¡Athens fue invadida por insectos!

¡Mientras los pobladores de Athens dormían, montones de bichos comenzaban a llegar al Jardín Botánico Estadal de Georgia! A medida que avanzaba la mañana fue la gente la que acudió masivamente al jardín botánico. Esto sucedió el sábado 20 de septiembre, séptimo año en el cual estos "bichos" invadían este bello jardín.

El Jardín Botánico de Georgia es conocido como un remanso de paz pero también es un salón abierto con la misión de enseñar. Con esta idea en mente, el equipo educativo del Jardín Botánico, encabezado por Anne Schenk y acompañados por los Jóvenes del Club H.O. Lund y los entomólogos del Departamento de Entomología y el Museo de Historia Natural de la Universidad de Georgia, así como diversos amigos y voluntarios se reúnen al final de cada verano para enseñar a la comunidad sobre la belleza, la utilidad y los valores nutricionales de los insectos.

El Jardín Botánico promueve diversas actividades educativas en las cuales tratan de integrar el mundo de las plantas con los diversos organismos con los cuales interactúan. Es así como los insectos entran en esta ecuación educativa. Los insectos son ideales para explicar las interacciones ecológicas que hacen que nuestro mundo exista como lo conocemos. Algunas de los talleres que se realizan durante el año son "Arte de Cerámica en el Jardín", "Bichos Transformadores", "Todo sobre Monarcas" y estos, combinados con las carreras de cocos y cucarachas, títeres de insectos, el paseo de las mariposas, cocinando con insectos y algunas más formaron parte del Insectival.

De manera que esta invasión educativa no fue una sorpresa y estaremos esperando el próximo verano para volver a ver todos esos insectos otra vez en el Jardín Botánico y aprender mucho de ellos.

Athens Invaded by Insects!

While Athens residents were sleeping, hundreds of bugs were arriving at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia! As the morning passed, it was the people who invaded the Botanical Garden! That happened this past September 20th, it was the seventh year in a row in which the bugs have invaded this beautiful garden.

The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is known as a peaceful place, but also as an open classroom whose mission is to teach. With this mission, Anne Shenk and the Education Department, as well as the Young Entomologists of the H.O. Lund Club, the Department of Entomology and the Museum of Natural History of the University of Georgia, friends and volunteers, get together at the end of every summer to teach about the beauty, usefulness and even nutritional value of the insects.

The Botanical Garden promotes many educational activities that integrate the plant world with the many organisms with which they interact. That is how insects got to be part of that equation. The insects are ideal subjects to explain the intricate ecological interactions that make our world possible. Some of the educational events made during the year are "Ceramic Garden Art," "Bug Transformers," "All about Monarchs." And these, together with beetle and roach races, insect puppets, butterfly ramble, cooking with insects and many other activities were part of this year's insectival.

So, in the end, the invasion of the bugs wasn't unexpected and we will be waiting for the end of the next summer to go to the Botanical Garden to see all those Insects and learn about them.
