¡Los chinches de cama están de vuelta!

Luego de la llegada del insecticida DDT y los plaguicidas clorados, los ‘Chinches de Cama’ desaparecieron de casas, moteles y hoteles de muchos lugares. Debido a esto, estos insectos sólo "existían" en las historias, rimas y libros de entomología.

Los Chinches de Cama son conocidos por los entomólogos como verdaderos chinches. No tienen alas, son aplanados, más o menos ovalados, son chupadores pero no muerden. Tienen unos seis o siete milímetros de largo, son marrones pero cambian a marrón-rojizo luego de comer y los recién nacidos son bronceados pero transparentes. Son parásitos y sólo se alimentan de sangre.

Para chupar la sangre de su víctima, su aparato bucal se ha transformado en un "tubo hueco" con punta afilada. Mientras se alimenta, inyecta saliva con un anticoagulante y un anestésico de manera que el atacado no sienta la picada y la sangre no coagule. Luego de alimentarse, nuestra piel tendrá marcas rojas, bordeadas de un anillo más claro y sentiremos una picazón. Las sábanas mostrarán pequeñas manchas de sangre.

Los Chinches de Cama salen solo de noche y se esconden todo el día en los pliegues de camas, colchones, paredes empapeladas o en casi cualquier lugar donde duerman los humanos. ¡Mientras usted lee esto, los Chinches de Cama están apareciendo en más casas, moteles y hasta en hoteles de lujo! Pero, no se preocupe, de acuerdo a los especialistas no existen razones médicas para temer la picada de estos bichos, a menos que usted sea inusualmente alérgico.

Pero, ¿por qué están apareciendo otra vez? En el pasado casi desaparecieron porque los métodos de control no eran específicos. Al intentar controlar cucarachas o zancudos, mataban a casi todo animal incluyendo estos chinches. Hoy en día, los métodos de control son muy específicos, de manera que si el controlador de plagas profesional (PCP) trata de controlar cucarachas, sólo controlará a estos insectos y no a otros. Esa es una de las razones para su regreso.

De manera que si tienen la picazón, las marcas, tus sábanas manchadas y oliendo a algo dulzón como el olor de ciertos refrescos dulces, tu tienes a estos visitantes. De manera que llama a un PCP para que elimine a tus Chinches de Cama.

Bed Bugs Are Coming Back!

After the arrival of the DDT insecticide and all chlorinate pesticides, bed bugs disappeared from houses, motels and hotels all over. After that they almost only "existed" through bedtime stories, rhymes and entomology books.

Bedbugs are what entomologists and biologists call true bugs. They are wingless, flat and somehow oval sucking (not biting) creatures smaller that six or seven millimeters. They are brownish, and reddish after meal but the newborn are tan and translucent. They are also parasites of mainly mammals and they only eat blood.

In order to suck the blood, their mouthparts are transformed into a "hollow tube" with a piercing tip. Saliva with an anticoagulant and a mild anesthetic is injected during feeding so the host will not feel a thing and the blood will not clot. After feeding, the skin will have red dots surrounded by a lighter ring and itch. The sheets will show tiny dots of blood.

The bedbugs will come out only at night but they will hide the whole day in bedding, creases in the mattress, the bed frame, box springs, inside wallpaper, and just about any possible place near the bed.

As you are reading this, bedbugs are appearing in some houses, motels and even fancy hotels! But do not worry: according to specialists there is no medical reason to fear a bedbug bite, unless you are unusually allergic to them.

Why are they appearing? In the past they almost disappeared because the pest control methods were not specific. So by controlling roaches or mosquitoes they were killing everything else, including bedbugs. Today, the pest control methods are very specific, so if the pest control professionals (PCPs) are after roaches that is all they will kill. That is why bedbugs are coming back.

And if you have the itch, the marks, your bed sheets have the red dots and smell like a sickly-sweet, soda-pop-syrup, you have visitors. Call the PCP and get rid of the bedbugs!
