Carta al editor Estudiar no es fácil Los jóvenes latinos nos enfrentamos a varios problemas al llegar a Estados Unidos y querer estudiar. Es muy difícil ir a la escuela y tratar de llevar el ritmo de vida de los otros estudiantes, tener buenas notas en las clases y entender lo que te dicen en otro idioma diferente al que hemos hablado durante muchos años. Pero gracias a programas como ESOL, clases de literatura que ayudan a aprender inglés y al esfuerzo de los maestros que siempre están dispuestos a ayudar, podemos aprender y seguir adelante. Es muy importante la ayuda y preocupación que demuestran los maestros a los nuevos estudiantes y a los que no saben hablar inglés. Estas son algunas opiniones de alumnos y maestros de la Escuela Secundaria Clarke Central: "Gracias a la ayuda de muchos maestros de esta escuela he podido llegar a entender, escribir y leer en inglés, también a mi esfuerzo y ganas de salir adelante", dijo Luis. "Estudiar y trabajar es muy difícil , pero vale la pena porque el aprender día a día algo diferente me hace sentir que puedo realizar mis metas. Además, tengo la suerte de tener maestros que hablan un inglés muy claro y entendible," explica Lorena. "Es muy importante para mí que las personas que no saben inglés aprendan a hablarlo y escribirlo. Como maestra, mi meta es ayudar a cada estudiante a conseguirlo ya sea en Estados Unidos o su país de origen, una habilidad que es fundamental para su futuro es el ser bilingüe. Es muy importante ser bilingüe pues les da a mis estudiantes una elección acerca de poder compartir ambos idiomas", dijo Ms. Bolgla. "Aprender a hablar, leer y escribir en inglés es crítico para cualquiera viviendo en Estados Undios o alrededor del mundo. Como maestra y voluntaria en la comunidad latina de Athens es personalmente importante para mí que la juventud latina que viene a este país obtenga una buena educación. Los latinos vienen en una variedad de personalidades y niveles. Ellos vienen también de varios lugares y países. Todos estos factores influyen a la hora de aprender inglés. Yo lo encuentro muy útil aprender y entender la vida de un latino en este país antes de poder comenzar a educarlos. Afortunadamente, soy capaz de comunicarme con los miembros de familia de mis estudiantes latinos que no hablan inglés. Esto me permite romper las barreras. Han habido grandes problemas para nuestros estudiantes latinas en esta comunidad. Soy optimista que continuaremos con nuestras clases de ESOL en escuelas, iglesias y otros servicios de la comunidad para ayudar mejor el inglés de nuestros estudiantes", dijo Ms. Erickson. "Como maestro de inglés en Clarke Central, veo la importancia inmensa de la enseñanza de leer y escribir cada día. Trato de enseñar a los estudiantes de los países extranjeros que la importancia aumenta cada día. Tal vez no sea justo, pero la sociedad nos juzga por nuestra manera de hablar y escribir", dijo Mr. Hill. Otro de los problemas que enfrentan los estudiantes latinos recién llagados a las escuelas es que algunas personas no sólo tienen que hacer frente al problema del idioma, sino que también tienen que trabajar para poder ganar dinero y así solventar sus gastos o ayudar a sus familias, no sólo en Estados Unidos, pero también en su país de origen. Lo importante es estudiar y aprender, tener metas y llegar a ser lo que en realidad se desea. El conocimiento es poder. Amigo latino, tú puedes mejorar tu futuro estudiando, sigue adelante y supérate. A petición de algunos alumnos de Clarke Central, damos las gracias a los maestros Mr. Hill, Ms. Ericsson, Mr. Hicks, Ms. Bougla, Ms. Kelly y Ms. Dolan por su apoyo a los estudiantes y familias latinas. Las personas involucradas en este proyecto son Lorena, Luis, Sodia y Dulce.		Letter to the Editor Studying is not easy Latino youths face various problems soon after arriving in the United States and going to school and study. It is very difficult to go to school and to try to have the rhythm of life of other students, to have good grades and to understand what is said to us in another language. This is different from what we have faced during many years back in our home countries. But thanks to programs such as ESOL, literature classes that help us to learn English and to the effort of teachers who are always willing to help, we can learn and continue working ahead. It is very important this kind of aid and also to know that teachers are concerned because it shows to new students that they have support. These are some opinions of students and teachers of Clarke Central High School: "Thanks to the aid of many teachers of this school I have been able to understand, to write and read in English, also helped my efforts and desire to do well," said Luis. "Studying and working is very difficult, but is worth while because I feel like I can carry out my goals. Besides, I am lucky of having teachers who speak English very clearly and are easy to understand," said Lorena. When teachers were asked how important is for them to help people who don't speak English, they said: "It's extremely important to me that people who do not know English learn to speak and write it. As a teacher, my goal is to help each student succeed in the United States or his home country, and the one skill that is fundamental to a student's future, is bilingualism. More important, bilingualism gives my students more choices about what kind of job they get," said Ms. Bolgla. "Learning to speak, read and write in English is critical to anyone living in the United States and around the world. As a teacher and a volunteer in the Athens community with Latinos, it is personally important to me that the Latino youth who come to this country get a good education. Many different Latinos come with a variety of personalities and levels. They also come from various backgrounds and households. All of these factors come to play a part their ability to become educated in English. I find it most helpful to learn and understand the big picture of the life of a Latino here in the United States before one can begin to educate them. Fortunately, I am able to communicate as necessary with those family members of my Latino students who do not speak English. This enables me to cut through barriers that otherwise could not be done. There have been great strides for our Latino students in this community. I am hopeful that we will continue though our ESOL classes at schools and at our churches and other community services to help better the English of our second learners, explained Ms. Erickson. "As an English teacher at Clarke Central, I see the huge importance of teaching reading and writing every day. Since I teach students from foreign countries, the importance is even more magnified. Regardless of whether it is fair or not, society judges us by our speaking and writing," said Mr. hill. Another of the problems that face Latino students recently arrived to schools is earning money while attending school. Some people do not only have to confront the problem of language, but also work and be able to earn money to pay for expenses or to help their families, not only here, but in their country of origin. The most important thing is to study and to learn, to have goals and become what we want. Knowledge makes you able to balance work and school. Latino students, you can improve your future by attending school and studying. At the request of some students of Clarke Central, we thank our teachers: Mr. Hill, Ms. Erickson, Mr. Hicks, Ms. Bolgla, Ms. Kelly for supporting Latino students and families.
