Españolas llegan a la final de torneo de tenis

Las españolas Conchita Martinez en individuales y Virginia Ruano Pascual en dobles demostraron en Charleston, Carolina del Sur que son favoritas para adjudicarse el prestigioso torneo de Grand Slam en arcilla, Roland Garros.

Martinez llegó a la final del torneo 'Family Circle Cup' disputado en la preciosa ciudad costera de Charleston. Con un cielo despejado y ante unos 8.000 espectadores, Martinez, número 25 en la clasificación de la WTA (Women Tennis Association por sus siglas en inglés) no pudo superar a la número 16, la estadounidense Venus Williams. Martinez se adjudicó el primer set con un marcador de 6-2 aprovechando que Williams tardó en meterse en el partido y cometió muchos errores no forzados. Pero en el segundo set Williams comenzó a imponer su juego fuerte y dominador desde el fondo de la cancha y comenzó a subir más a la red cuando la oportunidad lo permitía. De este manera Williams ganó el segundo set 6-2. En el tercer y definitivo set, Williams no se relajó y continuó imponiendo su juego ganando los siguientes cinco juegos antes de que Martinez pudiera lograr el juego de la honra. Al final Williams se impuso 6-1.

Este es el primer torneo que Williams se adjudica después de 14 meses de sequía debido principalmente a lesiones. A pesar de la derrota, Martinez demostró que se encuentra en buena forma en este principio de temporada de torneos en arcilla y con miras al Abierto Francés a disputarse en París del 24 de mayo al 6 de junio. "En estos momentos creo que la belga Justine Henin-Hardenne es la jugadora a batir en arcilla", dijo Martinez, quien llegó a la final del torneo parisino en el 2000.

Un día antes, en las semifinales, Martinez se impuso a la suiza Patty Schnyder por 6-4 y 6-3. Hubo polémica cuando Schnyder se negó a darle la mano y felicitar a Martinez al final del encuentro. "No sé cuál es su problema, se lo pregunté pero no me contestó", dijo Martinez durante la rueda de prensa. "Nunca antes nadie se había negado a darme la mano", añadió la jugadora de 32 años de edad y con 16 años de experiencia en el circuito profesional.

En dobles, Ruano Pascual hizo pareja con la argentina Paola Suarez para alzar el trofeo. Las hispanas, clasificadas número uno en la clasificación mundial, se impusieron al duo compuesto por las estadounidenses Lisa Raymond y Martina Navratilova, número seis del mundo, en dos sets, 6-4 6-1. Ruano Pascual y Suarez, quienes haciendo pareja han logrado conquistar cinco torneos de Grand Slam y eran las defensoras del título logrado en Charleston el año pasado, también demostraron con esta victoria que son el equipo a batir en el Abierto Francés, ganado por ellas en el 2001 y 2002. Por su parte, la veterana de 47 años, Navratilova, dijo a los presentes al finalizar el partido que regresaría el año que viene pero como espectadora.

Spaniards in Tennis Tournament Finals

Spaniards Conchita Martinez in individuals and Virginia Ruano Pascual in doubles proved in Charleston, South Carolina, that they are favorites as the winners of the prestigious Grand Slam tournament on red clay, Roland Garros.

Martinez made it to the finals of the Family Circle Cup tournament played in the beautiful coastal city of Charleston. With a clear sky and in front of some 8,000 spectators, Martinez, classified as number 25 in the WTA (Women Tennis Association), could not beat number 16, American Venus Williams. Martinez won the first set with a score of 6-2, taking advantage of Williams' lateness in getting into the game and her many careless errors. But in the second set Williams started to strengthen her game and dominating from the baseline and started to come to the net when she had the chance. This was how Williams won the second set 6-2. In the third and definitive set, Williams did not relax and continued to strengthen her game, winning the next five games before Martinez won her only game. At the end, Williams won 6-1.

This is the first tournament that Williams has won after 14 months of rest due mainly to injuries. Despite the loss, Martinez proved that she was in good shape during this beginning part of the clay tournament season and looking forward to the French Open in Paris from May 24th to June 6th. "Right now I think the player to beat on clay is Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne," said Martinez, who made it to the finals of the tournament in Paris in 2000.

One day earlier, Martinez defeated Swiss Patty Schnyder 6-4 and 6-3. There was a scandal when Schnyder refused to shake hands and congratulate Martinez at the end of the match. "I don't know what her problem is, I asked her but she didn't answer me," said Martinez during the press conference. "No one has ever refused to shake hands with me," added the player, who is 32 years old and has 16 years of experience in the professional circuit.

In doubles, Ruano Pascual joined forces with Argentinean Paola Suarez to win the trophy. The Hispanics, classified as number one in the world rank, defeated the American duo of Lisa Raymond and Martina Navratilova, number six in the world, in two sets, 6-4 and 6-1. Ruano Pascual Suarez, who as a pair have conquered five Grand Slam tournaments and defended the title won in Charleston last year, also proved that with this victory they are the team to beat in the French Open, won by them in 2001 and 2002. On the other hand, veteran of 47 years, Navratilova, told those present that she would return next year as a spectator.
