Lugares para pasar el fin de semana

Es fin de semana, la familia se reúne para pasar tiempo juntos, disfrutar y relajarse. ¿A dónde ir? ¿Qué hacer? Y por supuesto, sin gastar mucho dinero.

"A este parque puedes venir a volar tu cometa, no hay cables, puedo correr y correr y mi cometa vuela libre", comentó Javier Osuna, un estudiante de tercer año de primaria, quien en compañía de su familia pasaba un feliz domingo en el parque Sandy Creek de Athens.

Athens ofrece varias opciones para disfrutar un día familiar sin gastar mucho dinero. Entre las opciones están las diferentes actividades que ofrecen el Parque Sandy Creek y el Centro Natural de Sandy Creek.

En el primero, a un costo de dos dólares por persona, se tiene acceso a un hermoso parque de 1.782 acres con más de seis millas de veredas para caminar, seis millas para montar a caballo, un lago (Cecil B. Chapman) donde se puede pescar o nadar en el verano y mesas para disfrutar de una deliciosa comida entre el canto de los pájaros y el aroma del pasto recién cortado. El parque también cuenta con un cancha de voleibol y se puede acampar por una cantidad adicional.

"A los niños los cansamos primero", dijo Susana Flores, en referencia a los diferentes caminos a seguir entre los árboles que llevan a las áreas con mesas o al lago. "Cuando se cansan, les da hambre o sed y vienen corriendo a la mesa, entonces sí, ya podemos comer todos juntos", puntualizó sonriente Flores.

Los domingos, este hermoso espacio abierto, se llena de niños que corriendo recorren las áreas verdes y conviven con sus familias y con los otros asistentes mientras sus padres asan carne o simplemente toman refrescos frente a la pequeña playa. Es importante recordar que está prohibido introducir bebidas alcohólicas al parque.

Por su parte, la entrada al CentroNatural de Sandy Creek es gratis. Entre las múltiples actividades que se llevan a cabo en este hermoso lugar, el cual está conectado al 'North Oconee River Greenway' (un circuito para ciclistas compartido por patinadores y corredores), destaca la presentación de diferentes aves los sábados de 1 a 4 de la tarde y sólo es necesario llevar tu propia comida. Además, es un lugar muy frecuentado por las personas que gustan de caminar o correr en un lugar protegido del tráfico vehicular.

Parque Infantil

El parque de juegos infantiles más grande de Georgia abrirá sus puertas la última semana de abril. Se llama "World Of Wonder" (WOW) y está ubicado en la Whit Davis Road en el 'Southeast Clarke Park'. Este parque lleno de color y juegos cuenta con estacionamiento, baños y un enorme fuerte en donde se ubican los diversos juegos infantiles.

Para su construcción, se utilizaron 48 mil dólares provenientes de los fondos del gobierno (SPLOST) y 250 mil dólares recaudados por WOW gracias a las donaciones personales y de negocios locales. Pero no fue sólo dinero lo que hizo posible este paraíso infantil, una parte importante fue la participación de la comunidad, voluntarios de todos los niveles sociales donaron su tiempo en la construcción.

Gracias a la comunidad de Athens y a un tenaz grupo de voluntarios, WOW recaudó los fondos necesarios para que en conjunto con la donación gubernamental fuera posible convertir un sueño en realidad, este parque de entrada gratuita ofrece otra opción de esparcimiento a las familias locales.

Parque Sandy Creek: 400 Bob Holman Road. Abierto de martes a domingo de 7 a.m. a 9 p.m. durante los meses de verano. El horario cambia en invierno.

El Centro Natural Sandy Creek se encuentra en el Highway 441 (Commerce Road), justo después de pasar el Highway 29.

Places to Pass the Weekends

It's the weekend, the family gets together to spend time with one another, have fun, and relax. Where to go? What to do? And of course, without having to spend a lot of money.

"You can come fly your kite at this park, there are no cables, I can run and run and my kite flies freely," commented Javier Osuna, a third-grade student in elementary school, who enjoyed his Sunday in the company of his family at the Sandy Creek Park in Athens.

Athens offers several options to enjoy a family day without spending much money. Among the options are the different activities that Sandy Creek Park and the Sandy Creek Nature Center offer.

First of all, for a cost of two dollars per person, there is access to a beautiful park of 1.782 acres with more than six miles of trails to walk, six miles to horse-ride, a lake (Cecil B. Chapman) where one can fish or swim in the summer and tables to enjoy a delicious meal among the birds' singing and the aroma of fresh cut grass. The park also has a volleyball court and camping is allowed for an additional charge.

"We get the kids tired first," said Susana Flores, in reference to the different trails in the woods to follow that lead to areas with tables or to the lake. "When they get tired, they're hungry or thirsty and they come running to the table, and then we can all eat together," specified Flores, smiling.

On Sundays, this beautiful open space is filled with running kids that explore the green areas and socialize with their families or with the other people while their parents grill meat or simply drink soda in front of the small beach. It is important to remember that bringing alcoholic beverages to the park is prohibited.

Admission to the Sandy Creek Nature Center is free. Among the multiple activities that take place at this beautiful location, which is connected to the North Oconee River Greenway (a track for cyclists, skaters, and runners), there is a presentation of different birds on Saturdays from 1 to 4 in the afternoon and the only necessary thing is to bring your own food. In addition, it is frequented by those who like to walk or run in an area protected from vehicular traffic.

Playground

The biggest playground in Georgia will open its doors the last week of April. It is called the "World of Wonder" (WOW) and is located on Whit Davis Road in the Southeast Clarke Park. This park full of color and games has parking, bathrooms, and a huge fort containing diverse games.

For its construction, 48 thousand dollars from government funds (SPLOST) were used and 250 thousand dollars were collected by WOW from donations from people and businesses. But not only did money make this child paradise possible, an important part was the community participation, volunteers from all social levels gave their time for the construction.

Thanks to the Athens community and a tenacious group of volunteers, WOW collected the necessary funds so that, together with the government money, it was possible to make this dream come true. The admission is free, offering families another place for amusement.
