Pequeñas Estrellas del Fútbol en Athens

Todos conocemos a los Ronaldos, Zidanes y Beckhams del mundo del fútbol. Juegan en las ligas más competitivas y mejores pagadas como la española, la inglesa y la italiana. Juegan cada fin de semana ante miles de espectadores y son vistos en la televisión por millones de seguidores en todo el mundo también.

No podemos ver estas estrellas del balompié en Athens pero lo que sí podemos ver son las futuras estrellas jugando y desarrollando sus habilidades cada fin de semana en las ligas locales.

Niños y niñas de entre 6 y 10 años se reúnen cada fin de semana en el Holland Youth Sports Complex para competir en diferentes ligas. Las ligas están diseñadas para desarrollar las habilidades de los participantes.

Niños menores de 6 años juegan en equipos de tres jugadores y no tienen un portero, dos adultos supervisan el partido en cada mitad del pequeño campo.

Los menores de ocho años juegan en campos un poco más grandes con cuatro jugadores en cada equipo y sin portero. También son vigilados de cerca por dos adultos.

Los menores de 10 años participan en equipos de cinco jugadores y un portero. Tienen dos entrenadores que se encuentran en los laterales del campo y hay tres árbitros dirigiendo el encuentro.

El tamaño de la pelota y la portería también cambia según la edad de los participantes. Niños y niñas menores de ocho años juegan juntos.

Todos los equipos tienen entrenadores y practican durante la semana. "Nos reunimos una o dos veces durante la semana para practicar y jugamos los partidos los fines de semana", dice Erin Thompson, quien, junto a Roberto Zelaya, entrena a un equipo de niños y niñas menores de ocho años.

Hay cuatro organizaciones participando en la liga: Athens YWCO, Athens YMCA, Athens United Soccer Association y la Escuela Católica Saint Joseph con un total de 875 jóvenes jugando en 56 equipos en todas las categorías.

Little Soccer Stars in Athens

We all know the Ronaldos, Zidanes and Beckhams of the world of soccer. They play in the best, most competitiveand highest-paying leagues in the world such as those from Spain, England, and Italy. They play every weekend in front of thousands of people and they are seen on television by millions of followers around the world as well.

We can’t see these huge ‘futbol’ stars shining right herein Athens, but what we can see are the future stars of the game playing and developing their skills every weekend in the local soccer leagues.

Children between the ages of six and 10 years old meet every weekend at the Holland Youth Sports Complex and compete in different leagues. These leagues are designed for the soccer development of the participants.

Children under the age of six play in teams of three players with no goalkeeper while two adults supervise the game on both sides of the small field. Children under the age of eight play in slightly bigger fields with four players on each team and no goalkeeper. They also have the supervision of two adults. Children under 10 play in teams composed of five players and a goalkeeper. They are coached from the sidelines and have three referees on the field. The size of the ball and the size of the goals also change according to the age group. Boys and girls under the age of eight play together.

All of the teams have coaches and get together during the week to practice for upcoming games. "We meet once or twice a week to practice and then we play on the weekends," says Erin Thompson, who, along with Roberto Zelaya, coaches a team of children under eight.
