La pasión y sus abusos

Tan solo unas horas después de que se estrenara en Estados Unidos la controversial película La Pasión de Cristo, la Conferencia Nacional de Obispos Católicos dio a conocer su informe sobre los abusos sexuales de sus sacerdotes en Estados Unidos. Y lo realmente sorprendente es que la película de dos horas y siete minutos de Mel Gibson haya llamado más la atención que el medio siglo de abusos y crímenes cometidos por religiosos católicos contra menores de edad.

Al final de cuentas, La Pasión de Cristo es solamente una película y, como tal, está cargada de ficción, interpretaciones y prejuicios de su director. Mel Gibson puso 25 millones de dólares de su bolsillo para hacer la película y, aunque algunos lo acusen de antisemita, ha presentado su propia visión de las últimas horas de Jesucristo. Hay gente que ha salido horrorizada del cine. Las escenas de violencia y tortura son sumamente dramáticas. Pero es sólo una película y nada más. En cambio, la investigación realizada por el Colegio John Jay de Justicia Criminal es real y pinta un escalofriante panorama de abuso, negligencia y complicidad dentro de la iglesia católica norteamericana.

Estos son los datos. De 1950 a la fecha 4.392 sacerdotes católicos abusaron sexualmente de, por lo menos, 10.667 niños. Es decir, el cuatro por ciento de los 109 mil sacerdotes que ha ordenado la iglesia católica de Estados Unidos eran unos criminales. Pero el problema es que la mayoría de estos sacerdotes criminales no fueron acusados formalmente, juzgados y, mucho menos, encarcelados. Hay más: casi todos estos abusadores sexuales están en estos momentos en libertad.

Dos de cada tres de las víctimas fueron abusadas más de una vez. ¿Cómo? En muchos casos bajo los efectos del alcohol y en las casas de la parroquia donde oficiaban los padres. Estos sacerdotes tenían una clarísima predisposición homosexual ya que ocho de cada 10 de las víctimas eran niños menores de 18 años de edad. Es preciso resaltar esto ya que los homosexuales no son aceptados oficialmente dentro de la iglesia católica.

El presidente de la Conferencia Nacional de Obispos Católicos, Wilton Gregory, asegura que en estos momentos ninguno de los sacerdotes involucrados en abuso sexual está oficiando misa o trabajando en colegios y seminarios. Es cierto; bajo la nueva política de "cero tolerancia" cientos de abusadores sexuales han sido expulsados de la iglesia. Pero el asunto está muy lejos de estar resuelto. El obispo Gregory se niega a dar la lista con los nombres de esos sacerdotes. Tampoco sabemos dónde viven ni a qué se dedican. ¿Cómo puede estar la iglesia tan segura de que estos criminales no volverán a atacar de nuevo a menores de edad? Con sotana o sin sotana, son peligrosos.

Uno de los elementos más preocupantes de este reporte es que obispos, cardenales y, quizás, hasta el mismo Vaticano encubrieron a los sacerdotes criminales.

Preguntas: ¿A partir de qué momento se enteró el papa Juan Pablo II de estos abusos? ¿Qué hizo para detenerlos? El reporte, tristemente, no incluye ni una sola palabra al respecto.

Como latinoamericano, otra de las cosas que me preocupa y mucho es que la iglesia católica de América Latina haya intentado presentar todo esto como un "problema norteamericano" para limpiarse las manos. Sin embargo, basándome en las llamadas y correos electrónicos que he recibido desde que los primeros abusos fueron reportados por el diario The Boston Globe, es muy probable que este no sea únicamente un "problema norteamericano" y esté extendido también en otras partes del mundo.

Es muy difícil en América Latina cuestionar a la iglesia católica. Tiene un peso e influencia mucho mayor que en Estados Unidos y la prensa lo piensa tres veces antes de lanzar un ataque contra un sacerdote. Además, por esa misma autoridad es más fácil que oculten algún delito. Pero es preciso exigir en cada uno de nuestros países una investigación similar a la que se ordenó en Estados Unidos. Si el cuatro por ciento de los sacerdotes estadounidenses han sido abusadores sexuales de niños, estadísticamente existe la posibilidad de que en América Latina nos encontremos porcentajes similares. Después de todo, las condiciones en que se ha dado el abuso sexual y la complicidad de las autoridades eclesiásticas saltan las fronteras y las barreras geográficas.

El problema dentro de la iglesia en Estados Unidos, supuestamente, se ha limpiado. Pero en América Latina es posible que sacerdotes delincuentes, abusadores de menores de edad, se encuentren hoy en importantes posiciones de poder en iglesias, escuelas y seminarios. No denunciarlo es ser cómplice del crimen. Urge, insisto, una investigación sobre el abuso sexual a menores entre sacerdotes latinoamericanos.

