¡Leyendo en español!

La Biblioteca Pública del Condado de Athens-Clarke ha creado dos iniciativas para ofrecer a los residentes hispanos de Athens oportunidades de lectura y entretenimiento en español.

Todos los miércoles a las 7:30 de la noche, se cuentan cuentos en español en el Children's Story Room. Jóvenes de todas las edades y sus padres pasan una hora escuchando cuentos y canciones y participan en una actividad al final de la hora. Uno de los temas tratados con anterioridad fueron los insectos, de esta manera los jóvenes pudieron aprender sobre diferentes insectos y las cosas que hacen. Valerie Peters, encargada de leer, poner la música y realizar la actividad, comenzó la tarde poniendo una canción sobre las hormigas. Durante el resto de la hora, los presentes disfrutaron de dos cuentos, uno sobre una oruga y otro sobre un grillo y sus amigos músicos. También hubo una canción sobre arañas y un video sobre mosquitos. Los jóvenes tuvieron la oportunidad de tocar diferentes instrumentos musicales y hacer una mariquita al final de la sesión.

Otra iniciativa es el Rincón en español donde se pueden leer libros y revistas en español. "La biblioteca es responsable de servir a toda la comunidad. Somos un recurso importante disponible a todos y lo que hay dentro de estas paredes refleja todas las personas en la comunidad a las que servimos", dijo Gail Firestone, directora asistente de servicios de la biblioteca para jóvenes. Hay planes para tener periódicos de diferentes países de habla española disponibles en la biblioteca y de esta manera las personas pueden mantenerse informadas de lo que sucede en sus países de origen.

Los residentes hispanos ya empiezan a notar los beneficios del Rincón en español. "Me gusta el Rincón en español porque al tener todos los materiales nuevos en español en un mismo lugar no tengo que preguntar dónde puedo encontrar los libros o videos que estoy buscando. Sé exactamente donde tengo que ir y donde están", explicó Yesenia Mendoza quien utiliza la biblioteca.

Los cuentos en español y el Rincón en español están abiertos al público y son gratis. Los cuentos se llevan a cabo todos los miércoles a partir de las 7:30 p.m. durante el mes de octubre. Reading in Spanish!

The Athens-Clarke County Public Library has created two initiatives to offer Athens Hispanic residents reading and entertainment opportunities in Spanish.

Every Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m., there is storytelling in Spanish in the Children's Story Room. Children of all ages and their parents spend an hour listening to stories and songs and participate in a project at the end of each session. One of the past storytelling topics was insects, so youngsters could learn about different insects and what they could do. Valerie Peters, in charge of conducting the storytelling activity, started by playing a song about ants. During the rest of the hour, the audience enjoyed two stories, one about a caterpillar and another about a cricket and its musical friends. There was also a song about spiders and a video on mosquitoes. Kids had a chance to play different musical instruments and handcraft a ladybug at the end of the session.

Another initiative is the Spanish Corner, where books and magazines in Spanish are available to the public. "The library is responsible to serve the whole community. We are an important resource that is available to everyone and what is inside these walls reflects all the shades of the community we serve," said Gail Firestone, assistant director youth services for the library. There are plans to have newspapers from different Spanish-speaking countries available as well, so people can keep up with what's happening back in their home countries.

Spanish-speaking residents are already noticing the benefits of having a Spanish Corner. "I like the Spanish Corner because with all the new Spanish language materials in one place, I don't need to ask where to find the books and videos I am looking for. I know exactly where to come and where they will be," said Yesenia Mendoza who has taken advantage of the library's resources.

The Spanish storytelling and the Spanish Corner are open to the public and are free of charge. The storytelling takes place every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. during the month of October.
