Por el amor a la tapicería

Todos tenemos sueños. Sueños de hacer realidad nuestras metas y hacer algo que nos gusta. Para algunos, puede ser cocinar, viajar, convertirse en un astronauta o tal vez sólo tener una casa en las montañas. Pero para Luís Rodríguez, su sueño fue tener su propia tienda de tapicería.

Rodríguez llegó a El Paso, Texas hace 15 años proveniente de México. En su lugar natal de Ciudad Juárez, Estado de Chihuahua, Rodríguez tenía una tapicería. Le ofrecieron un trabajo en el otro lado de la frontera en El Paso en otra tapicería pero esta vez como maestro, ayudando a jóvenes quienes también estaban interesados en comenzar una carrera en el negocio.

Después de cuatro años enseñando a otros, Rodríguez se mudó a Athens donde ya vivían algunos familiares. Rodríguez encontró trabajo en una incubadora local donde trabajó durante casi cinco años, pero siempre siguió pensando en lo que realmente le gustaba hacer. Es por eso que buscó trabajo en una tapicería pero esta estaba ubicada en Chamblee, Ga. a unos 90 kilómetros al oeste de Athens. El tenía que manejar cada día entre las dos ciudades durante más de dos horas para poder ir a trabajar y hacer lo que realmente le gusta. Pero después de seis meses manejando ida y vuelta, cinco veces a la semana, Rodriguez se cansó, decidió que era demasiado y regresó a trabajar a la incubadora.

Rodríguez no dejó la tapicería por completo. Sus amigos sabían lo mucho que le gustaba y lo bueno que era haciéndolo. "Mis amigos solían pasar por mi casa y me pedían que les diera un presupuesto y también que les arreglara cosas pero era muy difícil trabajar en casa", dijo Rodríguez. "Poco a poco comencé a comprar herramientas".

Un día, un amigo suyo, Armando Domínguez, dueño del restaurante Taquería Mi Tierra en el Mercado de la Pulga de Athens, le sugirió que hablara con el dueño de un taller mecánico en Danielsville Road en Athens. "Comencé trabajando con asientos e interiores", dijo Rodríguez. "El dueño del taller me ayudó a conseguir contactos y me ofreció que alquilara un lugar al lado del taller donde tanía más espacio y podía trabajar, no sólo con autos, pero también con muebles".

Actualmente, Rodríguez dedica todo su tiempo a su negocio, el cual tiene muchos clientes. La mayor parte del tiempo la pasa trabajando en el diseño interior de los autos pero también arregla sofás, butacas y otros muebles que necesitan verse como nuevos. "La mayoría de mis clientes son hispanos y afroamericanos que quieren que les cambie el interior de sus autos", dijo Rodriguez. "Casi siempre tardo una semana en rehacer completamente el interior de un auto".

Rodríguez recibe mucha ayuda de su hijo, Carlos, quien ha trabajado en la tienda desde que abrió sus puertas hace cuatro años. "Ayudo atendiendo a los clientes que hablan inglés y también recojo y dejo los muebles", dice Carlos, quien tiene 20 años. "Me gusta mucho trabajar con tapicería".

For the Love of Upholstery

Everybody has dreams. Dreams of achieving goals and doing something they love. For some, it might be cooking, traveling, becoming an astronaut or maybe just having a house in the countryside. But for Luis Rodriguez it was having his own upholstery business.

Rodriguez arrived in El Paso, Texas 15 years ago from Mexico. Back in his hometown of Ciudad Juarez, State of Chihuahua, Rodriguez had an upholstery store. He was offered a job across the border in El Paso in another upholstery store, but this time as a teacher, helping training younger guys who were also interested in starting a career in the business.

After four years teaching others, Rodriguez moved to Athens where he already had some relatives living in. Rodriguez found at job at a local egg incubator where he worked for nearly five years, but he always had his real love on the back of his mind. That's why he applied and got a job at an upholstery store, but it was located in Chamblee, Ga. some 60 miles west of Athens. He had to commute everyday between the two cities and drive more than two hours in order to go to work and do what he really loves. But after six months driving back and forth, five times a week, Rodriguez got tired of it, decided it was taking too much out of him and he then returned to the incubator.

He didn't stop the upholstery completely. His friends knew how much he liked it and how good he was at it. "My friends used to stop by my house and asked me to give them an estimate and also to fix and work on things, but it was hard working at home," said Rodriguez. "Little by little I started buying some tools I needed to work."

One day, a friend of his, Armando Dominguez, owner of the restaurant Taqueria Mi Tierra at the Flea Market in Athens, recommended Rodriguez to talk with the owner of a body shop on Danielsville Road in Athens. "I started working on car seats and interiors," said Rodriguez. "The store owner helped me to get contacts and then offered me to rent a space next door where I could work more freely, not only on car interiors, but also on furniture."

Currently, Rodriguez dedicates all his time to his store and has plenty of work. He mostly works on car interiors, but he also does sofas, recliners, and other furniture that need a new look. "My clients are mostly Hispanics and African-Americans who want their car interiors renew," said Rodriguez. "It usually takes me a week to completely renew a car interior."

Rodriguez gets a lot of help from his son, Carlos, who has been working at the store since it opened nearly four years ago. "I helped by attending the English-speaking customers as well as picking-up and dropping-off furniture," said Carlos, 20. "I really enjoy working in upholstery."
