Estudiantes hispanos juegan fútbol en el equipo de la escuela por Melissa Borgoño El fútbol ha sido llamado el deporte "rey" en el mundo porque lo juegan y es religiosamente seguido por millones de personas. En países como España, México y Perú, el fútbol es el deporte nacional. Cuando los europeos, centro y sudamericanos vienen a vivir a Estados Unidos, traen con ellos el amor por el fútbol. Algunas de las personas que han importado la pasión por el fútbol a este país son tres estudiantes de la Escuela Secundaria Cedar Shoals en Athens. Javier Kienzle, David Robles y Joel Montalvo defienden los colores azul y anaranjado de su escuela con orgullo y también rinden honor a su herencia hispana dando el cien por cien en cada entrenamiento y partido. Kienzle, español y estudiante de cuarto año, juega de defensa. Debido a su experiencia y su posición en el campo, juega un importante papel en el equipo. "Voy a dar lo máximo posible cada vez que juegue", dijo Kienzle de 17 años. "Mi meta es ganar, especialmente a Clarke Central". Kienzle planea cursar estudios universitarios y jugar fútbol para el equipo de la universidad. Le gusta ver y seguir los resultados y últimas noticias del fútbol mundial. Su equipo favorito es el Barcelona de España y su jugador favorito es el italiano Francesco Totti. Robles viene de México donde el equipo nacional, también conocido como el Tri, levanta pasiones, sin embargo, su equipo favorito en México son Los Pumas de la UNAM de la Ciudad de México. Robles comenzó a jugar fútbol cuando tenía diez años. "Me emociono cuando veo mi equipo jugar en la televisión", admite Robles quien juega por la banda izquierda, tanto en el centro del campo como en defensa. "Sólo quiero ayudar al equipo tanto como pueda". Robles también ha sido influido a jugar este deporte por todos sus hermanos quienes también juegan fútbol. También admite que su equipo favorito en el mundo es el Manchester United de la Liga Premier Inglesa y su jugador favorito es el brasileño Ronaldinho. Mientras tanto, Joel Montalvo es un peruano de 15 años y polivalente jugador quien puede situarse tanto en el medio campo como de delantero. "Me emociono y también me divierto cuando juego fútbol", dice. "Comencé a jugar en Perú con mi papá cuando era pequeño". Los equipos favoritos de Montalvo a nivel internacional son la selección nacional de Brasil, el Newcastle y el Manchester United de Inglaterra y el Universitario de su país natal. El entrenador del equipo de fútbol es Hoke Howard quien dice que los tres jugadores hispanos aportan diferentes estilos de juego y actitudes, los cuales son buenos para el equipo, y también traen la pasión por el deporte que los jugadores estadounidenses a veces no tienen. "Me gustaría tener más jugadores hispanos en el equipo porque mejoraríamos", dice el entrenador Hoke. Pero también admite que dos de los problemas que enfrenta el equipo a la hora de atraer jugadores hispanos son la barrera del idioma y la elegibilidad debido a las notas. La Escuela Secundaria Cedar Shoals también se enorgullece de tener un equipo de muchachas. En la división JV, hay varias jugadoras que son hispanas: Clara Kienzle, Fiorella Montalvo, Maria Fernanda Cornejo, Louisiana Ricome y Camila Alvarez. El equipo de muchachos practica todos los días de la semana y juega partido de liga durante el Semestre de Primavera. Por su parte, las muchchas de la division JV practican tres veces a la semana y también juegan durante el Semestre de Primavera. In countries such as Spain, Mexico, and Peru, soccer is the national sport. When Europeans, Central and South Americans come to live in the United States, they bring the love for the game with them. Some of these people who have imported the joy for soccer to this country are three students at Cedar Shoals High School in Athens. Javier Kienzle, David Robles, and Joel Montalvo defend the blue and orange colors of their school with pride and they also honor their Hispanic heritage by giving a 100 percent at each practice and match. Kienzle, senior and of Spanish origin, plays defense. Because of his experience and position as a sweeper, he plays an important role in the team. "I'm going to play as hard as I've ever had," said the 18 year old. "My main goal is to win, specially to beat Clarke Central." Kienzle plans to attend college and keep playing soccer. He enjoys watching and keeping up with the latest news and information from the soccer world. His favorite team is Barcelona from Spain and his favorite player is Italian star Francesco Totti. Robles comes from Mexico where the national team, known as the Tri, raises passions, however, his favorite team in Mexico is "Los Pumas de la UNAM' of Mexico City. Robles started playing soccer when he was ten years old. "I get passionate when my team plays on TV," admits Robles who plays left back and left middle. "I just want to help the team as much as I can". Roble has also been influenced to play the sport by all his brothers who also play soccer. He also admits that his favorite team in the world is Manchester United from the English Premier League and his favorite player is Brazilian Ronaldinho. Meanwhile, Joel Montalvo is a 15 years old Peruvian and polyvalent player who can position himself either on midfield or forward. "I get excited and start having fun when I play soccer," he says. "I started to play back in Peru with my father when I was little." Montalvo's favorite international teams are the Brazilian national team, Newcastle and Manchester United from England, and Universitario from his home country. The men's soccer team coach is Hoke Howard who says that the three Hispanic players bring different styles of play and different attitudes, which is a good thing for the team, and they also bring the passion for the game that American players sometimes don't have. "I'd like to have more Hispanic players in the team because it'd make the team better," says Coach Hoke. But he also admits that two of the biggest problems the team faces getting Hispanics to play soccer is the communication barrier and eligibility. Cedar Shoals High School is also proud to have a girls' soccer team. In the JV division, there are several Hispanic girls in the roster: Clara Kienzle, Fiorella Montalvo, Maria Fernanda Cornejo, Louisiana Ricome, and Camila Alvarez. The men's varsity team practices every weekday and plays league games during the Spring Semester. Meanwhile, the JV girls' team host practices three times a week and plays league games also during Spring Semester.
