Nuestras mascotas Primavera: época de romancepor Zarina Galvan McCarthy El panorama de Athens ha empezado a florecer; la primavera ha llegado. Típicamente junto con este colorido viene un aumento de atracciones físicas entre miembros del sexo opuesto, algo que a cualquiera le sonará muy romántico, pero algo que para los animales no siempre es color de rosa. Aproximadamente cinco millones de perros y gatos al año tienen que ser 'eliminados' en albergues humanitarios, siendo la mitad de ellos cachorros y gatitos que nacieron 'accidentalmente' y que son llevados por gente con la errónea impresión de que, por ser chiquitos, fácilmente serán adoptados. Al mencionar la esterilización de perros y gatos es muy común que la gente diga que hay cosas más importantes en qué gastar su dinero. Otra cosa es que algunas personas creen que sólo las hembras deberían ser operadas, pero la verdad es que al dejar a un macho sin operar, uno nunca sabe cuándo se topará con alguna hembra fértil, ya que es muy difícil sólo intentar 'cuidar' a perros y gatos de asociaciones con aquellos del sexo opuesto, especialmente en ésta época del año. Si cree que esto no es nada alarmante, considere las siguientes estadísticas de la sociedad humanitaria en Estados Unidos: Gatos: • Posibilidad de tener tres embarazos al año • Entre cuatro y seis gatitos por embarazo • En un periodo de siete años una gata es capáz de 'reproducirse' con 420,000 gatos Perros • Posibilidad de tener dos embarazos al año • Entre seis y 10 cachorros por embarazo • En un periodo de seis años una perra es capáz de 'reproducirse' con 67,000 perros La esterilización de perros y gatos es un paso clave en este dilema, pero a pesar de repetidas recomendaciones de hacer esto, mucha gente lo ignora, y muchas veces tiene que ver con el costo. Permítanme hecer un par de recomendaciones al rerspecto:  1. Adopten perros o gatos de agencias humanitarias donde ya vengan operados o donde les reembolsen dinero al esterilizarlos; 2. Póngan una alcancía a la mano donde todos en la casa vayan poniendo dinero especialmente designado para la esterilización de su(s) mascota(s) cuanto antes; 3. Comuníquense con las siguientes agencias locales para pedir asistencia con el costo de la operación: PAWS (Sociedad de Asistencia y Bienestar para Mascotas, por sus siglas en inglés) al 706-310-0663 o la Sociedad Humanitaria del Area de Athens (AAHS por sus siglas en inglés) al 706- 353-2287. Estas dos organizaciones asisten a personas de bajos recursos para que esterilicen a sus mascotas recomendando clínicas veterinarias donde el costo de dichas operaciones es más baratas o donde puedan pagar a plazos. También pueden ayudar directamente cubriendo una porción del costo total basado en los ingresos de la familia. Con toda esta información, si usted tiene mascotas 'intactas' en casa, por favor considere esterilizarlas esta primavera. Recuerde que en estos días el amor anda en el aire y que las consecuencias no siempre son románticas. Our Pets Springtime: A Time for Romanceby Zarina Galvan McCarthy The city of Athens has begun to bloom; Spring is here! Typically along with this change in scenery comes a surge of physical attractions between members of the opposite sex, which may sound romantic to humans, but may not be so peachy for our animal friends. Approximately five million dogs and cats have to be "eliminated" in animal shelters every year, half of them being puppies and kittens who were born 'accidentally' and who are taken by people who think that, because they are cute and small, they will easily be adopted.  When sterilization for cats and dogs is mentioned it's common for people to say that there are more important things that need to be taken care of financially rather than spaying or neutering their pets. In other cases, people feel that females are the only gender that should be sterilized, but the truth is that when a male cat or dog is not neutered, one never knows when he'll come across a fertile female. Needless to say, it is very difficult to just rely on 'keeping an eye' on pets to stay away from others of the opposite sex, especially during this time of year. If you don't think this is alarming, consider the following statistics from the National Humane Society: Cats • Possibility of having three pregnancies per year • Between four and six kittens per litter • In a period of seven years, a female cat is able to 'reproduce itself' into 420,000 cats Dogs • Possibility of having two pregnancies per year • Between six and 10 pups per litter • In a period of six years a female dog is able to 'reproduce itself' into 67,000 dogs.
1. Only adopt dogs or cats from humane organizations where they are already spayed / neutered or where you are reimbursed some of the adoption cost once the pet is sterilized; 2. Set up a 'piggy bank' where everyone in the house can make contributions toward the cost of spaying/ neutering the family pet(s) as soon as possible; 3. Contact one of the following local agencies to ask for assistance in covering the costs of the procedure: Pet Assistance and Welfare Society (PAWS) at 706-310-0663 or The Athens Area Humane Society (AAHS) at 706-353-2287. Both of these organizations assist people of lower incomes in sterelizing their pets by way of referring them to clinics where the cost for the surgery is reduced or where people can pay in installments, as well as directly by helping applicants cover the cost of the surgery, based on their financial situation. With all of this information, if you have 'intact' pets at home, please consider sterilizing them this Spring. Re-member that love is in the air these days and that the consequences are not always "peachy".
