Creado un glosario inglés-español de términos relacionados con la educación superior y la ayuda económica estudiantil Hispanic PR Wire Un grupo de organizaciones de distintos lugares del país ha creado un glosario inglés-español de términos comunes relacionados con la ayuda económica estudiantil y la educación superior. La iniciativa incluye organizaciones que trabajan en el campo de la ayuda económica estudiantil y que promueven el acceso a la educación superior para hispanos por todo el país: Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, National Association for College Admission Counseling, National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, Nacional Council for Community and Education Partnerships, National Council of Higher Education Loan Programs, TG, U.S. Department of Education, y U.S. General Services Administration a través de FirstGov en español. Los estudios han mostrado que menos hispanos continúan sus estudios después de la escuela secundaria (high school), en comparación con otros grupos étnicos. Una de las razones parece ser la falta de conocimiento en las comunidades hispanas sobre los recursos económicos disponibles para ayudar a pagar la universidad. Parte del reto de proporcionar información sobre la universidad y la ayuda económica estudiantil a los hispanos proviene del elemento bilingüe de muchas comunidades hispanas. Muchas veces, en esas comunidades, los padres de familia sólo hablan español mientras que sus hijos son bilingües. Además, una encuesta reciente concluyó que muchos padres y estudiantes hispanos preferían aprender sobre la ayuda económica estudiantil en español. Por eso, ofrecer información en español sobre la universidad y la ayuda económica estudiantil podría hacer que asistir a la universidad sea más fácil para los hispanos, especialmente porque el apoyo de los padres es un factor muy importante para asistir a la universidad y obtener un título universitario. Por consiguiente, las organizaciones participantes formularon un glosario inglés-español para brindar un recurso uniforme y fácil de usar para ayudar a aquellos involucrados en la creación de materiales en español sobre la educación superior y la ayuda económica estudiantil. Las organizaciones participantes formaron un grupo de trabajo de expertos en educación, ayuda económica estudiantil y en el idioma español. Estos expertos revisaron y combinaron glosarios preexistentes en una sola herramienta de referencia. La iniciativa anima a las organizaciones que producen materiales en español sobre la educación superior y la ayuda económica estudiantil a aprovechar el glosario para facilitar ese proceso y asegurar que haya más uniformidad en la terminología. El uso del glosario es completamente voluntario. La iniciativa revisará el glosario cada primavera. La revisión utilizará un proceso que permitirá a las personas interesadas hacer sugerencias. Para fomentar el espíritu de colaboración e inclusión que ha sobresalido en la realización de este glosario, la primera revisión se llevará a cabo en la primavera de 2005. The initiative includes organizations involved in student financial aid and in promoting access to higher education to Hispanics throughout the country: Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, National Association for College Admission Counseling, National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, National Council for Community and Education Partnerships, National Council of Higher Education Loan Programs, TG, U.S. Department of Education, and the U.S. General Services Administration through FirstGov in Spanish. Studies have shown that fewer Hispanics continue their education after high school than do members of other ethnic groups. One reason for this appears to be the lack of awareness in Hispanic communities about financial resources available to help pay for college. Part of the challenge of providing information about college and student financial aid to Hispanics comes from the bilingual aspect of many Hispanic communities. Often, in those communities, a family's parents speak only Spanish while the children are bilingual. Furthermore, a recent survey found that many Hispanic parents and students would prefer to learn about student financial aid in Spanish. Thus, providing Spanish-language information about college and student financial aid may facilitate college attendance among Hispanics, particularly since parental support is such an important factor in a child's college attendance and completion. The participating organizations developed the English-Spanish glossary to provide a consistent and easy-to-use resource to help those involved in creating Spanish-language materials about higher education and student financial aid. They also created a workgroup of education, student financial aid, and Spanish-language experts who revised and merged pre-existing glossaries into a single reference tool. The initiative encourages organizations that produce Spanish-language materials about postsecondary education and student financial aid to take advantage of this glossary to facilitate that process and to ensure greater consistency in vocabulary. Use of the glossary is entirely voluntary. The workgroup participants will review the glossary each spring. The review will incorporate a process that will allow interested parties to provide input. In order to continue the spirit of cooperation and inclusion that has characterized the development of this glossary, the first review will be in spring 2005. The glossary is free and available from the participating organizations or at www.tgslc.org in an easily searchable Portable Document Format (PDF).
