Iglesia local predica en español

Carlos y Yolanda Baca llegaron a Athens hace cinco años provenientes de Perú con una misión: predicar la biblia y también ayudar a los hispanos que lo necesitan. Trabajan bajo la supervisión de la Iglesia Bautista de Prince Avenue. "La Iglesia Bautista ha trabajado con los hispanos en Athens por los últimos 17 años, mucho antes de que lo hispanos se convirtieran en un importante segmento de la población de Athens", dice Carlos quien trabajó como pastor en Perú por 12 años antes de mudarse a Athens. "No sólo predicamos la palabra de Dios a los hispanos, también los ayudamos con sus necesidades diarias". Carlos y Yolanda han estado casados durante 13 años y tiene una hija de 12 años llamada Carolina. "Creemos que una familia unida es una familia feliz y esa es una de las cosas que enseñamos", dice Yolanda.

Antes de que Carlos y Yolanda llegaran a Athens, fue el pastor colombiano Manuel Rojas quien trabajó muy de cerca con los hispanos en la Iglesia Bautista de Prince Avenue. "Durante 12 años, el pastor Rojas sirvió como voluntario en traducciones, transporte, trámite de documentos y todo aquello que pudiera ayudar a los hispanos", dice Carlos. "En aquel entonces, no habían muchos hispanos viviendo en Athens".

La pareja peruana ofrece misas, clases de inglés y otros servicios en la Misión en Jefferson Road con la ayuda de trabajadores sociales de varias iglesias bautistas de Athens y sus alrededores y de la Universidad de Georgia.

Carlos y Yolanda también trabajan con la comunidad en el vecindario Pinewood Estates en el centro New Life. El centro ofrece misas, reuniones de apoyo para hombres y mujeres, cuidado infantil, clases de inglés y estudio de la biblia. "Las iglesias en los Estados Unidos están interesadas en llegar a la comunidad hispana", dice Yolanda. "Los estudiantes de la Unión de Estudiantes Bautistas de la Universidad de Georgia ayudan a los jóvenes hispanos con sus tareas y pasan tiempo con ellos en el centro".

La Iglesia Bautista de Prince Avenue y otras organizaciones sin fines de lucro cubren con los gastos de la casa en Jefferson Road y el centro en el vecindario Pinewood Estates, además de las facturas de servios.

"Los hispanos deben aprovechar y utilizar todos los servicios y la ayuda que tienen disponible", dice Yolanda. "Deberían asistir a las clases de inglés, es importante que se involucren con la comunidad de habla inglesa".

Local church preaches in Spanish

Carlos and Yolanda Baca came to Athens from Peru five years ago with a mission: to preach the bible and help Hispanics in need along the way. They work under the supervision of the Prince Avenue Baptist Church. "The Baptist Church has been working with Hispanics in Athens for the last 17 years, long before Hispanics became a large and important portion of the Athens population," says Carlos, who worked as a pastor in Peru for 12 years before moving to Athens. "We not only preach the word of God to Hispanics, but we also help them with their everyday needs." Carlos and Yolanda have been married for 13 years and have a 12 year-old daughter named Carolina. "We believe that an united family is a happy family and that's one of the things we teach," says Yolanda.

Before Carlos and Yolanda arrived in Athens, it was Colombian Pastor Manuel Rojas who worked closely with Hispanics at the Prince Avenue Baptist Church. "For 12 years, Pastor Rojas served as a volunteer with translating, transportation, paper work, and everything he could physically do to help Hispanics," says Carlos. "Back then there were not many Hispanics living in Athens."

The Peruvian couple offers masses, English classes and other services at the Jefferson Road Mission with the help of volunteer workers from several Baptist churches in the area and the University of Georgia.

Carlos and Yolanda also work in the community at the Pinewood Estates neighborhood's New Life center. The center offers masses, support meetings for women and men, childcare, English classes and bible study. "Churches in the United States are interested in reaching the Hispanic community," says Yolanda. "The students at the Baptist Student Union at the University of Georgia help teens with their homework and also socialize with them."

The Prince Avenue Baptist Church and other non-profit organizations pay for the house on Jefferson Road and the center in the Pinewood Estates neighborhood, in addition to the utility bills.

"Hispanics must take advantage of all the services available to them," says Yolanda. "They should attend the English classes; it is important for them to become involved with the English-speaking community."
