Amanda Rodríguez de Athens recibe premio

Amanda D. Rodríguez, quien comenzó su negocio de cuidado para mascotas después de graduarse de la Universidad de Georgia, fue seleccionada como Joven Empresaria del Año 2005 por parte de la Administración de Pequeños Negocios de los Estados Unidos (SBA por sus siglas en inglés). Rodríguez, quien nació en Riverdale, Georgia, creó su negocio en el 2001 cuando tenía 24 años. Su madre, Brenda, nació en los Estados Unidos, pero su padre, Angel Santiago, es de Puerto Rico.

Rodríguez, quien emplea a más de 12 personas, recibió el premio a nivel estatal en abril de parte de Terri L. Denison, directora de SBA Georgia. Rodríguez fue nominada por parte del Centro de Desarrollo de Pequeños Negocios de la Universidad de Georgia.

Su negocio, Petropolis Inc., ofrece una gama completa de servicios de cuidado para mascotas con su servicio innovador de cuidado sin jaulas al igual que instalaciones para limpieza y arreglo de mascotas. También hay una tienda donde se venden una gran variedad de productos. Además, Petropolis ofrece clases de adiestramiento para perros usando las últimas técnicas de entrenamiento.

El negocio de Rodríguez ha dado beneficios desde su segundo año en operación y con las ganancias ha podido contratar nuevos empleados durante los últimos años.

Antes de crear su propio negocio en el 2001, Rodríguez tomó la clase "Cómo comenzar un negocio" en el Centro de Desarrollo de Pequeños Negocios en la Universidad de Georgia en Athens. También se reunió con un consejero del centro para desarrollar un plan de negocios. Después de ser rechazada por un banco, Rodríguez fue al Bank of America donde su plan de negocios y su idea de crear un negocio de cuidado de mascotas fueron bien recibidos. El banco aprobó un préstamo garantizado por parte de la SBA por el monto de $41.000 para ayudarla a comenzar su negocio.

Petropolis abrió sus puertas con 4.875 pies cuadrados y además añadió espacio en su segundo año. En la actualidad, el local necesita más espacio y Rodríguez está trabajando con su consejero en una propuesta para un préstamo para comprar un terreno y construir su propio edificio en un futuro cercano.

Además de haber comenzado un exitoso negocio, Rodríguez ha logrado ofrecer algo a su comunidad. Fundó la organización de rescate sin fines de lucro "Helping Paws Rescue", la cual salva animales que están a punto de ser sacrificados en la perrera local. Más de 240 animales han sido salvados y ahora viven con sus nuevos dueños.

Además, ha patrocinado programas de otras organizaciones incluyendo eventos de la organización "Athens Canine Rescue". También ayuda a preparar el evento anual de este grupo en su negocio para recoger fondos y permite que la organización utilice las instalaciones para lavar perros sin costo alguno.

Cuando era joven, Rodríguez se interesó en su actual trabajo mientras entrenaba y participa en competiciones con su primera mascota, un dálmata llamado Lacey. En la Universidad de Georgia, decidió que trabajar con animales es lo que quería hacer en el futuro. Mientras estudiaba, Rodríguez creó un pequeño negocio llamado "Home Alone Pet Care", donde cuidaba animales en sus hogares o en el suyo mientras los dueños estaban de viaje.

Rodríguez consiguió su carrera en Psicología en UGA, tomando tantas clases como fuera posible relacionadas con el comportamiento de los animales. Su plan era mudarse de Athens cuando terminara la universidad pero, como ella mismo dijo, "esta comunidad ama a los animales".

Amanda D. Rodriguez, who started her full-service pet care business as a recent graduate of the University of Georgia, was selected the 2005 Young Entrepreneur of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Rodriguez started her company in 2001 at age 24. She is a native of Riverdale, GA. Her mother, Brenda, was born in the United States and her father, Angel Santiago, is from Puerto Rico.

Rodriguez, who has provided jobs for over a dozen people, received her statewide award last month from Terri L. Denison, SBA Georgia District Director. Rodriguez was nominated for her award by the University of Georgia Small Business Development Center in Athens.

Her business, Petropolis Inc., offers a full range of pet care services from its innovative cage-free "doggie day-care" and over-night boarding to self-serve, or full service, dog bathing and grooming facilities. There is also a pet boutique offering a wide variety of products and pet themed gift items. In addition, Petropolis offers dog obedience classes using the latest training techniques.

Rodriguez's business has been profitable since its second year and with expanding revenues, she has been able to increase her employment over the past several years.

Before she started her company in 2001, Rodriguez took a "How to Start a Business" class at the University of Georgia Small Business Development Center in Athens. She also met with an SBDC business consultant to develop a business plan. After being turned down by one bank, Rodriguez went to Bank of America, which liked her business plan and her concept for a pet care business. The bank approved an SBA guaranteed loan of $41,000 to help get her business going.

Petropolis opened with 4,875 square feet of space and added additional space in the second year. The business now needs more room and Rodriguez is working with her SBDC consultant on a loan proposal to buy land and build her own building in the near future.

Besides turning her startup into a successful business, Rodriguez has managed to give back to her community. She formed "Helping Paws Rescue," a non-profit animal rescue organization that literally saves animals just hours before they are scheduled to be euthanized by the local pound. Over 240 animals have been saved and placed with permanent owners.

Moreover, she has sponsored other organizations' programs including events by Athens Canine Rescue. She hosts the fund raising events at her business and allows the organization to use her dog wash facility at no charge.

As a youngster, Rodriguez was drawn to her current career while doing obedience training and competition with her first pet, a Dalmatian named Lacey. At the University of Georgia, she decided that working with animals would be her future endeavor. During college, Rodriguez established a small business called "Home Alone Pet Care." She would tend to animals in their home or at hers while their owners were away.

Rodriguez pursued her degree in Psychology at Georgia, taking all the classes she could find relating to animal cognition and behavior. She had planned to leave Athens after college. But as Rodriguez puts it, "there is such an animal loving community here."
