Republicanos proponen eliminar ciudadanía a hijos de inmigrantes

En el más reciente ejemplo de una serie de propuestas extremistas y mal intencionadas, varios miembros del Partido Republicano en la Cámara de Diputados han enfocado sus esfuerzos en los niños inocentes. Este último ataque contra los inmigrantes incluye leyes para eliminar la ciudadanía como derecho de nacimiento, lo cual significa que todos los bebés nacidos en EE UU de padres indocumentados no obtendrían la ciudadanía estadounidense de manera automática. Esta propuesta va más allá del debate actual sobre el tema de inmigración, y nos presenta un desafío de mal gusto e irresponsable en cuanto a los valores fundamentales de EE UU. En fin, no hará más que perjudicar a los niños.

Entre los proyectos de ley que contemplan la eliminación de la ciudadanía como derecho de nacimiento tenemos: "The Reducing Immigration to a Genuinely Healthy Total (RIGHT) Act", presentado por el Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO); "Citizenship Reform Act", presentado por el Rep. Nathan Deal (R-GA); y "Enforcement First Immigration Reform Act", presentado por el Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R-AZ).

Proponer eliminar la ciudadanía como derecho de nacimiento no contribuya al actual debate sobre inmigración. Más bien, esta propuesta dañaría severamente a EE UU al crear una nueva y permanente subclase de jóvenes sin ningún país al cual considerar propio.

La Constitución de EE UU garantiza la ciudadanía como derecho de nacimiento a todas las personas nacidas en el país, y la Corte Suprema ha mantenido y defendido este derecho fundamental a lo largo de los últimos 150 años. Aquellas personas que quieren negar la ciudadanía a esos niños están buscando interferir con la Constitución con el objetivo de buscar réditos políticos para poder aparentar ser "duros" en temas de inmigración.

El público americano necesita soluciones reales, y no propuestas que pueden parecer duras o severas hacia los inmigrantes pero que en realidad son dañinas y no efectivas. Se necesita reformas integrales en inmigración que solucionen las causas intrínsecas de la inmigración de indocumentados para poder resolver nuestros verdaderos problemas migratorios. Eliminar la ciudadanía como derecho de nacimiento- y a su vez hacerle daño a niños inocentes- resulta mal intencionado y ofensivo. Los diputados del Partido Republicano necesitan oir que han ido muy lejos, y los del Partido Demócrata necesitan saber lo mucho que le preocupa este tema a la comunidad latina.

House Republicans Propose to Eliminate Birthright Citizenship

In the latest in a series of extremist, mean-spirited immigration proposals, several House Republicans have set their sights on innocent children. The latest attack on immigrants includes legislation to eliminate birthright citizenship, meaning that babies born to undocumented parents in the U.S. would not automatically obtain U.S. citizenship. This proposal goes well beyond the boundaries of the immigration debate and presents a nasty and irresponsible challenge to fundamental American values and would do little more than punish children.

Bills that contain the elimination of birthright citizenship include: "The Reducing Immigration to a Genuinely Healthy Total (RIGHT) Act" introduced by Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO); the "Citizenship Reform Act" introduced by Rep. Nathan Deal (R-GA), and the "Enforcement First Immigration Reform Act" introduced by Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R-AZ).

Proposing the elimination of birthright citizenship does nothing to advance the current immigration debate and will not reduce undocumented immigration. Rather, this proposal would create great harm to the U.S. by creating a new, permanent underclass of children with no country to call their own.

The U.S. Constitution guarantees birthright citizenship to all persons born in the United States, and the Supreme Court has upheld this fundamental right over the past 150 years. Those who want to deny these children citizenship are willing to tamper with the Constitution in order to score political points by appearing "tough on immigration."

The American public wants real solutions, not proposals that look tough on immigrants but are ineffective and harmful. Comprehensive immigration reforms that solve the root causes of undocumented immigration are necessary to resolve our very real immigration problems. Eliminating birthright citizenship and harming innocent babies is mean-spirited and offensive. House Republicans need to hear that they have gone too far and Democrats need to hear how much the Latino community cares about this issue.
