Política Cerca de 45.000 latinos residentes legales en Georgia son elegibles para ciudadanía Cuando los Estados Unidos ha decidido aumentar el precio para realizar el trámite para solicitar la ciudadanía, existen alrededor de 45.000 latinos residentes legales en Georgia, los cuales son elegibles para convertirse en ciudadnos estadounidenses, según un estudio realizado por el Fondo Educacional de la Asociación Nacional de Latinos y Representantes Electos (NALEO por sus siglas en inglés) dirigido por el demógrafo Dr. Jeffrey Passel del Urban Institute. Estos números revelan que más de un tercio (37 por ciento) de los residentes lagales en Georgia elegibles para la ciudadanía son latinos, alrededor de 44.000. Recientemente se aprovó un aumento del precio del trámite para solicitar la ciudadanía, de $310 a $390. Según Sam Zamarripa, Senador de Georgia y miembro de la Asociación de Representantes Latinos Electos de Georgia (GALEO por sus siglas en inglés), "los residentes latinos permanentes elegibles para solicitar la ciudadanía represntan 44.000 serios nuevos candidatos para participar en el proceso electoral de Georgia. Si queremos que nuestra democracia sea en realidad representativa, debemos promever la naturalización y eliminar las barreras". Politics Nearly 45,000 Georgia Latino Legal Permanent Residents Eligible for Citizenship At a time when the United States just raised the price tag for United States citizenship, there are nearly 45,000 Georgia Latino legal permanent residents who today are eligible to become full U.S. citizens, according to a National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund analysis of estimates produced by Urban Institute demographer Dr. Jeffrey Passel. These estimates reveal that over one-third (37 per cent) of the state's legal permanent residents eligible for U.S. citizenship are Latino, about 44,000. Effective now, many immigrant application fees will increase dramatically, including a hike that will raise the cost of naturalization from $310 to $390. According to the Honorable Sam Zamarripa, Georgia State Senator and Co-Chair of the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials, "Latino legal permanent residents eligible for U.S. citizenship represent 44,000 potential new participants in our state's electoral process. If we want our democracy to remain truly representative, promoting naturalization and eliminating barriers in the process must become a national priority." According to the NALEO Educational Fund's analysis, most of the eligible Latino legal permanent residents are in states that are traditional Latino population centers, about 77 per cent of the nation's total live in California, Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey or Arizona. However, as indicated in the table, there are also a significant number in regions with emerging Latino communities, including Georgia, the Northeast (Massachusetts), the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area (Maryland and Virginia), and the Midwest (Michigan and Ohio).
