El Distrito Escolar del Condado Clarke realiza dos eventos especiales

Para celebrar la Semana Nacional de Libros para Niños y el Día Nacional de Participación de los Padres, el Distrito Escolar del Condado Clarke organizó dos eventos en noviembre.

El jueves, 18 de noviembre, cerca de 1.000 personas, maestros, estudiantes y miembros de la comunidad llenaron el Classic Center de Athens con motivo de la 2da. Celebración Anual de Participación Familiar y Alfabetización. Los asistentes disfrutaron de pizza, seguido de presentaciones de grupos de estudiantes, incluyendo una banda de música, un grupo de baile y dos coros de niños. Se ofreció cuidado infantil y se obsequiaron tarjetas de regalo para obtener material educacional a las dos escuelas con el mayor índice de asistencia al evento.

Pero el centro de atención de la tarde fue Bob Lancer, reconocido escritor nacional y presentador de un programa de radio semanal llamado "Bob Lancer's Parenting Solutions". Lancer habló amigablemente con la audiencia sobre las responsabilidades heredadas al convertirnos en padres. "Cuando eres un padre", dijo varias veces lancer, "nunca dejas de tener trabajo". Enfatizó el hecho de que los niños son el resultado del ambiente donde viven y que es el trabajo de los padres de asegurarse de que ese ambiente sea positivo, seguro y provechoso.

Lancer terminó su presentación pidiendo a los presentes que se unieran a él para cantar la conocida canción infantil "Row, Row, Row your Boat". Describió semejanzas a la vida real, recordando a los padres que durante la vida uno debe trabajar y desarrollar actividades y los animó a que lo hagan con una actitud positiva y feliz.

Jan Stephens, Director de la Oficina de Aprendizaje Temprano y Participación Familiar, dijo, "los padres son los primeros y más importantes maestros y el trabajo del Señor Lancer hace eco de la importancia de la participación de los padres y la comunidad en las escuelas".

El evento fue una colaboración en todo el sentido de la palabra porque la mayoría de los departamentos del distrito escolar, al igual que varios patrocinadores de la comunidad, tomaron parte.

Padres y grupos comunitarios respondieron al llamado de Lancer y se involucraron el viernes, 19 de noviembre cuando cientos de personas visitaron las escuelas como parte del programa "Héroes de la alfabetización". Lectores voluntarios visitaron 13 escuelas primarias y cuatro escuelas secundarias en un esfuerzo por reforzar el mensaje de que la lectura es importante y puede ser divertida. Lectores bilingües visitaron algunas de las escuelas con mayor número de estudiantes hispanos y leyeron en inglés y español.

Los dos eventos fueron un gran éxito y un claro ejemplo de lo que se puede lograr cuando las escuelas, los padres y la comunidad se únen para el beneficio de los niños de Athens.

Un agradecimiento especial a los grupos que participaron en este día tan importante para los estudiantes: Junior League de Athens, Departemto Atlético de UGA, Marines, Athens Rotary West, Departamento de Policía del Condado Athens-Clarke, Departamento de Servicios Familiares y Niños (DFACS por sus siglas en inglés), Junta Educativa del Disitrito Escolar, Departamento de Educación de Georgia, Departamento del Sheriff, Escuela de Marina, Departamento de Bomberos, Banda de música de UGA, Starbucks y muchos padres.

También un agradecimiento al Classic Center, McLane Southeast, Duplicating Systems, Lakeshore Learning Materials, Athens Banner-Herald, Ellyn Trinrud y Papa John's Pizza, sin los cuales no se podría haber llevado a cabo estos eventos.

Clarke County School District Engages the Community

In celebration of both National Children's Book Week and National Parent Involvement Day, the Clarke County School District hosted two very special events in November.

On Thursday, November 18th, nearly 1,000 parents, teachers, students, and community members flooded the Classic Center for the 2nd Annual Family Engagement and Literacy Celebration. Attendees enjoyed a free pizza dinner, followed by entertainment from several student groups, including a jazz band, a step team, and two children's choirs. Free childcare was provided and gift certificates for educational materials were awarded to the two schools with the highest attendance at the event.

But the focus of the evening was on Bob Lancer, nationally recognized author and host of the weekly radio program Bob Lancer's Parenting Solutions. Lancer spoke candidly with his audience about the inherent responsibilities that parenthood brings. "When you are a parent," said Lancer time and again, "there is no such thing as being out of a job." He stressed the fact that children are a product of their environment, and that it is a parent's job to make sure that environment is a positive, safe, and nurturing one.

Lancer closed his time by asking the audience to join him in singing the well-known children's tune "Row, Row, Row your Boat." Drawing parallels to real life, he reminded parents that in life one must work at things (row your boat), and he challenged them to do so gladly and with a positive outlook (merrily).

Jan Stephens, Director of the District's Office of Early Learning and Family Engagement, said, "Parents are the first and most important teachers and Mr. Lancer's work echoes the importance of parental and community involvement in schools."

The evening's event was a collaboration in every sense of the word, with nearly every department in the school district, as well as several community sponsors, playing a part.

Parents and community groups answered Lancer's challenge to get involved on Friday, November 19th when hundreds visited area schools as "Literacy Heroes." Volunteer readers visited all 13 elementary schools and all four middle schools in an effort to reinforce the message that reading is important and it can be fun. Bilingual readers visited some of the schools with larger population of Hispanic students and read their favorite stories in English and well as in Spanish.

Both of the events were huge successes and true examples of what can be accomplished when schools, parents, and communities come together for the greater good of the children of Athens.

A special thanks to the groups that shared in this important day for the students. They included: Junior League of Athens, UGA Athletic Department, Marines, Athens Rotary West, Athens-Clarke County Police Department, Department of Family and Children's Services (DFACS), CCSD Board of Education, State Department of Education, Clarke County Sheriff's Department, Navy School, Athens-Clarke County Fire Department, UGA Redcoat Marching Band and Auxiliaries, Starbucks Coffee, and many dedicated parents.
