Noche Latina en UGA

La Noche Latina, una celebración anual organizada por la Asociación de Estudiantes Hispanos (HSA por sus siglas en inglés) de la Universidad de Georgia, se llevó a cabo el viernes 17 de octubre y fue todo un éxito.

Aproximadamente 400 personas asistieron al evento incluyendo estudiantes, personal de la universidad, padres y niños, el cual se llevó a cabo en el Tate Center del campus de la universidad.

La noche comenzó con una cena donada en parte por la Taquería La Parrilla, patrocinador del HSA. También hubo tortillas, salsa, frijoles y sodas. Para acompañar la cena y durante todo el evento se escucharon diferentes ritmos latinos, muchos de los cuales fueron presentados en vivo por cantantes y músicos. Después de la cena se dió paso a la presentación de grupos y bailes incluyendo ‘break dancing’, flamenco, capoeira y mariachis.

"En los últimos días varias personas se me han acercado para felicitar al HSA por tan maravilloso evento. Fue un esfuerzo de equipo y hasta los miembros más recientes ayudaron", dijo Siomara Acevedo, encargada de buscar nuevos miembros para el HSA.

Pero la fiesta no se acabó ahí. Alrededor de la 11 p.m., la fiesta continuó en el Tasty World, un bar ubicado en el centro de Athens donde se pudo disfrutar de más música, baile y diversión.

Se calcula que unas 500 personas disfrutaron de la fiesta en Tasty World.

"Tuvimos una gran respuesta. El personal del bar tuvo que esperar para limpiar el local hasta mucho después que se dejó de poner música", dijo Acevedo.

Amanda Howell, una estudiante de cuarto año de español en UGA, participó en la fiesta en Tasty World y hasta convenció a sus padres a venir. Aunque la fiesta se llevó a cabo en el centro de Athens, Amanda dijo que se sentía como si estuviera en España. "La pista de baile estaba llena de gente, la música estaba alta y todos se lo estaban pasando muy bien. Me sentí como si estuviera otra vez en una discoteca como cuando fui a Barcelona el verano pasado. Si estoy en Athens el año que viene, no me lo perderé".

El HSA, creado en 1991 por un pequeño grupo de estudiantes, es una organización que promueve la diversidad de la cultura latina y une a estudiates interesados en aprender sobre la sociedad y tradiciones latina. La organización anima a todos los estudiantes a participar sin importar a qué grupo ético pertenezcan. Además de Noche Latina, también se organiza una Baile de Gala en la primavera.

Noche Latina, the annual performance showcase sponsored by the Hispanic Student Association at the University of Georgia, took place Friday, October 17th, and was a huge success. Approximately 400 people attended the event held at the Tate Center on the university campus; among those in attendace were students, faculty members, parents, and kids of all ages.

The night began with a buffet dinner provided in part by Taqueria La Parilla, a sponsor of the HSA. Chips, dips, refried beans, and soft drinks were plentiful. Accompanying the dinner and throughout the entire night was a variety of Latin rhythms, some of which were preformed live by various singers and musicians. Following the dinner, the entertainment began including break dancing, flamenco, capoeira, and mariachis.

"In the past few days people have approached me to congratulate HSA on such a wonderful production. It was really a team effort, even the newest members helped out," said Siomara Acevedo, recruiting officer for HSA.

But the party was not over there. Beginning around 11 p.m., the after party kicked off. Hosted at Tasty World, a bar and music venue located in downtown Athens, the entertainment continued with even more music, a lot more dancing, and a great time had by all.

It was estimated that around 500 people came to enjoy the late night extravaganza.

" We had a tremendous turn out. The bartenders were not able to clear the place until long after the music had stopped," Acevedo said.

Amanda Howell, a senior from Athens and a Spanish major at UGA, attended the after party at Tasty World and even managed to convince her dad and stepmom to come. Although the party took place in downtown Athens, Amanda said she felt like she was back in Spain. "The dance floor was packed with people, the music was loud, and everyone was having a great time. I felt like I was back at the ‘discoteca’ that I went to while in Barcelona last summer. If I am in Athens next year, I definitely won’t miss it."

HSA, created in 1991 by a small group of students, is an organization that promotes the diversity of the Latin culture and brings together students who are interested in learning about Latin society and traditions. The organization encourages students of all ethnicities to become involved. In addition to Noche Latina, they also put together a Spring Gala usually late in the spring semester.
