Padres y estudiantes obtienen información sobre becas

Estudiantes hispanos en las escuelas del Condado de Clarke obtuvieron información sobre las oportunidades de solicitar y conseguir una beca para realizar estudiaos universitarios. La Fundación de Becas Hispanas realizó una presentación en Athens en noviembre. El evento también incluyó una feria de recursos universitarios donde varias universidades presentaron información y representantes para responder cualquier preguntas que tuvieran los estudiantes y sus padres sobre las oportunidades de cursar estudios universitarios. Las intituciones educativas presentes fueron: Athens Tech, Piedmont College, Berry College, Reinhardt College, Oglethorpe University, Georgia College and State University y Georgia Tech. De igual manera, la Universidad de Georgia estuvo representada por la organización estudiantil 'Student for Latino Empowerment'.

Este año fue la tercera vez que el evento se lleva a cabo en la Escuela Secundaria Clarke Central. "Athens es sólo una de tres ciudades en Georgia donde el Fondo de Becas Hispanas lleva a cabo esta presentación", dijo Sam Hicks, consejero estudiantil en Clarke Central. "El fondo nos contactó y nos pidió que hicieramos este evento y decidimos que sería una gran oportunidad para nuestros estudiantes hispanos y sus padres para comenzar a familiarizarse con las universidades y las becas".

Según Hicks, las dos personas responsables por el éxito del evento este año son Suzanne Smalley, coordinadora de pequeñas donaciones de Clarke Central, y Maritza Ortiz Licameli, directora del Proyecto de Asistencia en Georgia del Fondo de Becas Hispanas. Las dos ayudaron a organizar el evento.

Al principio de la presentación, Licameli presentó a Fátima Macedo, ganadora de la beca HSF Raising Star y ex estudiante de Clarke Central, quien habló sobre su experiencia. En la actualidad estudia en una universidad estatal y ofreció sugerencias a los estudiantes sobre cómo comenzar y tener una brillante carrera universitaria. "Sabía que tenía que ir a la universidad y obtener una educación para poder conseguir mis metas", dijo Macedo quien también recomendó a los estudiantes que se involucren en sus escuelas, iglesias y comunidades.

El Fondo de Becas Hispanas es el principal proveedor de becas a nivel nacional para estudiantes hispanos.

Parents and Students Learn About Scholarships

Hispanic students in middle and high schools in Clarke County learned about opportunities to apply and get scholarships to study in colleges and universities. The Hispanic Scholarship Fund made a presentation at Clarke Central High School in Athens on November. The event also featured a college fair where several colleges and universities set up booths with information and representatives to answer any questions students and parents might have about seeking higher education. The educational institutes present at the event were: Athens Tech, Piedmont College, Berry College, Reinhardt College, Oglethorpe University, Georgia College and State University, and Georgia Tech. 'Student for Latino Empowerment,' a student organization at the University of Georgia in Athens, was also present.

This year was the third time the event has taken place at Clarke Central. "Athens is only one of three cities in Georgia where the Hispanic Scholarship Fund does this presentation," said Sam Hicks, counselor at Clarke Central. "The fund contacted us and asked us to do this event. We thought it would be a great opportunity for Hispanic students and their parents to become more familiar with colleges and universities, as well as scholarships."

According to Hicks, the two people behind the success of this event every year are Suzanne Smalley, Clarke Central small grant coordinator, and Matitza Ortiz Licameli, director of Georgia Outreach Project for the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. They both helped to organize the event.

At the beginning of the presentation, Licameli introduced Fátima Macedo, winner of the HSF Raising Star Scholar and former Clarke Central student, who talked about her experience. She is currently studying at a state university and shared suggestions with other students about beginning and having a successful college career. "I knew I had to attend college and get an education in order to get where I wanted to get," said Macedo who also recommended students to become involved in their schools, churches, and communities.

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund is the number one scholarship provider nationwide for Hispanic students.
