Clases de inglés para adultos

Con la llegada de hispanos a Athens, son más los programas, clases y eventos destinados a ayudar a los nuevos residentes a hacer su estadía más fácil. La escuela Oglethorpe Elementary School en Athens ofrece una variedad de programas para todos los miembros de la familia, desde educación para los más pequeños hasta clases de inglés para adultos pasando por actividades que hacen que padres e hijos pasen tiempo juntos y aprendan unos de otros.

De los 460 estudiantes que asisten a la escuela Oglethorpe, alrededor del 30 por ciento (unos 138 estudiantes) son de origen hispano. La escuela, en cooperación con otras instituciones, entre ellas la Universidad de Georgia, ofrece educación escolar para los niños y educación para adultos, la cual incluye clases de inglés y la oportunidad de obtener el diploma de graduación de la escuela secundaria. También se organizan reuniones mensuales donde los padres y sus hijos realizan actividades juntos. Por último, los padres tienen la oportunidad de recibir clases de inglés gratis si participan en un programa donde deben pasar un mínimo de 16 horas al mes en la clase de sus hijos en la escuela o participando en talleres donde aprenden cómo ayudar a sus hijos a estudiar y prepararse para los exámenes.

Scarlett Dunne, directora de la Escuela Oglethorpe Avenue, explica que a través de estos programas, la escuela y el distrito escolar buscan involucrar más a los padres en la educación y desarrollo de sus hijos. "La meta es hacer que los padres se conviertan en los principales maestros de sus hijos", dijo Dunne. "Al involucrar a los padres, los niños se involucran más. Es una situación donde todos ganamos; los padres ganan, los niños ganan y la escuela también gana".

La clase ESOL, inglés como segundo idioma, para adultos comenzó hace un año con tres estudiantes; en la actualidad cuenta con 15. Las clases son dirigidas por Gregory Hall y Mayra Wood de lunes a viernes de 8 a 11:30 de la mañana. "Tenemos invitados, hacemos excursiones, traemos comida a las clases. Hace poco fuimos a ver una obra de teatro en Gainesville", explica Wood, de origen puertorriqueño. Los 15 estudiantes que actualmente aprovechan la oportunidad de aprender inglés son: Jenny Francia, Margarita Solorzano, Virginia Taboada, Juan Carlos Suarez, Lulu Sol de Villa, Norma Rivera, Zoraida Rivera, Emilia Gallegos, Max Ramirez, Hayde Cornejo, Rogelia Gallares, Ana Rios, Ventura de la Luz y Juana Garcia. Según explican los estudiantes, supieron sobre las clase de ESOL a través de sus hijos quienes traen a casa información de la escuela. "En las clases aprendemos vocabulario y gramática además de costumbres de este país", explica una de las estudiantes. "También los profesores aprenden de nosotros y nuestra cultura". Los participantes también visitan diferentes lugares en Athens y aprenden sobre todas las cosas que Athens ofrece a sus residentes. "Una de las actividades es leer el periódico que el Athens Banner-Herald nos envía gratis cada día, así los estudiantes practican leyendo en inglés y además se familiarizan con lo que sucede en Athens," añade Wood.

Hall, con la ayuda de Vicky Ricome, especialista en participación de padres, publican dos hojas de información en español para maestros, estudiantes y padres. La 'Tribuna del Centro de Alfabetización Familiar' contiene información sobre diferentes programas y eventos en los cuales pueden participar los padres. La otra publicación es 'Los gatos Monteses', en honor a la mascota de la escuela, donde se recogen las noticias más importantes de la escuela ocurridas durante el último mes. Esta publicación mensual de cuatro hojas contiene texto y fotos.

Ricome, peruana, sirve de enlace entre los padres hispanos y la escuela. Algunas de sus responsabilidades son visitar los hogares de los padres hispanos, traducir entre padres hispanos y maestros, coordinar el trabajo de voluntarios, invitar y recordar a padres hispanos a participar en las conferencias y reuniones entre padres y maestros, traducir documentos, ayudar en la publicación del periódico de la escuela (sección en español) y ordenar y entregar libros bilingŸes a los estudiantes, muchas veces para ayudar a sus padres a aprender inglés.

English Classes for Adults

With the arrival of more Hispanics to Athens, there are more and more programs and events intended to help the new residents to make their stay easier. Oglethorpe Elementary School in Athens offers are variety of programs for all members of the family, ranging from education for infants to English classes for adults and activities for parents and children to spend time together and learn from one another.

Of the 460 students that attend Oglethorpe, around 30 percent (some 138 students) are Hispanic. The school, in cooperation with other institutions, among them the University of Georgia, offers school education for children and education for adults, which includes English classes and the opportunity to obtain a high school diploma. Monthly meetings in which parents and children do activities together are also held. In addition, the parents have the opportunity to take free English classes if they participate in a program where they spend a minimum of 16 hours every month in their child's class or participating in workshops where they learn how to help their children to study and prepare for tests.

Scarlett Dunne, Oglethorpe's Avenue's principal, explains that through these programs, the school and the school district try to involve parents more in the education and development of their children. "The goal is for the parents to become their children's main teachers," said Dunne. "When the parents get involved, the children get involved more. It's a win-win situation; the children win and the school also wins."

The ESOL (English as a second language) class for adults started a year ago with three students; it presently has 15. The classes are taught by Gregory Hall and Mayra Wood on Mondays through Fridays from 8 to 11:30 in the morning. "We have guest speakers, we go on field trips, and we bring food to class. A few weeks ago we went to see a play in Gainesville," explains Wood, of Puerto Rican origin. The 15 students currently taking advantage of the opportunity to learn English are: Jenny Francia, Margarita Solorzano, Virginia Taboada, Juan Carlos Suarez, Lulu Sol de Villa, Norma Rivera, Zoraida Rivera, Emilia Gallegos, Max Ramirez, Hayde Cornejo, Rogelia Gallares, Ana Rios, Ventura de la Luz, and Juana Garcia. According to what the students explained, they found out about the English classes through their children who brought home information from the school. "In the classes we learn vocabulary and grammar in addition to the customs of this country," explains one of the students. "The teachers in turn learn about us and our culture." The participants also visit different places in Athens and learn about what Athens has to offer to its residents. "One of our activities is to read the free newspaper that the Athens Banner-Herald sends us every day, that way the students practice learning English and become familiar with what is happening in Athens," adds Wood.

Hall, with the help of Vicky Ricome, parent participation specialist, publishes two information newsletters in Spanish for teachers, students, and parents. The 'Tribuna del Centro de Alfabetización Familiar' contains information about different programs and events in which the parents can participate. The other publication is 'Los gatos Monteses,' in honor of the school mascot, which features important school news during each month. This monthly publication is four pages and has text and photos.

Ricome, Peruvian, serves as the liaison between Hispanic parents and the school. Her responsibilities include visiting the homes of Hispanic parents, translating between Hispanic parents and teachers, coordinating volunteer work, inviting and reminding Hispanic parents to participate in the conferences and meetings between teachers and parents, translating documents, helping with the publication of the school newsletter (Spanish section) and organizing and giving bilingual books to students, usually in order to help the parents to learn English.
