Señor Carrión:

En su columna del 11 de marzo en el Athens Banner-Herald, usted Dijo:

"Si la propuesta de ley (HR 256) está intentado deshacerse de los inmigrantes ilegales en Georgia, entonces adelante, pero no esperen pagar el mismo bajo precio por un pollo cuando vayan al supermercado. Si los trabajadores en las plantas procesadoras de pollos son despedidos y enviados a sus países, la industria avícola tendrá que contratar a empleados legales quienes demandarán salario mínimo y muchos beneficios, resultando en un incremento en el precio del pollo y de cualquier otro producto y servicio donde los inmigrantes ilegales sean contratados en gran número".

¡Wow! ¡Que gran idea! El contratar trabajadores legales haría que subieran los sueldos. Esto quiere decir que el poder de compra de estos trabajadores también aumentaría y sería mayor que el de los trabajadores ilegales. Esto sería algo positivo para nuestra economía. O, ¿Usted cree que nuestra economía es lo suficientemente fuerte ahora mismo?

Sólo un tonto creería lo que usted dice, que todos tendremos que pagar más por el pollo, las hamburguesas o cualquier otra cosa que sea producida por trabajadores legales. En la agricultura, por ejemplo, la mano de obra representa sólo una pequeña parte del costo de lo que pagamos en el supermercado. Por esta razón, ¿quién no puede pagar uno o diez centavos más por una lechuga?

Para terminar, no esté tan a favor de la mano de obra barata, la cual usted dice que los estadounidenses no podemos vivir sin ella. Inclusive los periodistas como usted pueden ser reemplazados por extranjeros dispuestos a trabajar por menos dinero del que usted cobra por escribir estas tonterías.

Letter to the Editor

Mr. Carrion:

In your March 11 column that ran in the Athens Banner-Herald, you said:

"If HR 256 is aimed at getting rid of illegal immigrants in Georgia, supporters should be ready for some consequences. For instance, they shouldn't expect to pay the same low price for chicken in the grocery store. If illegal immigrants working at chicken processing plants return to their home countries, the poultry industry will have to hire legal employees who will demand the minimum wage and a lot of benefits. That, in turn, will increase the price of chicken, or of any of the other products and services from businesses where illegal immigrants are hired in great numbers."

Wow! What a concept! Hiring legal workers would drive up wages! Wouldn't this mean that their buying power would increase beyond that of illegal aliens? Wouldn't this be an even greater plus for our economy? Or do you think our economy is healthy enough as it is?

Only a complete fool buys your argument that we'd all have to pay far more for chicken, hamburgers or anything else if they were produced by legal workers. In agriculture, for example, labor represents only a fraction of the final cost of what we buy in the supermarket. So, who can't afford to pay a nickel or dime more for a head of lettuce?

Finally, don't be so enamored of this 'cheap' labor you say Americans can't live without. Even journalists like you can be replaced by foreigners willing to work for a lot less than you're being paid to write such nonsense.
