Residentes hispanos usan el autobús

Los residentes hispanos de varios vecindarios del este de Athens tuvieron la oportunidad de familiarizarse con una nueva ruta de servico del autobús público de la ciudad. Los residentes de Pinewood Estates, Country Corners, Hallmark y Spring Valley, donde la mayoría de sus residentes son hispanos, pudieron usar gratis el autobús el sábado, 13 de noviembre.

La nueva Ruta 31, también conocida como 'The Link', permite a las personas ir a Wal-Mart en Lexington Road y Bi-Lo en North Avenue en Athens, además de otras paradas. La excursión fue organizada por la Hermana Margarita del Oasis Católico Santa Rafaela en Pinewood Estates, People of Hope, el Comité de Asuntos Hispanos y el Departamento de Transporte Público de Athens.

Durante meses, varias organizaciones sin fines de lucro han intentado que una línea de autobús llegue a varios vecindarios más allá del Loop 10 en Athens. Lo más lejos que llegaba una línea de autobús en el lado este de la ciudad era hasta Athens Tech. "Algunos residentes no usaban el autobús porque no estaban familiarizados con el servicio", dijo la Hermana Margarita. "Después de la excursión, creo que se sienten mucho más cómodos". La persona encargada de manejar el autobús es de origen hispano y habla español.

Las personas aprovecharon la excursión gratis y asistieron en gran número. El autobús estuvo lleno y varias personas realizaron el viaje de pie. "Es muy bueno poder ir a Wal-Mart y bajarse en frente de la entrada, poder ir comprar y que te pasen a recoger una hora más tarde", dijo Daniel, un residente de Pinewood Estates. El autobús también paró en el centro de Athens, en frente del edificio de la Alcaldía, y el conductor explicó a los viajeros cómo realizar conecciones con otras rutas al resto de la ciudad. El costo del viaje en el autobús de la Ruta 31 es de 1,50 dólares.

Hispanic Residents Use Bus Line

Hispanic residents of several neighborhoods of East Athens had an opportunity to become familiar with a new bus line. Residents from Pinewood Estates, Country Corners, Hallmark and Spring Valley, where the majority of its residents are Hispanics, were able to ride a bus free of charge on Saturday, November 13.

The new Route 31, also known as The Link, allows people to go to Wal-Mart on Lexington Road and Bi-Lo on North Avenue in Athens, among other stops. The tour was organized by Sister Margarita of Oasis Católico Santa Rafaela in Pinewood Estates, People of Hope, Hispanic Concerns Committee, and Athens Transit.

For months, several local non-profit organizations have been lobbying to have a bus line serve several neighborhoods outside the Athens loop. The farthest any bus line would go on the East side of town was Athens Tech. "Some residents were reluctant to use the bus because they were not familiar with it," said Sister Margarita. "After today's tour I believe they are more comfortable." A Spanish-speaking driver drives the bus on Route 31.

People took advantage of the free tour and responded in great numbers. The bus was full and people were standing up. "It is great to be able to go to Wal-Mart and be dropped-off at the front door, then do the shopping and be picked-up an hour later," said Daniel, a Pinewood Estates resident. The bus also stopped in downtown Athens, in front of City Hall, and the driver explained to the riders how to make connections to other routes from there. The cost to ride the bus on Route 31 is $1.50.
