Supermercado el Sur, una nueva alternativa en Athens

El 1 de marzo del 2004 abrió sus puertas el Supermercado el Sur. Ubicado en el 3077 Danielsville Road, este establecimiento latino ofrece una gran variedad de productos y servicios a la comunidad de Athens y ciudades vecinas. Athens cuenta con una nueva alternativa para realizar las compras de artículos del hogar.

Sus fundadores, Lázaro Torres y Juan Galarza, quienes también son cuñados, decidieron crear el supermercado para brindar a los habitantes de esa zona la comodidad de adquirir productos de primera necesidad sin tener que viajar muy lejos. "En esta área viven bastantes latinos y por eso decidimos establecer nuestro negocio en este local", explica Torres. Unos de los vecindarios en Athens con más residentes latinos es Pinewood Estates ubicado en la carretera Highway 29, cerca del Supermercado el Sur.

Torres y Galarza ya tienen experiencia en negocios. Fueron los fundadores de los restaurantes mexicanos en Athens, Tierra Caliente y Río Balsa. Pero decidieron establecer una tienda de suministros con verduras frescas, legumbres, abarrotes, bebidas no alcohólicas, tarjetas telefónicas, productos de toda Centroamérica, CD's, DVD's, música y artículos en general. También tienen pensado abrir, muy pronto, una carnicería para ofrecer las mejores carnes y aves.

En el Supermercado el Sur los clientes son atendidos en español e inglés por sus propios dueños ya que Torres y Galarza quieren ofrecer sus servicios al público en general.

Torres explica que el supermercado es comúnmente conocido simplemente como 'el sur'. "Cuando alguien va a su país de origen, especialmente México, dice que va al sur". Es común entre los latinoamericanos referirse a los Estados Unidos como "el norte".

Torres y Galarza llegaron a Athens en 1991. En aquel entonces, explican, habían pocos latinos viviendo en Athens pero ahora hay muchos más, especialmente en los alrededores de Danielsville Road donde se encuentran varios vecindarios de casas móviles. "Es increíble como ha crecido la población latina en Athens. Cuando llegamos, éramos aproximadamente 20 familias y todos nos conocíamos y cada vez que nos veíamos en la calle nos saludábamos ya que era bien difícil conseguir a un latino", dice Galarza.

Torres y Galarza se enorgullecen en decir que su tienda tiene los precios más bajos de la ciudad y la mejor calidad. "Hemos notado que algunas de las tiendas latinas de Athens tienen precios bien elevados y esto está haciendo que muchos de los latinos compren en los hipermercados como Walmart. No queremos competir con las otras tiendas latinas pero, sí queremos que los hispanos vengan a nuestro negocio a hacer sus compras en vez de ir a Walmart y es por eso que le ofrecemos bajos precios y la mejor calidad en español".

El Sur Supermarket, a New Alternative in Athens

On March 1, 2004, the El Sur Supermarket opened its doors. Located on 3077 Danielsville Road, this Latino establishment offers a great variety of products and services to the Athens community and neighboring cities. Athens now has a new alternative for shopping for products for the home.

Its founders, Lázaro Torres and Juan Galarza, who are also brother-in-laws, decided to open the supermarket to offer those who lived in the area the commodity of acquiring needed products without having to travel very far. "In this area there are quite a few Latinos and that's why we decided to establish our business in this location," explains Torres. One of the neighborhoods in Athens with the most Latino residents is Pinewood Estates, located off of Highway 29, close to the El Sur Supermarket.

Torres and Galarza already have business experience. They were the founders of two Mexican restaurants in Athens, Tierra Caliente and Río Balsa. But they decided to establish a supply store with fresh vegetables, groceries, non-alcoholic drinks, phone cards, products from all-over Central America, CDs, DVDs, music, and general items. They are also planning on opening a butcher shop very soon, offering the best meat.

At the El Sur Supermarket the clients are assisted in Spanish and English, since Torres and Galarza want to offer their services to the public in general. Torres explains that the supermarket is commonly known just as El Sur. "When somebody goes to their home country, especially to Mexico, they say they are going "al sur" (or down south)." Latin Americans commonly refer to the United States as 'el norte' (or the North). Torres and Galarza arrived in Athens in 1991. Back then, they explain, there few only a few Latinos living in Athens but now there are many more, especially around Danielsville Road, where there are many mobile home neighborhoods. "It's incredible to see how much the Latino population in Athens has grown. When we arrived, there were approximately 20 families and we all knew each other, and every time we ran into each other in the street we would greet each other since it was so rare to see another Latino," says Galarza. Torres and Galarza take pride in saying that their store has the lowest prices and the best quality in the city. "We have noticed that some of the Latino stores in Athens have really high prices and this is causing many Latinos to shop at Wal-Mart instead. We don't want to compete with the other Latino stores, but we do want Hispanics to come to our store for their shopping rather than going to Wal-Mart, so we offer low prices and the best quality, all in Spanish."
