En abril, la revista Eco Latino cumplió un año. Durante estos primeros doce meses, la revista ha ido creciendo poco a poco, sobre todo gracias al apoyo de nuestros lectores y anunciantes. También es importante recordar que la revista es parte del periódico Athens Banner-Herald y gracias a ellos se creó la publicación. Desde que comencé a trabajar en la revista en diciembre del 2002, el personal del periódico ha sido muy amigable y de gran ayuda. Es un honor y un privilegio poder trabajar con un medio de comunicación que tiene más de 100 años de experiencia, tiene unas instalaciones modernas y un personal profesional que no deja nada al azar cuando se trata de crear y publicar un producto. Al formar parte del Athens Banner-Herald, los que trabajamos en la revista tenemos el apoyo de diferentes departamentos y personal como mercadeo, diseño gráfico, fotógrafos, reporteros, editores, vendedores de publicidad, etc.

Pero al mismo tiempo contamos con total libertad a la hora de tomar decisiones que, los que trabajamos en Eco Latino, creemos son las mejores para la revista. Para empezar, tenemos distribución independiente, no somos una sección del periódico y tenemos quiosquitos donde la gente puede obtener los ejemplares gratis. También llegamos a hospitales, escuelas y negocios. Los temas que tratamos y las historias que cubrimos son decisión de la revista y el periódico nunca ha puesto trabas. La revista utiliza material del periódico y viceversa. La carta del editor se publica tanto en la revista como en el periódico y es una manera importante de darnos a conocer y obtener nuevos lectores. El personal de la revista también ayuda al periódico a traducir, tanto en la creación de anuncios como a la hora de hacer entrevistas en español para un artículo.

Antes de comenzar a trabajar en la revista, ya llevaba casi cinco años viviendo y estudiando en Athens, pero no fue hasta que obtuve el trabajo de editor que me di cuenta de la gran cantidad de recursos con los que cuenta la comunidad hispana. Durante el primer año de publicación, he sido invitado y asistido a muchas reuniones y eventos donde se tratan temas de interés para los hispanos: salud, educación, política, inmigración, leyes, mejoras de la calidad de vida, etc., y he tenido la oportunidad de conocer a personas que trabajan incansablemente para crear, desarrollar y llevar a cabo programas que ayuden a los hispanos viviendo en Athens. Los Servicios Sociales Católicos, el Centro para Estudios Latinoamericanos y del Caribe, el Oasis Católico Santa Rafaela y la Cámara de Comercio Hispana son sólo unos de los muchos grupos y organizaciones sin fines de lucro que existen en Athens, los cuales trabajan muy de cerca con la comunidad hispana. Eco Latino sirve como medio de enlace entre estas organizaciones y todos los hispanos para que así, los que lo necesitan, puedan contactarlas y recibir la ayuda necesaria.

Aprovecho para mencionarles que la revista ha pasado a llamarse Eco Latino. Hemos tomado esta decisión para incluir a todos los condados a los que llegamos. No queremos que nuestros lectores fuera de Athens piensen que por llamarnos Athens Eco Latino, no nos preocupamos en cubrir lo que sucede en sus ciudades y condados. También notarán cambios en el diseño de la revista y nuevas secciones pero la información sigue siendo nuestra prioridad para mantenerlos al día en lo que acontece en sus comunidades. Después de un año, decidimos realizar cambios para así mantenernos a la vanguardia en la presentación de nuestro producto. Esperemos lo disfruten y sigan encontrando información útil, la cual puedan utilizar en el día a día. Por favor, no duden en contactarnos con su opinión, noticias, anuncios, eventos, actividades y cualquier otro tema de interés para usted y el resto de la comunidad hispana del Noreste de Georgia.

Editor's Letter

In April, Eco Latino magazine celebrated its first anniversary. During these first twelve months, the magazine has grown little by little, more than anything thanks to the support of our readers and advertisers. It is also important to remember that the magazine is part of the Athens Banner-Herald newspaper and thanks to them, the publication was created. Since I started working for the magazine in December of 2002, the newspaper's personnel have been very friendly and of great help. It is an honor and a privilege to be able to work with a newspaper that has more than 100 years of experience, has a modern facility, and professional personnel who don't take any chances when it comes to creating and publishing a product. Because we are part of the Athens Banner-Herald, those of us who work on the magazine have the support of the different departments and personnel like marketing, graphic designers, photographers, reporters, editors, sales representatives, etc.

But at the same time, we have total freedom when it comes to making the decisions that, we the staff at Eco Latino, think are best for the magazine. To start with, we have independent distribution, we are not a section in the newspaper, and we have racks where people can get free magazines. We also distribute in hospitals, schools, and businesses. The issues that we cover and the articles that we write are the decisions of the magazine and the newspaper has never obstructed. The magazine uses some material from the newspaper and vice versa. The letter from the editor is published not only in the magazine, but also in the newspaper; this is an important way for us to make ourselves known and gain readers. The magazine's personnel also help the newspaper to translate, whether it is for an advertisement or an interview in Spanish for an article.

Before starting to work for the magazine, I had been living and studying in Athens for almost five years, but I did not realize the large amount of resources available to the Hispanic community until I started working as the editor. During the first year of publication, I have been invited to and have attended many meetings and events about issues within the Hispanic community: health, education, politics, immigration, law, improvement in the quality of life, etc., and I have had the opportunity to meet people who work tirelessly to create, develop, and accomplish programs that help the Hispanics living in Athens. Catholic Social Services, the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Oasis Católico Santa Rafaela, and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce are only a few of the many non-profit groups and organizations that exist in Athens, which work closely with the Hispanic community. Eco Latino serves as a link between these organizations and all Hispanics so that those who need to can contact them and receive help.

I want to take this opportunity to announce that the magazine has changed its name to Eco Latino. We have made this decision so as to include allof the counties where we distribute the magazine. We wouldn't want our readers outside of Athens to think that because our name is Athens Eco Latino, we don't care to cover what happens in their cities and counties. You will also notice some changes in the design of the magazine and new sections, but the information continues to be our priority, keeping you informed on what's happening in your communities. After one year, we decided to make a few changes in order to keep up with the latest in product presentation. We hope you enjoy it and continue to find useful information, which can help you on your daily life. Please, do not hesitate to contact us with your opinion, news, announcements, events, activities, and any other issue of interest to you and the rest of the Hispanic community in the Northeast Georgia.
