Descubriendo Mexico: estudiantes realizan intercambio

La ciudad de Xalapa, además de ser la capital del estado de Veracruz, forma parte de la ruta que realizó Hernán Cortés durante su conquista de México hace casi 500 años. Gracias al rol que jugó en la Conquista, Xalapa contiene una mezcla de influencia española y su propio estilo mexicano en sus calles, sus edificios y su ambiente.

Tres estudiantes de la Universidad de Georgia, quienes están participando en un intercambio entre UGA y la Universidad Veracruzana, disfrutarán de seis meses para descubrir esta ciudad única en la República de México.

Las estudiantes, Laura Messengale y Missy Willingham, acaban de empezar su estancia en Xalapa y ya están emocionadas por la oportunidad de estudiar en México como estudiantes de intercambio. "Quiero ser maestra en Georgia cuando me gradue en UGA", comentó Missy. "Y el poder aprender sobre la cultura mexicana me va a ayudar en el futuro en mi carrera". También Laura, quien acaba de terminar un intercambio en Francia, expresó las razones para venir a México, "Quiere aprender lo más que pueda sobre México y saber más sobre la relación entre México y Estados Unidos. Todos somos parte de las Américas y es importante aprender sobre esta parte del mundo". Las dos estudiantes disfrutarán de varias oportunidades de aprender sobre la cultura mexicana, la vida estudiantil y familiar durante su estancia.

Aunque sólo hayan estado en Xalapa durante unas semanas, Messy y Laura ya están aprovechando esta oportunidad y están familiarizándose con la cultura mexicana. Hace unas semanas, junto a otras extranjeras, las dos estudiantes viajaron a la celebración del Carnaval en Veracruz, importante centro turístico y puerto marítimo ubicado a tres horas de Xalapa. Las estudiantes se divirtieron durante su experiencia en Veracruz, "disfrutando de la comida y bebidas típicas y bailando salsa", según explicó Missy. Durante su visita a Veracruz, el primer lugar a donde llegaron los conquistadores españoles, Laura explicó que la sensación de "sentirse extranjera pero al mismo tiempo sentirse como si fueras parte de esa cultura, fue algo muy chido (bonito)".

Visitar y vivir en otro país ayuda a que las persona vean y se den cuenta de las diferencias y las similitudes entre las culturas y ambientes que existen en el mundo. Laura y Missy comentaron que ya han aprendido muchas cosas sobre la cultura mexicana, la cual tiene tantos aspectos diferentes a la estadounidense. "La familia es muy importante aquí", dijo Missy. "Me ha hecho querer ser más unida con mi familia y también me ha ayudado a darme cuenta de la importancia de la familia". Desarrollando sus interpretaciones sobre la cultura mexicana, Laura dijo que, "me fascina la comida aquí. Tengo mucho tiempo cada día para mi comida y me hace sentir como si el día fuera muy relajado y prolongado".

Las dos alumnos, quienes dentro de poco empezarán sus clases en la facultad de la Universidad Veracruzana, están muy emocionadas de poder ser parte de la vida estudiantil mexicana. "Siento que todos los estudiantes tienen mentes muy abiertas", dijo Missy. "Siento que los estudiantes aquí tiene relaciones más unidas (que los estudiantes en Estados Unidos)".

Estudiar en otro país es una experiencia que ayuda a crecer, a descubrir nuevas cosas y a aprender lo que une a las personas como seres humanos. Además de tomar clases en la universidad, las dos muchachas tienen planes de trabajar en una de las muchas organizaciones sociales en Xalapa y ayudar a solucionar los problemas que existen en esta parte del mundo. "Estudiar en otro país te ayuda a aprender sobre ti misma al mismo tiempo que estás aprendiendo sobre otras culturas," dijo Laura. Mientras que Missu admitió que, "quiero expandir mi mente. Quiero ver Estados Unidos de una manera diferente y siento que ya he empezado a hacerlo".

Discovering Mexico: students travel abroad

The city of Xalapa, aside from being the capital of the capital of the state of Veracruz, forms part of the route that Hernán Cortés traveled during his conquest of Mexico nearly 500 years ago. Thanks to the part that it played in the Conquest, Xalapa contains a mixture of Spanish influence and its own Mexican stile in its streets, buildings, and atmosphere.

Two students from the University of Georgia, who are participating in an exchange program between UGA and the University of Veracruz, will enjoy six months discovering this unique city in the republic of México. The students, Laura Messengale and misy Willingham, just began their stay here in the city and are already very excited about the opportunity to study in Mexico. "I want to be a teacher in Georgia when I graduated from UGA," commented Missy. "And the ability to learn about Mexican culture will help me in the future with my career." Laura, who recently participated in an exchange program in France, also expressed her reasons for coming to Mexico. "I want to learn as much as I can about Mexico and mor about the relationship between Mexico and the United States. We all make up part of the Americas and it is important to learn about this part of the world." Both students will enjoy many opportunities to learn about Mexican culture, student life and family life during their stay here.

Although they haveonly been Xalapa for a few weeks, Missy and Laura are already taking advantage of the opportunity and familiarizing themselves with Mexican culture. A few weeks ago the students, along with other exchange students, traveled to the celebration of Carnaval in Veracruz, an important historic area and maritime port located two hours from Xalapa. The students enjoyed immensely their experience in Veracruz, "enjoying the typical food and drinks and dancing salsa," as Missy explained. During their visit in Veracruz, the first place that the Spanish conquistadors arrived, Laura explained that the sensation of "feeling like a foreigner but at the same time feeling as if you were part of the culture was something really cool."

Visiting and living in other countries helps people realize the differences and similarities that exist among the cultures of the world. Laura and Missy commented that they have already learned a lot of things about Mexican culture, a culture that has many different aspects when compared with American culture. "Families are so important here, " said Missy. "It has made me want to be closer to my family and it has also helped me realize the importance of family in society," she continued saying. Explaining her interpretations of Mexican culture, Laura noted that "I am fascinated with the food here. I have a large space every day for my lunch and it makes it seem as if the day was very relaxed and prolonged."

The two students, who in a short time will begin classes in the University of Veracruz here in Xalapa, are very excited about the opportunity to be a part of Mexican student life. "I feel like all the students have very open minds," said missy. "I feel like the students here have closer relationships than students in the United States," she continued saying.

Studying in other countries is an experience that helps someone grow, discover new things and learn what unites us as humn beings. Besides taking classes in the University, the two students have plans to work in one of the many social service organizations here in Xalapa and to help solve problems that exist in this part of the world. "Studying in another country helps learn about yourself at the same time that you are learning about other cultures, "said Laura. Meanwhile Missy admitted that, "I ant to expand my mind. I want to see the United States in a different manner and I feel like I have already started to do that."
