Ellen Ochoa, astronauta de NASA, en Athens

Varias muchachas latinas disfrutaron de una fabulosa tarde durante la cena para recaudar fondos para la Fundación Jeannette Rankin con la invitada Ellen Ochoa, una astronauta de NASA. Veinticinco jóvenes y estusiasmadas latinas de Athens pudieron escuchar la historia personal de la Dr. Ochoa, gracias a la generosidad de muchos grupos e individuos quienes se ofrecieron a patrocinarlas con una entrada.

Las jóvenes también tuvieron la oportunidad de disfrutar después de la presentación, tomándose fotos con la Dr. Ochoa, quien fue muy amable y simpática con todas las personas quienes se acercaban para hablar con ella y una verdadera modelo a seguir por la manera como perseveró durante su vida para convertir sus sueños en realidad.

Gracias a la generosidad de Jean Friedman y Burnadette Musetti, quienes ofrecieron las primeras entradas y animaron a otros a hacer lo mismo, varias muchachas latinas de Athens tuvieron la oportunidad de asistir al evento. Otros patrocinantes fueron: Dr. Rosanna Masciardi, Charles Ostick, Agencia de Protección Medioambiental, la cual donó seis entradas, Presbyterian Hispanic Ministry Team, Centro Católico, Athens-Oconee Jr. Women's Club y Nancy Lindbloom, todos ofrecieron entradas. La Hermana Margarita Martin, María Labrador y José Torres también ofrecieron ayuda durante el evento.

Las jóvenes latinas estuvieron bien representadas. Jackelyn Bosby, quien coordina el club UNIDOS en la Escuela Secundaria Clarke Central, también obtuvo patrocinadores para un grupo de nueve muchachas. El evento también contó con la presencia de un grupo de jóvenes latinas de la Girl Scouts de Carolina del Norte. En total asistieron al evento más de 40 estudiantes latinas. Los presentes también tuvieron el placer de conocer a Mimi Woodson y su hija. Woodson es una concejal en la ciudad de Columbus, Georgia y fue la primera persona de origen latino en ser elegida para un puesto gubernamental en la historia de Georgia. Las jóvenes también tuvieron un caluroso recibimiento por parte de las mujeres representando a la fundación y muchas admitieron estar contentas de ver a las muchachas en el evento y las animaron a seguir adelante. Fue una fabulosa tarde y se logró sembrar muchas semillas, las cualas darán sus frutos en el futuro de estas jóvenes latinas, gracias en parte a todas las personas que lo hicieron posible.

La Fundación Jeannette Rankin ofrece becas escolares a mujeres de bajos recursos y es llamada así en honor a la primera mujer elegida al Congreso de los Estados Unidos, Jeannette Rankin. Durante el evento, 56 mujeres recibieron las becas del 2004. La Cámara de Comercio de Athens ofreció un premio en honor a la Dr. Ochoa, el cual fue entregado por el presentador de la noche, Eduardo Noriega.

Several Latina girls had a wonderful evening at the Jeannette Rankin Foundation fund-raising dinner with speaker Ellen Ochoa, a NASA astronaut. Twenty-five very excited young Latina women from Athens were able to hear Dr. Ochoa's inspiring story, thanks to the generosity of many groups and individuals who came forth to sponsor them with a ticket.

The young women also had a great time afterwards taking pictures with Dr. Ochoa. She was incredibly warm and personable to each person who spoke with her and a true role model for all in the way she persevered to reach her dreams.

Thanks to the generosity of Jean Friedman and Burnadette Musetti, who provided the first tickets and got the ball rolling, local Latina girls had the opportunity to attend the event. Other sponsors were: Dr. Rosanna Masciadri, Charles Ostick, Environmental Protection Agency, which donated six tickets, Presbyterian Hispanic Ministry Team, Catholic Center, Athens-Oconee Jr. Women's Club, and Nancy Lindbloom, all provided tickets. Sister Margarita Martin, Maria Labrador and Jose Torres also offered their help at the event.

The young Latina women were well represented. Jackelyn Bosby, who coordinates the club UNIDOS at Clarke Central High School, also found a sponsor for her group bringing nine more young ladies. There was also another small group of Latina students who came from the Girl Scouts in North Carolina. In all, there were over 40 Latina high and middle school students in attendance. People present also had the pleasure of being joined by Mimi Woodson and her daughter. Ms. Woodson is a City Council woman from Columbus, GA. and was the first elected Latino official in Georgia history. They also got a very warm reception from the women who were with the foundation and many said how glad they were to have the young women there and gave them many encouraging words. It was an outstanding evening and many good seeds were planted that will bear fruit later in these young lives, thanks in part to everybody who made it possible.

The Jeannette Rankin Foundation gives educational grants to low-income women, and is named to honor the legacy of the first woman elected to U.S. Congress, Jeannette Rankin. During the event, 56 women were announced as 2004 grant recipients. The Athens Area Chamber of Commerce gave an award to honor Dr. Ochoa, and Dinner Host Chair Eduardo Noriega presented the award.
