Una a-Ventura exitosa

La mayoría de los inmigrantes hispanos que ingresan a los Estados Unidos deciden comenzar una nueva vida en ciudades o estados donde ya existe una considerable población hispana como California, Florida, Arizona, Texas o incluso Nueva York pero algunos son más aventureros y buscan nuevos horizontes en lugares donde la comunidad hispana no se ha hecho notar todavía.

Cuando Esteban Ventura y su esposa Magda llegaron a Pennsylvania en el verano de 1973 provenientes de su natal Perú, el número de hispanos es este estado del noreste representaba menos del tres por ciento de la población total. Pero ni la falta del idioma español en la comunidad, ni el frío intenso del invierno hicieron que los Ventura cambiaran su decisión de triunfar en este país. "Llegamos en verano y el clima era perfecto pero cuando llegó el invierno, hizo frío pero nos encantó la nieve", recuerda Esteban. "Nunca habíamos visto la nieve".

Después de intertarlo en varios empleos, Esteban y su esposa se dieron cuenta de la importancia de saber hablar inglés para triunfar en el mundo de los negocios en Estados Unidos. Es así como decidieron inscribirse en clases de inglés en una pequeña universidad en donde vivían. Luego, cuando su nivel de inglés había mejorado, Esteban consiguió un trabajo en una planta de emsamblaje de camiones de la compañía Mack, y Magda hizo lo mismo en una oficina que ayudaba a hispanos a conseguir trabajo.

Durante 11 años, Esteban y Magda hicieron de Pennsylvania su hogar hasta que un día Esteban recibió la triste noticia de que la compañía donde trabajaba iba a reducir su personal y lo iban a despedir. "Fue durante la crisis de los automóviles de principios de los ochenta, cuando Reagan era Presidente", explica Esteban. "La planta de Mack en California le dijo a sus empleados que podían ir a la calle o ir a vivir y trabajar en la planta en Pennsylvania donde iban a despedir a los empleados que tuvieran menos de 12 años trabajando para ellos". Después de este duro golpe, Esteban y Magda decidieron contactar a unos familiares de ella que vivían en Athens. "Cuando vinimos a Athens en el 85, ya teníamos donde vivir porque la familia nos ayudó", recuerda Esteban.

A pesar de llevar poco tiempo en Athens, los Ventura decidieron involucrarse en la comunidad y ponerse manos a la obra. Magda comenzó a asistir a una escuela de belleza donde conoció a una maestra que era dueña de una peluquería. Los Ventura tuvieron la oportunidad de comprar la peluquería y no la desaprovecharon. "Se llama Infinity. La compramos a una familia estadounidense en 1987", explica Magda. "Después de un año de abrir la peluquría me di cuenta que había que ayudar a los hispanos con sus problemas como seguro de auto, teléfonos celulares, corte y otros temas relacionados con inmigración", añade Esteban sobre sus clientes hispanos que iban a la peluquería.

Es por eso que Esteban decidió abrir Infinity Service. El negocio ofrece un sin fin de servicios a la comunidad como tarjetas de identificación personal, traducciones, notario público, documentos de inmigración, títulos, placas y seguros para autos, teléfonos celulares, envíos de dinero, reembolso de impuestos, tarjetas telefónicas, pasajes de avión y fianzas, entre otros. Infinity Services cuenta con oficinas en Athens y Winder (Condado Barrow). "Cuando comenzamos el negocio, habían pocos hispanos. Fuimos de casa en casa, a las iglesias, canchas de fútbol y por la comunidad distribuyendo volantes con información sobre los servicios que ofrecíamos", recuerda Esteban. Según Magda, el éxito de Infinity Services se debe a "lo que uno dice hay que cumplirlo. Le demostramos a los clientes que en realidad nos preocupamos por ellos".

A Successful Ad-Venture

The majority of Hispanic immigrants who enter the United States decide to start a new life in cities or states where there is a considerable Hispanic population like California, Florida, Arizona, Texas, and even New York, but some of them are more adventurous and look for new horizons in places where the Hispanic community has not set roots yet.

When Esteban Ventura and his wife Magda arrived to Pennsylvania in the summer of 1973 from his native country of Peru, the number of Hispanics in Northeast Pennsylvania represented less than three percent of the total population. Neither the lack of Spanish language nor the intense cold of winter made the Venturas change his decision of succeeding in this country. "We arrived during the summer and the weather was perfect but when winter came, it was cold but we loved the snow," Esteban remembers. "We had never seen the snow before."

After working at several jobs, Esteban and his wife realized the importance of learning English to succeed in the business world in the United States. That's why they decided to enroll in English classes in a small community college where they lived. Then, when their English skills improved, Esteban got a job at Mack's assembly truck plant, and Magda did the same in an office that helped Hispanics to get jobs.

During 11 years, Esteban and Magda made of Pennsylvania their home until one day Esteban received the sad news that the company where he was working was going to downsize its staff and he was going to get fired. "It happened during the automobile crisis at the beginning of the eighties when Reagan was the President," explains Esteban. "The Mack plant in California told their employees that they could either be fired or go live and work at the plant in Pennsylvania where the company was going to fire employees who had less than 12 years working for them." After hearing that heart breaking news, Esteban and Magda decided to contact some of her relatives who were living in Athens. "When we came to Athens in 1985, we already had where to live because Magda's family helped us", explains Esteban. In spite of living in Athens for a short period of time, the Venturas decided to get involve in the community and began working, Magda started to attend a cosmetology school where she met a teacher who was the owner of a barbershop. The Venturas didn't waste the opportunity of buying the barbershop. "It was Infinity. We bought it from an American family in 1987," Magda explains. "After a year of opening the barbershop, I realized that we needed to help the Hispanics with their problems like car insurance, cell phones, haircuts and other services related with immigration," Esteban adds about the Hispanic clients who went to the barbershop. That it's why Esteban decided to open Infinity Services. The business offers an endless list of services to the community like ID cards, translations, notary public, immigration documents, car insurance, tag and car titles, cell phones, sending money overseas, taxes, phone cards, plane tickets, and jail bonds, among others. Infinity Services has offices in Athens and Winder (Barrow County). "When we started this business, there were few Hispanics. We went knocking door to door, to churches, soccer fields, and distributing flyers around the community with information about the services we offered," remembers Esteban. According to Magda, the success of Infinity Services was due to "what one promises, one must do. We showed to people that we really cared about them."