La Pasión de Mel Gibson me tiene totalmente sin cuidado. No me preocupan personajes formados en la imaginación de un actor australiano sino seres humanos de carne y hueso que le hicieron daño a miles de niños y que gozan de inmunidad por el simple hecho de usar sotana. Este debiera ser un nuevo mandamiento: no te quedarás callado cuando sepas que alguien abusa de un niño.

Posdata multimillonaria. La revista Forbes ha incluido al dictador Fidel Castro en la lista de los hombres más ricos del mundo. La revista le atribuye una fortuna de 150 millones de dólares e ingresos anuales en el ámbito de los 20 millones de dólares. ¿Cuál es el origen de su fortuna? Parece que todo se inició por la venta de una empresa estatal a extranjeros. O sea, la robolución. ¿Saben cuál es el ingreso promedio de un cubano? 10 dólares al mes.

The Passion and its Abuses

Just a few hours after the controversial film The Passion of the Christ opened in the United States, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops made known their report about their priests' sexual abuse in the United States. And the really surprising thing is that Mel Gibson's two-hour and seven-minute film has received more attention than the half century of abuse and crime committed by Catholic priests against minors.

At the end of the day, The Passion of the Christ is just a movie, and, therefore, is full of fiction, interpretations, and the director's prejudices. Mel Gibson took out 25 million dollars from his pocket to make the movie, and although some people accuse him of anti-Semitism, he has presented his own vision of Jesus Christ's last hours. There are people who have left the movie horrified. The scenes of violence and torture are very dramatic. But it's just a movie and nothing more. On the other hand, the investigation done by the John Jay School of Criminal Justice is real and paints a chilling panorama of abuse, negligence, and complicity within the North American Catholic Church.

These are the statistics. Since 1950, 4,392 priests sexually abused at least 10,667 children. In other words, four percent of 109 thousand priests that have led the Catholic Church in the United States were criminals. But the problem is that the majority of these criminal priests were not formally accused, judged, and, much less, imprisoned. There's more: almost every one of these sexual predators is at this moment free.

Two out of every three victims were abused more than once. How? In many cases, under the influence of alcohol and in the parochial houses where the priests conduct. These priests have a clear homosexual predisposition since eight out of every 10 of the victims were boys under the age of 18. It's necessary to highlight this since homosexuals are not officially accepted in the Catholic Church. The President of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, Wilton Gregory, assures that at this time none of the priests involved in the sexual abuse is conducting mass or working in schools or seminars. It's certain; under the new "zero tolerance" hundreds of abusers have been expelled from the church. But the issue is far from being resolved. Bishop Gregory will not give the list of names of these priests. Neither do we know where they live or what they are now doing. How can the church be so sure that these criminals will not again prey on minors? In a soutane or not, they are dangerous.

One of the most worrysome elements of this report is that bishops, cardinals, and maybe even the Vatican hid these criminal priests.

Questions: At what point did Pope John Paul II find out about this abuse? What did he do to detain it? The report, sadly, does not include one word regarding this. As a Latin American, one of the other things that worries me is that the Latin American Catholic Church has tried to present all of this as a "North American problems" to wipe their hands of it. Nevertheless, based on calls and e-mails that I have received since the first abuse was reported in the Boston Globe, it is probable that this is not just a "North American problem" and is happening throughout the world.

It's difficult in Latin America to question the Catholic Church. It has a greater weight and bigger influence than in the United States and the press thinks three times beforing launching an attack against a priest. In addition, for this same reason, it's easy to conceal something criminal. But it's necessary to demand that every one of our countries does an investigation similar to the one in the United States. If four percent of the American priests were sexual abusers of children, it is statistically possible that the same percentage could be found in Latin America.

After all, the conditions in which sexual abuse occurs and the complicity of the church authorities cross borders and geographic borders.

The problem within the United States, of course, has been cleaned up. But in Latin America it's possible that delincuent priests, abusers of minors, are found in important positions in churches, schools, and seminars. Not denouncing it is being an accomplice of a crime. I urge, I insist, that there be an investigation about sexual abuse among minors with Latin American priests.

Mel Gibson's 'Passion' doesn't worry me. I'm not worried about characters formed in the imagination of an Australian actor but rather human beings of flesh and bone who have harmed thousands of children and who enjoy immunity simply because they wear a priest's robe. This should be a new law: don't remain quiet when you know that someone is abusing a child.
