Casa Amistad: Nueva tienda y centro de servicios sociales

¡La unión hace la fuerza! Eso fue lo que pensaron los encargados de la tienda Doña Rosi y el centro de servicios sociales Casa de Amistad cuando decidieron unirse bajo un mismo techo.

El domingo, 12 de septiembre, se llevó a cabo la inauguración del local que albergará la tienda de decoraciones y regalos Doña Rosi y el centro de ayuda a hispanos, Casa de Amistad.

Terry Salguero es la directora del centro Casa de Amistad, el cual ofrece clases de computación, inglés básico, escritura, información sobre otros centros de ayuda en la comunidad y recursos legales, entre otros. "Queremos ayudar a la comunidad a superarse, a mejorar", explicó Salguero. "Todos son bienvenidos". El centro recibió la donación de seis computadoras por parte de la Agencia de Protección Medioambiental (EPA por sus siglas en inglés). Las clases serán impartidas por Salguero y otros voluntarios que trabajan en el centro.

El centro también albergará otros servicios para la comunidad como un almacén de ropa y alimentos, el cual se encuentra en la parte de atrás del local. "Nos gustaría que la comunidad nos ayudara a administrar este lugar y se involucrara más en este proyecto," admitió Salguero.

En la otra mitad del local se encuentra la tienda Doña Rosi con decoraciones y regalos para bodas, quinceaños, bautizos y pronto, pastelería. Rosalina Saucedo, conocida por todos en la comunidad como Doña Rosi, es la dueña de la tienda. Saucedo, original de Durango, México, ha vivido en Athens durante 12 años y estudió pastelería y decoración en Durango. "En México trabajé con familiares y amigos y cuando llegué a Estados Unidos decidí continuar", explica Saucedo. "Empecé trabajando en mi casa pero poco a poco emepecé a tener mucha clientela".

Entre las personas presentes en la ceremonia de inauguración se encontraba la alcaldesa de Athens Heidi Davison. "Conozco a Doña Rosi desde hace tiempo cuando tenía la otra tienda en la Jefferson Road", dijo Davison. "Recibí una invitación para esta ceremonia y decidí venir a probar sus excelentes pasteles".

Casa Amistad: New Store and Social Service Center

When people work together, they are able to accomplish bigger and better things. That's why Doña Rosi store and social services center Casa Amistad decided to work together under one roof.

On Sunday, September 12, the inauguration of the building took place, which will host both the gift and decoration Doña Rosi as well as the center for Hispanic help Casa Amistad.

Terry Salguero is the director of Casa Amistad, which offers computer classes, basic English, writing, information on other local resources centers and legal services, among other services. "We want to help the community to improve, to be better," Salguero explained. "Everybody is welcome." The center received a donation of six computers on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Salguero and other volunteers who work at the center will teach the classes.

The center will also offer other services to the community such as a warehouse with clothes and food, which will be located in the back of the building. "We'd like for the community to help us run this place and get more involved in this project", Salguero said.

On the other half of the building will be the store Doña Rosi with decorations and gifts for weddings, 'quinceaños' (fifteenth birthdays), and baptisms and soon, pastry. Rosalina Saucedo, known as Doña Rosi, is the storeowner. Saucedo, from Durango, Mexico, has lived in Athens for 12 years and studied pastry and decoration in Durango. "I worked with family and friends in Mexico and when I came to the United States I decided to continue," Saucedo explains. "I started working at home but little by little I started to have more clients."

Among the people present at the inaugural ceremony was Athens mayor Heidi Davison. "I met Doña Rosi a while ago when she had her other store at Jefferson Road," Davison said. "I received an invitation to this ceremony and I decided to come and try her excellent cakes.'
