Festival Internacional en Athens

Cada año, la comunidad extranjera de Athens tiene la oportunidad de dar a conocer sus diferentes culturas, lenguajes, música, bailes y otros aspectos tradicionales de sus países a los residentes de Athens.

El sábado, 9 de abril se llevó a cabo el Festival Internacional en el centro de Athens con la participación de varias organizaciones, la mayoría representantes de la Universidad de Georgia. Entre los países presentes estuvieron Burundi, Rusia, Colombia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, China, Filipinas, Rumania, Malasia, Singapur, Japón, Pakistán, India, Taiwán y Canadá. También se presentaron grupos de estudiantes internacionales como la Asociación de Estudiantes Hispanos (HSA por sus siglas en inglés), Students for Latino Empowerment, el programa de intercambio de UGA en Francia, médicos internacionales (Globe Med UGA), Amnistía Internacional, Asociación de Estudiantes de Eritrea, Asociación de Estudiantes Musulmanes, Asociación de Estudiantes Africanos y el programa de intercambio laboral a nivel mundial AIESEC.

El festival también contó con una sección para los más pequeños donde se ofrecían actividades como pintar la cara y helado gratis. Cada organización y país ofreció información a los visitantes, los cuales podían hablar con los estudiantes, ver fotos, escuchar música tradicional, realizar actividades y practicar otros idiomas.

También se preparó una tarima donde a lo largo de todo el día, varios grupos realizaron presentaciones y bailes en vivo. Durante el descanso entre actos, los presentadores mantuvieron al público ocupado haciendo preguntas y ofreciendo premios a los ganadores.

Según Patricia Zurita, vicepresidenta de relaciones públicas de la Asociación de Estudiantes Hispanos de UGA, "el festival ayuda a que las personas sepan cuántas culturas existen en Athens". "También ayuda a informar a la gente sobre lo que los estudiantes latinos y la HSA hacen", añadió la ecuatoriana.

International Festival in Athens

Every year, the international community from Athens has the opportunity to share with others their different cultures, languages, music, dances and other international aspects of their countries to residents of Athens.

On Saturday, April 9th an International Festival in Athens downtown was held with the participation of many organizations and the majority of representatives of the University of Georgia. Among the countries participating were Burundi, Russia, Colombia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, China, Philippines, Romania, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Pakistan, India, Taiwan and Canada. Also, groups of international students were present such as Hispanic Students Association (HSA), Students for Latino Empowerment, the exchange program of UGA in France, international doctors (Globe Med UGA), International Amnesty, Students Association from Eritrea, Students Association of Muslims, Students Association of Africans and the international exchange labor program called AIESEC.

The festival also had a section for the little ones where activities such as face painting and free snow cones were offered for free. Every organization and country displayed information for the visitors, who were able to talk to the students, look at pictures, listen to traditional music, participate in activities and practice other languages.

There was also a platform where, throughout the day, several groups made presentations and danced. During the break between acts, the hosts kept the public entertained by asking them questions and offering gifts to the winners.

"The festival helps people know how many cultures exist in Athens," said Patricia Zurita, vice-president of public relations for the UGA Hispanic Student Association. "It also helps inform people about what the Latino students and HSA do," the Ecuadorian added.
