Familia, comida y diversión en la Escuela Primaria Oglethorpe

Una mezcla de culturas, platillos y la unión de diferentes países se pudo ver en la Noche de Cultura de la Escuela Primaria Oglethorpe el Jueves, 27 de enero. Los jóvenes estudiantes que asisten a la escuela regresaron esa tarde para aprender más sobre las culturas de sus compañeros de clase. Al mismo tiempo, para crear un ambiente de mayor diversidad cultural, muchos de los estudiantes trajeron a sus familiares y amigos.

Se le pidió a cada familia que trajera un plato tradicional de su país como posole, enchiladas y tamales.

Sin embargo, la celebración no se limitó a los deliciosos platillos. La banda de música de jazz latina Los Groggus realizó una presentación especial para traer otra parte esencial de la cultura latina: el ritmo latino. Y por supuesto, tan pronto comenzó la música, también se pudo ver a la gente bailar.

La 4ta. Noche de Cultura consecutiva de la Escuela Oglethorpe fue un éxito. Vicky Ricome, peruana y especialista familiar de la escuela, es la fundadora de Noche de Cultura. "Comencé el programa cuando me dí cuenta que existía una falta de conocimiento culural. Quería que los niños fueran expuestos a la diversisdad que existe en Latinoamérica", explicó Ricome. Que mejor manera de hacerlo que con un evento anual que promueva un mejor entendimiento y respeto de la diversidad cultural en las escuelas y comunidad.

Timr for family, food, and fun at Oglethorpe Elementary

A blending of cultures, a plethora of cuisines, and a coming together of backgrounds was found on Culture Night at Oglethorpe Elementary School on Thursday, January 27.

The young students that attend the school came back that afternoon to expand their understanding of their fellow students' different cultures. To further enhance the diversity of those in attendance, many of the students brought along their friends and families. Each family was asked to bring along a traditional dish for others to try. A strong Latino presence was felt in the many traditional dishes such as posole, enchiladas, and tamales. However, the celebration did not stop at the delicious cuisine. The Latino jazz band "Los Groggus" made a special appearance in order to bring in another essential part of Latino culture, the Latino rhythm. And of course, as the variety of cultures began to blend, so did the dancing.

Oglethorpe's 4th consecutive Culture Night was a huge success. Vicky Ricome, Peruvian and Parent Specialist at Oglethorpe Elementary, is Culture Night founder. Ricome explained, "I began the program when I noticed a lack of cultural understanding. I wanted to expose the children to the vast diversity found with in Latin America." And what a better way to do that than immerse them in the tastes and sounds of other cultures. Ricome plans to continue the event each year in hopes of promoting a better understanding and respect for cultural diversity through the school and community.
