La Vida y Obra de Barbarito Torres

Barbaro Alberto Torres Delgado nació en Matanzas, Cuba, hace algo más de cuarenta años. A los diez ya "rayaba" el tres proficientemente y comenzó a acompañar a su padre en las tradicionales "canturías", pero no es hasta 1970 cuando inicia su carrera profesional con Serenata Yumurina, un grupo dirigido por Higinio Mullens. En 1973 entra al ejercito y se integra a la banda militar y la orquesta de estilo jazz-band. Al licenciarse, viaja por toda Cuba con Siembra Cultural, un conjunto típico que más tarde pasaría a llamarse Grupo Yarabí, hasta cuando decide radicarse en la Habana.

Torres ya era conocido entre los mejores laudistas cubanos y como tal se convierte en miembro permanente de la Orquesta Cubana de Cuerdas. Sus servicios son solicitados por la radio, televisión, cineastas y estudios fonográficos que le incluyen en las grabaciones de grupos tan populares como Elio Revé, Sierra Maestra y Albita Rodríguez, quien ahora vive en los Estados Unidos.

Eventualmente, Torres se une como director musical con la legendaria "reina " de la música guajira, Celina González y su conjunto Campoalegre. Al mismo tiempo trabaja con Grupi Manguaré y viaja extensamente con ambos a Latinoamérica y Europa. A partir de 1992, Torres y su recién fundado grupo Piquete Cubano acompañan a la gran Celina hasta 1995 cuando se separan definitivamente. Barbarito Torres fue también parte importante de las grabaciones de Afro Cuban All Stars y Buena Vista Social Club, ganadores del Grammy® en 1998.

Barbarito Torres estará en el Georgia Theater en el centro de Athens el sábado, 25 de Octubre, para complacernos con su repertorio musical.

A little more than forty years ago, Barbaro Alberto Torres Delgado was born in Matanzas, Cuba. At ten he was capable of "picking" the lute with extreme proficiency, and soon began accompanying his father. In 1970, he began his professional career with Serenata Yumurina, a group led by Higinio Mullens. Torres entered the military service in 1973, where he joined the marching band as well as the army's jazz orchestra. After his discharge in late 1976, he traveled all over Cuba performing with Siembra Cultural, later renamed Grupo Yarabi, until he wisely decided to settle in Havana.

By then, Torres was well known among the best lute players and his services were in demand by radio, TV, filmmakers and recording studios. He became a permanent member of the Orquesta Cubana de Cuerdas and was featured on the recordings of the most recognizable names in popular Cuban music, such as Elio Reve, Grupo Sierra Maestra and "Albita," who now resides in the States.

Finally, he joined Celina Gonzalez, the legendary queen of guajira music, and her Grupo Campoalegre as their musical director while also featuring with Grupo Manguare. He re-corded and toured extensively with both groups, visiting Europe and Latin America. In 1992, Torres started his own group, Piquete Cubano, but continued to accompany the great Celina until 1995 when they finally went their separate ways. Recently, Torres featured prominently in the recordings of the Afro Cuban All Stars and on the 1998 Grammy® winning Buena Vista Social Club album.

Torres, a true Cuban musical icon, will perform in Athens at the Georgia Theater on Saturday, Oct. 25th, bringing his best hits to entertain us with his own inimitable Latin musical style.
