studying English at Even Start several years ago and since then he has completed other courses as well. "When I came from Mexico, I was working different jobs, but I decided to begin studying six years ago because of my family," said Avila. "They supported me all the time." The Even Start program is in danger of disappearing due to government budget cuts. Even Start in Athens receives $650,000 annually from the State government to run all its programs, classes and courses, and also receives great help from other organizations such as UGA, Athens Tech, Clarke County School District, and community volunteers. "We might have enough money to run the program for one more year," said Javier Zapata, ESOL director and Family Engagement Specialist. "State Representative Jane Kidd and State Senator Brian Kemp were here at the ceremony. They have both seen the program worked before and they are great supporters of it."
