Los Tres Reyes Magos visitan Athens

Cuando los hispanos deciden ir a vivir a otros países, entre sus pertenencias llevan una maleta llena de recuerdos y tradiciones, los cuales comparten con otras personas y los pasan a las siguientes generaciones.

Una tradición religiosa y cultural muy arraigada en la comunidad hispana es la celebración de la llegada de Los Tres Reyes Magos. En España y Latinoamérica son los niños los que esperan con más ansias la llegada de los reyes porque traen regalos a los niños que se portan bien. La historia dice que los reyes magos de oriente siguieron una estrella que los guió hasta el pesebre donde nació el niño Jesús en la ciudad de Belén. En Athens, los reyes siguieron la estrella hasta varios vecindarios donde viven muchos niños y familias hispanas.

Desde hace 15 años, Conchita Jounkin ha traido felicidad a muchos niños hispanos en Athens. En enero, Jounkin, con la ayuda de sus hijos Enma y José, su nieto David y también de voluntarios como Roberta y Angela, distribuyeron regalos en Pinewood Estates y otros vecindarios en Athens con gran población hispana. Durante los últimos cinco años, Jounkin ha recibido la donación de regalos por parte de Toys for Tors, la cual es una organización que recoge regalos durante el año y luego los distribuye entre otras organizaciones y grupos que los llevan a los niños. "Durante los primeros años, íbamos a la tienda de un dólar y compramos algunos juguetes con el dinero que teníamos de donaciones", recuerda Jounkin, quien nació en Sevilla, España. "Desde hace cinco años tenemos la suerte de trabajar con Toys for Tots".

La distribución de los juguetes entre los difentes vecindarios se llevó a cabo un domingo, pero el día anterior también se realizó una actividad similar en la Iglesia Católica St. Joseph en la Avenida Prince donde participaron alrededor de 1.000 personas según datos suministrados por Jounkin.

Jounkin comenzó esta actividad en Athens porque vió como muchos niños pedían sus regalos a Santa Claus o Papá Noel y no quiso que se olvidaran de una tradición tan hispana como es escribir la carta a los Tres Reyes Magos: Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar. "En España celebramos la Epifanía cada año el seis de enero y no quería que se perdiera la tradición", explica Jounkin con un acento andaluz.

La organización encargada de recolectar regalos en Athens para Toys for Tots es la Navy Supply Corps School en la Avenida Prince. "Desde hace cinco años que el Capitán Barnett nos ha concedido regalos", dice Jounkin. "Pero a partir de este año trabajaremos con el Capitán Corks".

The Three Wise Men Visit Athens

When Hispanic people decide to leave their country, among their belongings they carry a bag full of memories and traditions, which they share with other people and pass it to the next generation.

A religious and cultural tradition very attached in the Hispanic community is the celebration of the arrival of The Three Wise Men. In Spain and Latin America the children are the ones who wait with more anxiety the arrival of the kings because they bring gifts to the well-behaved kids. The story says that the wise kings of the occident followed stars that guided them to several neighborhoods where many kids and Hispanic families live.

Since 15 years ago, Conchita Jounkin has brought happiness to many Hispanic children in Athens. In January, Joukin, with help of her kids Enma and José, her grandchild David and also other voluntaries like Roberta and Angela, distributed gifts at Pinewood Estates and other neighborhoods in Athens with a Hispanic population. During the last five years, Joukin has received the donation of gifts from Toys for Tots, which is an organization that collects gifts during the year and then it distributes among other organizations and groups who distributes them to the children." During the first years, we used to go to the dollar store and we would buy some toys with the money that was donated." Joukin said, who was born in Sevilla, España. " Since 5 years ago we had the luck to work with toys for tots."

The distribution of the toys in between different neighborhoods was held on a Sunday, but the day before a similar activity was realized at the Catholic Church St. Joseph on Prince Avenue where around of 1.000 people participated according to Jounkin.

Jounkin started this activity in Athens because she noticed many kids asking for gifts to Santa Claus or Papá Noel and she didn't want them to forget a Hispanic tradition like write a letter to the Three Wise Men: Melchor, Gaspar, and Baltasar.

"At Spain we celebrate the Epiphany every year on January 6th and I didn't want to loose the tradition", Jounkin explains with a southern Spanish accent.

The organization who is in charge of collecting gifts in Athens for Toys for Tots is the Navy Supply Corps School at Prince Avenue." Since five years ago, Captain Barnett has donated gifts to us," says Jounkin. "But starting this year we'll work with Captain Corks."
