Café Cuba: comida con sabor criollo

Una de la cosas que más extrañamos cuando viajamos más allá de nuestras fronteras es la comida de nuestros países. No podemos evitar comparar el sabor, olor y la presentación de la comida. ¿Cuántos de nosotros no hemos dicho en algún momento "la comida de mi mamá (o abuela) sabe mejor"?

Para aquellos que añoran la comida típica de Colombia o Cuba, hay un nuevo restaurante en Athens que se especializa en platos típicos de estos dos países.

Café Cuba abrió sus puertas en agosto de este año en la Avenida Prince. Beatriz Cossio, propietaria del local, tuvo la idea del restaurante en 1.999 pero no fue hasta hace unos tres meses que finalmente su sueño se hizo realidad. "Hacia varios años que se me ocurrió la idea pero tuve que esperar por un buen local y una buena ubicación", dice Beatriz, original de Cali, Colombia.

El nombre de Café Cuba proviene del esposo de Beatriz, Doctor Carlos Cossio, quien nació en Cuba y emigró a los Estados Unidos a temprana edad junto a sus padres. De ahí que el restaurante ofrezca comida típica cubaba y colombiana. "Decidimos llamarlo Café Cuba porque la comida cubana es más conocida que la colombiana", admite Beatriz.

Los dos platos más exisotos entre los clientes hasta ahora han sido la Bandeja Paisa y el Sandwich Cubano. La bandeja paisa está compuesta de huevos, arroz, carne, frijoles, plátano maduro, chorizo y arepa. Por su parte, el sandwich cubano tiene carne de cerdo, jamón, queso suizo y pepinillos. "Tenemos dos cocineros, los dos son cubanos", explica Beatriz. "Yo también cocino y me encargo de los platos colombianos, aunque Adalberto y Rafael (cocineros cubanos) también están aprendiendo a cocinar comida colombiana".

Beatriz cuenta con la ayuda de su familia para operar el local. "Mis hijos, hermanos y mamá me ayudan en el restaurante", dice Beatriz, quien lleva 11 años viviendo en Athens.

Café Cuba: food with native flavor

One of the things we miss the most when we travel abroad is food from our countries of origin. We can't help to compare the flavor, smell and presentation of the food. How many of us have said at some point, "my mom's (or grandma's) food tastes better?"

For those who yearn for typical Colombian and Cuban food, there is a new restaurant in Athens that specializes in dishes from these two countries.

Café Cuba opened its doors in August of this year on Prince Avenue. Beatriz Cossio, restaurant owner, had the idea of opening a restaurant back in 1999, but it wasn't until three months ago that her dream came true. "It had been several years since I had the idea, but I had to wait for the right building and location," Beatriz said, who is from Cali, Colombia.

The name Café Cuba came from her husband, Doctor Carlos Cossio, who was born in Cuba and moved to the United States at young age along with his parents. That's why the restaurant offers typical Cuban and Colombian food. "We decided to call it (the restaurant) Café Cuba because the Cuban food is better known internationally than Colombian food," Beatriz admits.

The two most successful dishes among visitors at the restaurant are "Bandeja Paisa" and the Cuban Sandwich. The "Bandeja Paisa" is made of eggs, rice, meat, beans, ripe plantain, sausage, and 'arepa'. On the other hand, the Cuban Sandwich has pork meat, ham, Swiss cheese, and small cucumbers. "We have two cooks, both of them Cuban," Beatriz explains. "I also cook and prepare the Colombian dishes, but Adalberto and Rafael (Cuban cooks) are also learning to cook Colombian food."

Beatriz gets help from her family to run the business. "Mi children, bothers and mom help me with the restaurant," said Beatriz, who has been living in Athens for 11 years.
