Secretaria de Estado pide a votantes que actualicen información

GALEO aplaude a la Secretaria de Estado Cathy Cox, miembro de GALEO, por su reciente iniciativa de actualizar la información racial/étnica de los votantes al contactar a los votantes registrados bajo "otro" en el registro electoral de Georgia.

La información fue enviada en septiembre y los votantes registrados quienes han sido clasificados como "otro" recibieron una postal donde pide a los votantes que actualicen su información racial y étnica. Las postales se enviaron para obtener información más exacta de datos demográficos de los votantes en Georgia.

Sin embargo, el regresar o no la información no afectará la situación del votante.

El envío de la información fue necesaria porque la solicitud de registro para votar cambió en el 2001 para así reflejar la creciente diversidad en Georgia e incluir las categorías de "Hispano/Latino" y "Asiático/Islas del Pacífico". Las categorías originales eran "Blanco", "Negro" y "Otro". Actualmente hay 21.613 votantes latinos registrados, 21.607 votantes asiáticos y 110.398 votantes bajo "otros".

Es importante recordar que GALEO llevó a cabo un análisis de votantes en junio del 2004. El estudio, patrocinado por la Asociación de Funcionarios Latinos Electos y Designados de Georgia (GALEO por sus siglas en inglés) y el Fondo Educacional de Funcionarios Latinos Electos y Designados, también indicó que hay alrededor de 40.000 votantes registrados latinos en Georgia quienes están actualmente erróneamente clasificados como "blanco" u "otro" debido al sistema de registro electoral previo al 2001 cuando no existían las categorías de "Latino/Hispano" en la sección racial/étnica. El estudio también analizó la base de datos de votantes registrados en Georgia, la cual reveló que a nivel estatal los votantes latinos registrados creció un 90 por ciento desde el 1 de enero del 2003 hasta el 2 de mayo del 2004. Cincuenta y un condados en Georgia vieron como el número de votantes hispanos crecía un 100 por cien durante esos 16 meses.

GALEO aplaude el importante esfuerzo en tiempo y recursos que la oficina de Secretaría de Estado ha tenido que realizar para tener una idea más clara del electorado en Georgia. "El envío de esta información por correo es el primer paso para tener una mejor idea del electorado en Georgia, el cual es muy diverso", dijo la Secretaria Cox. GALEO se ofrece a seguir trabajando con la Secretaria de Estado para ayudar a reclasificar a muchos latinos quienes actualmente están identificados como "blanco". GALEO calcula que, para el 18 de febrero del 2004, habían 27.717 votantes latinos quienes estaban clasificados como "blanco".

GALEO pide a todos los latinos y asiáticos que envíen la información necesaria a la oficina de la Secretaría de Estado para poder ser reclasificados. Además, GALEO pide que los latinos y asiáticos actualicen su grupo étnico si no están seguros de cómo fueron clasificados en el pasado. Los latinos y los asiáticos deberían registrarse otra vez para actualizar la base de datos a través de la socilicitud "Updating Racial/Ethnic Data". Cualquier votante registrado puede revisar su información, incluyendo clasificación racial/étnica, en internet en la página de la Oficina de Secretaría de Estado (www.sos.state.ga.us) usando el enlace "Poll Locator".

GALEO considera importante tener una lista precisa de los votantes en Georgia ya que los políticos determinan su plataforma política y los demógrafos analizarán la información de la participación de los votantes en las próximas elecciones a nivel estatal y nacional.

Secretary of State Asks "Other" Voters to Update Information

GALEO applauds Secretary of State Cathy Cox, a GALEO member, for the recent initiative to update voter racial/ethnic information by contacting all of the "Other" voters in the state voter registration database.

The mailing was completed on September and registered voters who have been indicated as "Other" will receive a postage paid post card in order for the "Other" voters to update their racial and ethnic data. The mailing was made in order to have a more accurate picture of the demographics of Georgia registered voters.

However, the return or non-return of these forms will not change a registered voters' status.

The mailing was necessary because voter registration forms were recently changed in 2001 to reflect the growing diversity in Georgia to include the categories of "Hispanic/Latino" and "Asian/Pacific Islander". The original categories were "White", "Black" and "Other". Currently there are 21,613 registered Latino voters, 21,607 Asian voters and 110,398 "Other" voters.

It is important to note that GALEO has conducted a voter analysis in June 2004. The report, sponsored by the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO) and the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Educational Fund, also indicated that there are likely more than 40,000 Georgia Latino registered voters who are currently misidentified as "white" or "other" due to pre-2001 voter registration cards lacking "Latino/Hispanic" as a racial/ethnic category. The report also analyzed the Georgia voter registration database revealed that statewide Latino voter registration grew by 90% from January 1, 2003 to May 2, 2004. Fifty-one Georgia counties saw Latino voter registration jump 100% during this 16-month timeframe.

GALEO applauds the significant investment of time and resources made by the Secretary of State's office in order to have a more accurate picture of Georgia's electorate. "This mailing is a first step in gaining a more accurate picture of the demographics of Georgia's diverse electorate," Secretary Cox said. GALEO appreciates further cooperation with the Secretary of State to assist in re-classifying many Latinos who are currently identified as "White". GALEO estimates there are 27,717 likely Latino voters classified as "White" as of February 18, 2004.

GALEO urges all Latinos and Asians to re-classify themselves if they receive one of these notices from the Secretary of State. Furthermore, GALEO urges Latinos and Asians to update their ethnicity if they are uncertain about how they may be classified. Latinos and Asians should re-register in order to update their ethnic data by indicating on the voter registration form "Updating Racial/Ethnic Data". A registered voter may check their current voter registration information, including their racial/ethnic classification online at the Secretary of State's website (www.sos.state.ga.us) by using the "Poll Locator".

GALEO believes it is important to have an accurate reflection of the state's registered voters as policy makers determine their platforms and demographers analyze the data for voter participation in the upcoming Presidential election from the state's voter registration lists.
